You're welcome! I'll try to pay better attention in the future. -
Ten years ago I used to pass the OJCs up when buying records with the idea that I would find earlier pressings, possibly first pressings in the racks. I've never been one to collect multiple copies of an album, so instead of buying the first copy I saw, i.e. an OJC sometimes, I would hold off until an earlier pressing crossed my path. With the rising cost of those originals and their scarcity, I am looking at OJCs from a different perspective. For the most part, I'm finding used copies in near mint condition for $6.00 to $10.00. The sound of these lps is quite acceptable and if I really want the title on vinyl instead of cd, I'm no longer hesitating on purchasing these editions. It got me to wondering if we'll start to see the prices go up on the OJCs as the originals become more expensive and harder to find. Now that they aren't being pressed, there's a finite number available and a lot of the titles I've been buying don't have much of a chance of being released by the current crop of reissue companies. Thoughts?

Holy Crap! I just read the thread about the possible closing back on January 1, 2008! I didn't realise we were that close to closing down. I'm really sorry I don't pay attention to the "business" side of the board. I've corrected my discrepancies by donating to the cause. This place is truly a wonderful place to visit and I'd hate to see it go. My apologies for being late to the party. -
Yep, I want it. A bit envious. It's a pretty good sounding copy, Porcy and in great condition. My understanding is that the majority of copies of this one are very noisy - a real shame. New Jazz's quality control was never one of their strongest points. I'm very happy with my copy too. It's not noisy either.

Maybeck Recital Hall Solo Piano Series on Concord

Only 42? I forgot about the Kenny Barron disc. I've got that one too and I do like it a lot. I hadn't noticed until you mentioned it, but damn, how did they leave Tommy Flannagan out of the series? -
Thanks everyone. I saw the Conn. selection at R5 yesterday.

Does anyone have Introducing the Contemporary Jazz Quintet? True Blue newsletter calls it a hidden gem or something to that effect. Opinions?

I bought some of these when they were released, but they came so swiftly that I stopped buying them to keep my collection in better balance. I just went out to the Concord site and didn't see any in stock. I guess they are out of print? It was a great series imo and I wish I had bought more of them. The only down side was a few often repeated tunes in the sets which eventually created a rule of leaving them out by request by Concord. A few of my favorites are Hank Jones, Jaki Byard, Walter Norris, John Hicks and Jessica Williams. I was able to attend the Jaki Byard recording and a friend of mine tried to invite Jaki to dinner with us after the session but he already had an invitation (probably including Carl Jefferson and other industry people). Hank Jones was the first one I got wind of but the session was sold out before I could sign up. It's a beautiful space. It felt like being in church, jazz church. I really wish I could have been there for Hank's performance, but at least I have the recording. Does anyone else have any favorites or memories if they saw any of the performances? It was a gas watching Jaki Byard play. My recollection is that he played Round Midnight with one hand ('cause he can). He was unhappy with a couple of tunes so we got to hear him play a few of them twice. Are there any sick individuals who own the whole series?

Ah, Walter Norris! I haven't played any of his music in a long time. The first thing I ever heard by him was his Live at the Maybeck Recital Hall and I really liked it. I ended up buying several of his albums. He's got an interesting, analytical style to me, though I can't listen to it for long periods.

Which Mosaic Are You Enjoying Right Now?
six string replied to Soulstation1's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I just finished listening to the first disc of the Don Pullen Mosaic Select. I had never heard any of his music afaik, but a friend of mine that I really respect highly recomended him, so I bought it today. Very exciting music to say the lease. More to come after I get better acquainted with it. -
The Poll Winners - Barney Kessel, Ray Brown and Shelley Manne (Contemporary) OJC It's not an original but it still sounds great.

Count me as a big fan of the man too. I really like his Contemporary albums. I have yet to find one on that label that isn't worth owning. I have two of the Vanguard albums on vinyl but I'd trade them in if I could find the cd box set. Someone I know down in L.A. recently found a used copy of the boxset for $20.00! Yikes! I have the album called The Trip and love the title tune. I haven't heard the Vanguard version, though I'm sure it smokes, no pun intended. I think Meets the Rhythm Section was my introduction to Art's music too. I hear the Roost material is good but I haven't heard it.

I'll admit to being a fan back in the day. I was already familiar with Greg Lake through King Crimson's debut and only vaguely familiar with Emerson's involvement with Atomic Rooster. I really liked the first ELP album, particularly Take A Pebble, Barbarian and of course Lucky Man. Tarkus was pretty cool for its suite on side one. I was less enamored with Trilogy, though I learned From the Beginning on guitar. Brain Salad Surgery was a return to form and I saw the tour in San Diego, positioning myself right down front between Keith and Greg. I still have a few photos from the show. However, I can't get into them anymore. I don't own any their music and have no reason to revisit them. It was a prog phase I was in at the time and which I got bored with. I think that live album was the last thing I ever bought from them. The concert was pretty cool for a stoner as it was one of the early quad shows.

What label is this 4 cd set on?

My introduction to Towner was The Moors as has been previously noted in this thread. I was very new to jazz at the time and his 12 string playing on that tune really got my attention. No Suite:Judy Blue Eyes here! I bought the second Solstice album when I came upon it, but it was lost in a flood fifteen years ago. However, I've since acquired a few others like Trio/solo, Matchbook, and a few others that escape me at the moment. I love his understated piano sound and his guitar playing is of course quite excellent. I see a few albums on this thread that sound like they are worth picking up. I have a few of the early Oregon albums that I really like. Distant Hills in particular is a favorite.
