Picked up BOB WILBER at Bechet's, ROD LEVITT/Solid Ground, NEW MCKINNEY'S COTTON PICKERS (Sealed) and JIMMY MCPARTLAND/Music Man Goes Dixieland - each one only $1.99 and in great shape. REALLY, REALLY enjoying the ROD LEVITT as I type...

I'm surprised that they get the advertising that they do considering how often the site times out on me. Do these companies even check out their site when they sign up for advertising? Maybe AMG brings a laptop to the meeting which has a smaller local version that they use to 'wow' the companies with and, obviously, runs much faster. Sometimes it would be quicker to revert to the old AMG book that I have...

RCA Jazz Classics German re-issues series list?
tjluke68 replied to bakeostrin's topic in Discography
I have the Jack Montrose RCA Spain Blues & Vanilla if anyone's interested in purchasing or trade. I found it within the past 2 weeks sealed - opened it and played it only once! Wasn't really diggin' it.. TL -
The OH CAPTAIN Soundtrack is great! I copied it over to CD quite some time ago and listen to it over & over. I especially like the Osie Johnson vocal track, MADAME (or something similar). I believe a few of the tracks made it to a Tony Scott CD out by Lonehill. But nothing beats the complete LP. Wonder if there are any alternate takes, etc floating around in the MGM/Universal vaults...

I have a Mercury LP by JP Sasson - it may be from material that was recorded overseas, can't seem to recall right now. I even copied it to CD because it was an enjoyable listen. I'm sure you can find the LP on ebay if you type in Sasson and Dixie. TL

Going to Prague: Any jazz-related recommendations?
tjluke68 replied to tjluke68's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Got back on Friday and had a wonderful time, despite the weather. Couldn't drag the wife to a Jazz show (jeez, whatever happened to compromise?). But I did happen to make it to the Agartha CD store around Wencelas Square and Bontonland (CDs & DVDs). My score for the trip was: JAMES P JOHNSON Sony/Columbia CD - Father of the Stride Piano LAWSON-HAGGART BAND - Membran CD of 2 Decca LPs LOUIS ARMSTRONG Sony CD - In Prague 1965 and a nice cheap (about $5) CD of EMIL LUDVIK - Czech Jazz/Big Band leader!!! Really enjoying this CD of material from 1940s. Trying to find another on the same label by KAMIL BEHOUNEK. Tried emailing someone on the radioservis site as to shipping to the US, but no reply yet. Anyone familiar with EMIL LUDVIK or KAMIL BEHOUNEK? Thanks, TL -

Thanks to everyone for all of the Paris suggestions when I travelled back in April. Wife and I are headed to Prague in late September. Any record store or jazz club suggestions? Any other tourist suggestions off the beaten path/not in the regular tourist guides? Thanks, TL

I think I have a Deodato/Airto - In Concert LP with a green label - it's Quadrophonic. Maybe not - gotta go home and look at it...

Blue Notes--complete Rainbow and Paper Bag Sets

I wouldn't doubt that the Booker Ervin is mine that I sold to them about 2 yrs ago... -
I just bought the Audio Technica AT-PL120 from Amazon for about $160. Supposedly, it's the same manufacturer as the Technics 1200. I didn't want to spend more than $200 and I quite happy with the purchase. I also picked up another headshell and a Shure M78S cartridge to play 78s (having a few problems with distortion on the 78 cartridge probably because I hooked it up wrong). But I'm quite impressed with this turntable. I was playing LPs on an 1980s Sony turntable (which still sounds good), but this is honestly a little bit better...

The first song was really good, but the second one blew me away! I'm glad I DVRd it and I cannot stop watching/listening to the youtube clip of Wanderlust. There's an all-female Icelandic brass section backing her up and, I love the feel/vibe of this song! I think it has a jazzy vibe to it (wonder if Deodato is still doing arranging/conducting for her). It really gets me moving! Anyone else a BJORK fan? Anyone catching her live? Concert dates begin next week - but jeez $100+ for tix on stubhub, etc for Radio City, United Palace, etc in NYC area.

I have a copy of that Coltrane and it's a cutout (or maybe it was a promo copy back then) with the little hole in one of the corners. Not sure if I have Mono or Stereo. I bought it at a store or garage sale; it was opened, yet was still in the shrinkwrap when I got it - the gatefold hadn't even been cracked open.. I kept it that way for a while but recently took off the wrap after reading how it could warp the cover, etc. Probably my favourite Coltrane disc, just for the first track alone, Out of This World (I believe).

I searched but didn't find anything on the forum. Sorry if it's a repost... I've only purchased 1 or 2 CDs from Caiman, didn't have any problems but decided not to push my luck after hearing others horror stories. Wonder what this will do for Caiman's or Tower's business. Caiman buys Tower

KABUSA.COM has a turntable that plays 16" discs, yet I'm sure you don't want to spend $500 to play one disc. Check out the record player link at the top...

What live music are you going to see tonight?
tjluke68 replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
Saw the Jeremy Pelt Quartet doing some funky CTI-ish stuff last night at Smoke in NYC. It was a free show and they were taping an upcoming live CD, due out in Sept 2007. Pretty good stuff, but the sound in that small closet isn't the best... -

Saturday March 17 they had a Bix Beiderbecke birthday bash in Bridgewater NJ (say that 5X real fast). It was the first one I've been to and it was really good. The band playing that night was The Dreamland Orchestra, fronted by trombonist Michael Arenella. I must say I felt like I was transported back to the late 20s/early 30s. The band was spot-on and didn't play anything after 1929, dressed like they were in the era, the arrangements harkened back to the Hot Jazz times, the instrumentation was great - overall everything about the concert was wonderful. If you see the band coming to your neck of the woods, I would recommend seeing them if you like early Hot Jazz - dreamlandorchestra.com. -
My local COSTCO had a stand alone they were selling that had about 100 old games on it. I would spend about 15-20 mins playing games everytime I went shopping (and the wife wasn't with me). Always playing: BERZERK - INTRUDER ALERT, INTRUDER ALERT and ROBOTRON 2084 - think I got up to level 7 or 8 - even better than when I was a kid. Remember: ZAXON DIG DUG JOUST TRACK N FIELD TRON

Here is a scan of the front/back covers of the Ronnie Cuber, Aquarius LP. It's not the best, but hopefully it'll work for you. Thanks, TL I think it's too big to attach, so here's a link to the PowerPoint file of the cover. ronniecuber.ppt

WOW! I really like your Ronnie Cuber cover. I found the Aquarius LP sealed about 8 months ago and burned it immediately to CD. I scanned the front/back covers but it's not the best pic. Mind if I use your version? Jazzshrink, do have a burn of this great LP or do you need one?

Thanks for all the replies so far - keep 'em coming. We'll be staying at Les Jardins du Marais in the Marais section. I have a DK tourist guide, so we'll be sure to check out their recommended sites as well as some from this post and the previous ones that brownie pasted. Thanks again... TL

I'm venturing to Paris during the 2nd week of April with my wife. Her friend and husband are going for her 30th birthday and they invited us along. We'll be visiting the standard tourist places like the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Louvre, Versaille, Moulin Rouge/Le Crazy Horse, etc. Can anyone recommend other interesting places or day trips, such as jazz clubs, areas of interest, good record stores (the wife will be with me and she hates record shopping since meeting me, but I told her I like to check out some stores whenever we travel, so that'll hold her for 15-20 mins while I shop), etc that you wouldn't find in your off-the-shelf tour guides? Merci, TL

I was on a streak for a while winning a number of things: $2500 from a contest thru a music marketing company open to similar colleagues where you had to guess the chart rankings each week, which also included new releases. This was around Summer '97 or '98. Won an all-expense paid trip to Salt Lake City thru artistdirect.com and SNOCORE (travelling festival of punk/hardcore bands, extreme winter sports stars, etc). Trip was great and included 2 day lift ticket, boot and snowboard rental, etc. Saw System of a Down, Incubus, and Puya but missed Mr Bungle (with Mike Patton ex-Faith No More). All in all a great win! Won a Numark DJ system and 2 tickets to Area One (Moby's travelling festival that only lasted 2-3 years). I had a great time in the DJ tents listening to some good techno/trance and saw Moby, OutKast, David Bowie (can't remember if he was on year 1 or 2) and some other good bands. Unfortunately, I don't think I've won anything Jazz related, except eBay auctions for LPs, CDs, etc...
