33rd Annual Jazz Record Bash-South Plainfield, NJ
tjluke68 replied to Dmitry's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I picked up Wilbur DeParis, Maynard Ferguson, and Kid Ory LPs before I was told to pay $40 because I wasn't a dealer. I have to work today and will be on vacation tomorrow, so maybe I'll check it out next year... -
I was at a store yesterday and the male clerk's name was FACELIS.

I copied On My Way myself to CDR a few years ago; GREAT LP! I believe all of the music on one of the Dance Session LPs was re-released as King of Swing, so that's been out in the US in the past year or two... I'd like to see a Verve/Clef/Mercury boxset - $$$ but well worth every penny...

I looked up two of the songs on allmusic.com and it's the same release as The Fantastic Jimmy Smith CD that came out within the last 2 years. I believe it was released on United too...

All new (high)school and people for me in '82. I was the new-wave/punk freak with the burgundy hair and freaky clothes. By the summer before my Junior year, I experimented with booze and weed, so found myself hanging with a different crowd and listening to different music! Senior year was fun, especially all the after-school parties at my house, due to being a latch-key kid...

I guess alternative is my next preferred genre (whatever that is these days) as I'm really digging the new(ish) Cardigans CD that came out yesterday in the states (and almost 1 year ago everywhere else). Also, digging the sounds of The Rasmus, The Stills and The Killers. I think some of it harkens back to the New Wave of the 80s. And since I still listen to Adam & the Ants and Flock of Seagulls frequently, that sits quite well with me... I also still dig some of the heavier shit I listened to before discovering Jazz (Fear Factory, Sepultura, Slayer, etc). I'll never get sick of that stuff - I can see me at 50+ and down front in the pit - yeah!!!!

If anyone is interested, I have this 3 CD set and will part with it for $15 and ship it for free. I've been meaning to put it up on EBAY, but just haven't gotten around to it... I'm luke68 on ebay. Thanks, TL

There is the Red Bank, NJ Jazz & Blues Festival in June, which is having some bands perform Basie tunes. I believe the festival wares (posters, shirts, etc) all have Basie's likeness on it. I emailed them a few weeks ago and said THEY BETTER BE DOING SOMETHING TO COMMEMORATE HIS 100th. Here's what I got: Tom: There are a number of activities at the Festival this year (as well as a big event at Count Basie Theatre in town later in the summer) to celebrate Count Basie's birthday. A number of the performers will be playing Count Basie tunes as a tribute (indicated on the schedule at http://www.redbankfestival.com/ent_schedule.html). See you at the Festival! So some good news in his hometown - 'BOUT TIME!!!

"Freaks & Geeks" series being released on DVD!
tjluke68 replied to BruceH's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
The networks are to blame because they move it around so much that the faithful have a hard time finding it. I was watching Freaks N Geeks every week when it was on Mondays, I believe, but then it was moved to Saturday night and it died. Another great show that I love is SCRUBS, but since I'm never sure when it's on, I'm missing it. And with the fucking stupid APPRENTICE around and in it's former time-slot, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up getting canned within the next year or two. -
Maybe he's back playing with Basie up there, who died 20 years ago today!

I think the Pat Moran 2 CD set is great as are the Jack Teagarden, Stan Leven, and Howard McGhee CDs.

Are there members that collect jazz posters?
tjluke68 replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I've got a few of the repros that are selling on Ebay (Basie, Ellington) but no antique/actual jazz posters - I'm too young and too broke! I do have some rock/alternative posters from bands I've seen in the past 15-20 years (Thrill Kill Kult, MXPX, Republica, Gigolo Aunts, SnoCore, WARPED tour, etc) -
I have the import 2 CD set of the Roulette material and Ronnie's a Dynamite Lady is a smokin' track. Another good one is out on Sonet - In Walked Sonny with Sonny Stitt/Art Blakey & the Messengers!

How can you find out when record labels, publishing rights and other related items are up for sale/on the auction block. Not that I have the cash to dole out for something like my own record label (not until the Jeannie comes along), but wonder how the 'general' public can find out info such as this...

I'm just getting into old R&B/DooWop. I've recently picked up some great compilations from the WestSide UK label that contains great sides from King, Federal, DeLuxe, RCA, Bluebird, etc. Some of my new favourites are STEVE GIBSON & RED CAPS, WALLACE BROTHERS, THE CATS & THE FIDDLE, and others. I highly recommend the WestSide comps as their much better in packaging than Collectables/Oldies! I believe much of it can found at half.com, ebay or gemm.com. Check out DOOWOPPIN, Jive Is Jumpin': RCA & Bluebird Vocal Groups!

I just picked up an MPS 2 LP Colorado Jazz Party set from 1972 with Sweets Edison, Clark Terry, Kai Winding, Urbie Green, Flip Phillips and others. Great stuff! Anyone know if this has been released on CD? Thanks!

I picked up a CD yesterday called THE CONCERT - 23.6.1958 - Jazz Legacy/Baden Baden/Unreleased Radio Tapes. It's on the Delta label and has Zoot Sims, Kenny Clarke, Hans Koller, Willie Dennis, Peter Trunk, Lasse Werner and others performing 12 tunes from some concert in Germany. I can't seem to find any other info on this concert. Can anyone help? Thanks!
