What cool things does your pet do?
tjluke68 replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I had a cat that used to fetch pennies in his mouth and return and drop at my feet for me to throw again. Also, had another cat that would ask for milk when we would open the refrigerator. One time when the cat was younger, he made a weird meow when we pulled the milk out of the fridge - sounded something like 'reh reh.' So going forward, whenever we would open the fridge and the cat was nearby, we'd ask if he wanted 'reh reh' and he'd go nuts repeating 'reh reh' until we gave him some. I think he truly recognized the (made-up) word and realized that 'reh reh' was milk, because if I opened the fridge and asked if he wanted a beer or some orange juice or some leftovers, I would get a blank stare... -
I just recently browsed thru a music catalog and saw that EMI UK has recently released Do-Re-Mi and The Cool School as a two-fer. I've been meaning to get This Time of Year even though I have the LP (but haven't listened to it in the 2 years that I've had it) :-0

I just picked up a SEALED LP copy of Ronnie Cuber's 11th Day of Aquarius. What a great record with Tom Harrell on trumpet/fluegelhorn. Had to burn it to CD almost immediately...

Saw it again about 2 months ago. It may have been IFC, Sundance or one of the Showtime spin-offs. IMDB.com is pretty decent on television listings sometimes.

Is Freddie Hubbard's Columbia Material Available Anywhere?
tjluke68 replied to DMP's topic in Discography
Gleam is a live 2LP that was released in Japan only. I forget what songs are on it as I don't have the LP/CD in front of me, but it's comprised of songs from LPs around that era, plus some older tunes, IIRC. Anyone else interested in a trade. Anyone have a good copy of SuperBlue that they burned to CD? -
Is Freddie Hubbard's Columbia Material Available Anywhere?

I copied High Energy and Gleam (the Japanese only 2 LP release) to CD if anyone's interested in a trade. I cleaned them up a bit using Dart Pro and made proper covers. I'm interested in similar LP-to-CD material (any jazz/big band from 20s-80s) Thanks, TL -
I just found this yesterday - sorry if it's already known information. You can buy Custom CDs from old Folkways or Cook Records LPs from Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. There's some neat stuff there - Ellington, Lizzie Miles, Mugsy Spanier, Frank Signorelli, Bunny Berigan, etc - and that's just the Jazz stuff. The only bad part is they don't provide album cover art for any of the custom CDs. Since the picture is up on the site of the LP cover, maybe they could provide the JPEG or GIF... I'm thinking about ordering 2-3 CDs today...

PANDORA - Can you help me discover more music that I'll like?
tjluke68 replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I just scoped it out today after reading about it in the latest issue of Fast Company. I signed up for the Free service and typed in Red Nichols (got some Ellington, Bix, Glenn Miller, PeeWee Russell, Coleman Hawkins, etc from around the same era). Next I put in Jellyfish, Japan (the band with David Sylvian), Illinois Jacquet (got Lester Young, etc), The Cardigans and Adam & the Ants (sorry I'm an 80s teenager). The only thing it couldn't find was the band Savatage (late 80s/early 90s metal band) - I was itchin' to hear a great song from them called '24 Hours Ago.' I'm quite impressed so far. -
Grabbed a nice sealed CD (for $4) of Ronnie Scott Columbia LP from 1969, "Ronnie Scott & the Band."

Anyone want to sell me DISC 2 of the LARRY YOUNG
tjluke68 replied to tjluke68's topic in Offering and Looking For...
I left a message at Mosaic. I've checked gemm.com, djangos, half.com, and ebay. Can anyone recommend some other used CD sites? Thanks! -
Just picked up this CD for $8.99 at the Virgin Megastore down the street (great price) but the cover looks awful! I swear it looks like they didn't have the original artwork and used the cheapest scanner to create one. The "subtitle" Recorded Live At The Newport & Pacific Jazz Festivals - 1966 looks extremely blurry to me. Is my sight going or does anyone else see the problem?

I caught this short movie (under an hour) over the weekend and being a record collector myself (LPs mostly) was quite intrigued by Joe Bussard. He collects old 78s of Hot Jazz, Swing, Hillbilly/Country, Folk, Blues, Gospel. Claims the "cancer of rock" destroyed music and that Jazz stopped around the 30s and it's some other type of music after that. Anyone else see this movie on cable, DVD, etc? He definitely turned me onto some music that I'll be searching for (Billy Banks' version of Bugle Call Rag just smoked...)!!!

When and why did Tuesday become the official release date for new LPs/CDs? Any information would be helpful - just curious...

Odd that with so many Capitol two-fers out there, especially the UK versions with Kay Starr, Louis Prima, Peggy Lee, Les Brown, etc - that there aren't any of Nichols' Capitol sides as two-fers. So after my current project, I've decided to take two of the Nichols' Capitols that I have a burn my own two-fer...!!!

I just picked up this Columbia/France CD over the weekend. I already have the newer Duke Ellington 2CD set from a few years back, but bought it for the Buck Clayton sides. Does anyone know if the live Clayton sides are also fake (overdubbed audience)? Also, wonder if there were more songs recorded than the 3 on this CD... Thanks, TL

OK, it may not be Jelly Roll but it is his music. I just picked up Dick Hyman's CD, "Jelly & James" and it's phenomenal. The music was recorded in '73 & '75 and is from 2 complete LPs featuring Jelly Roll Morton and James P Johnson music. Some of the other musicians are Urbie Green, Vic Dickenson, Ruby Braff and others! Awesome stuff! The CD is from '92 and is probably long OOP.

I just picked up the PAUSA/MPS LP recently and now I'm even more anxious to listen to it tomorrow or over the wkend.

Are we using organissimo.org to donate or the donate button on the story link?

I must say some pretty fine covers for CIRRUS/WAITING. Anyone want a do a trade for a copy of the CD-R once I'm finished with the copy process? Thanks, TL
-
I'm in the process of copying Bobby Hutcherson's CIRRUS and THE WAITING to CD (still taking out the few pops/clicks). I'm not a Photoshop pro like most of the posters here; anyone want to make up a potential cover for each or as a two-fer. I can trade a copy if you'd like when I'm finished... Thanks!

I just picked up 2 LRC CDs from Amazon of this session and the Live Session. I wish someone would do the transfer properly, the sound is too bassy at times and pins the needle to the point of distortion. Sounds like they copied the vinyl onto CD and forgot to check the line in levels... But better than not having it on CD at all. I don't know why someone licenses the Groove Merchant/Solid State stuff to a more adept company. I know some of it's been out by Capitol Jazz or Blue Note in the past...

I'll be in the Troy, Michigan area next week and wanted to know if there are any good stores for vinyl and/or used CDs? Thanks!
