  1. There's a lot of interest to hear, especially on Friday and Saturday. I wonder when they release the detailed schedules?
  2. There appear to be two Roscoe Mitchell concerts scheduled.
  3. According to the Festival's post on Twitter, the detailed concert schedule is coming out on Tuesday.
  4. At his performance I saw last Friday he said he had CDs in his bag (he didn't specifically refer to a new one), but it was 2 a.m. so I just went back to the hotel instead of inquiring as I normally would.
  5. This is it, I believe: https://www.amazon.com/Norman-Granz-JATP-Carnegie-Hall/dp/B00005Y1SW/ref=sr_1_sc_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1516285021&sr=1-1-spell&keywords=Norman+Grantz+Carnegie+Hall+1949
  6. Ernest Dawkins, Live at the Original Velvet Lounge (Delmark)
  7. She said it was their first performance and a brand new group--Mitchell and Ellman both sound good, but a bit of a mixed reaction on Sara Serpa--her wordless vocals I find to be often beautiful (as is she), but when she sings lyrics, it sometimes doesn't work for me. So overall, a pleasing, quiet, chamber jazz group, but your degree of enthusiasm will depend on how much you like the vocalist. Now the other Nicole Mitchell group I saw, with Jason Moran on piano, Brad Jones on bass, and Shirazette Tinnin on drums, they sounded amazing.

  9. At the set I heard at Birdland, Tyshawn Sorey was on drums.
  10. I haven't heard her latest one but the two prior recordings, Sixteen Sunsets and Wingwalker, are my favorites by her.
  11. Last Thursday, the Lonnie Smith Trio at Jazz Standard (fantastic set). Later that same day, the Vijay Iyer Sextet at Birdland (same group as on the Far From Over record, very good). Last Friday, at Winter Jazzfest Marathon: Charnett Moffett Music from our Soul at the Bitter End (a great set by an inspired band); Stefon Harris and Blackout at New School Tishman; Mark Ribot's Songs of Resistance at New School Tishman (not sure Mark Ribot has a future as a protest song singer, but the band featuring James Brandon Lewis and Brigan Kraus was quite good); Nicole Mitchell Art and Anthem for Gwendolyn Brooks featuring Jason Moran at New School Tishman (jazz with poetry presentation was fine; the band shined, particularly Jason Moran); and Ernest Dawkins' New Horizons Ensemble Featuring Vijay Iyer at Subculture (a packed 1 a.m. set for the Chicago saxophonist, with Hamid Drake on drums and Junius Paul on bass; that was rather enjoyable). Saturday at Winter Jazzfest Marathon: Nicole Mitchell's Pterodactyl at Subculture (trio with Liberty Ellman on guitar and Sara Serpa on voice); James Carter's Electrik Outlet at New School Tishman (exuberant, prodigious set featuring the impressive Ralphe Armstrong on bass guitar); Harriet Tubman Plays Free Jazz at New School Tishman (the jazz/rock/avant garde power trio of Brandon Ross/Melvin Gibbs/J.T. Lewis expands to a double quartet, adding a second bassist and drummer, plus James Brandon Lewis, Darius Jones and Jaimie Branch, and they play not free jazz but "Free Jazz," the Ornette Coleman composition, in an epic sonic assault; fantastic); and finally, the Sun Ra Arkestra plays a live score to Space is the Place at the New School Tishman (led by Marshall Allen, the Arkestra literally watched the movie with the rest of us and added music; when the Arkestra was playing on the soundtrack they doubled the composition live; it was an odd experience, there was Sun Ra on a giant screen dispensing enigmatic wisdom in his battle with the Overseer; I had never seen the cheesy, amusing, blackploitation film; then after the movie was over, the Arkestra played the traditional Space is the Place, which was great to hear live again, like seeing an old friend you never thought you would see again). A somewhat disconcerting experience the second night of the Marathon was hearing the last 20 minutes or so of Jazzmeia Horn's set. The odd part was trying to reconcile what I heard around me (multiple people expressing rave opinions about her, plus her Grammy nomination), with what I heard--someone who seemed not ready to be presented in this fashion, with vocal mannerisms at times quite grating and annoying to hear. Maybe if she studies for another ten years or so and has the right teachers she might develop, but that level of praise for such a young musician with flaws was ridiculous.

  14. I heard him live once, at Sweet Basil. He had Jerome Richardson on tenor sax.
  15. After listening to Bangs about ten times, I must say it was worth the higher price.
  16. Oscar Peterson, The Sound of the Trio (Verve) Buddy Guy, Living Proof (Jive) Booker Ervin, Booker 'N Brass (Pacific Jazz)
  17. I pre-ordered from Amazon since Amazon's pre-order price is the same as the sum of the Uptown website price plus the $5 in shipping charge imposed by Uptown. No shipping charge with Prime Membership and the final price usually decreases at Amazon.
  18. Domestic shipping for one CD was $3.99.
  19. These are now available as (expensive) CDs. I ordered Bangs and am finding it to be rather wonderful on first listen.
  20. You talked me into it.

    Jimi Hendrix

New release in March: Both Sides Of The Sky presents 13 studio recordings including 10 which have never before been released. All but two of these studio recordings were made during a fertile period between January 1968 and 1970. Jimi's mastery and use of the studio as a proving ground for new songs resulted in a growing collection of extraordinary material. This album completes a trilogy of albums [with Valleys Of Neptune and People, Hell & Angels] presenting the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in the Hendrix archive. The songs include fascinating alternate versions of "Stepping Stone," "Lover Man" and "Hear My Train A Comin'" as well as recordings where Jimi is joined by special guests Johnny Winter and Stephen Stills. Both Sides Of The Sky was mixed by Eddie Kramer, the engineer for all of Hendrix's albums throughout the guitarist's lifetime, and produced by Janie Hendrix, Kramer and John McDermott. Mannish Boy - The first ever studio session by the group Hendrix would christen as his Band Of Gypsys. Hendrix, Cox & Miles shared a love for the blues as this driving, uptempo reworking of "Mannish Boy" by Muddy Waters makes clear. Lover Man - Just two weeks before their triumphant New Year's concerts at the Fillmore East in NYC [yielding both 1970's Band Of Gypsys and 2016's sequel Machine Gun], Hendrix gathered with Cox and Miles to cut this dynamic rendition of what had become a favorite concert staple. Stepping Stone - A totally unique take on this Hendrix favorite, with Jimi showcasing both blues and country styled licks atop a relentless, galloping beat. $20 Fine -Stephen Stills joined Jimi, Mitch Mitchell and Buddy Miles Express keyboardist Duane Hitchings at this September 1969 session. With Stephen handling lead vocals and organ, Jimi added multiple guitar parts to this rollicking Stills original. Power Of Soul - This 1970 studio session came three weeks after the Band Of Gypsys concerts at the Fillmore East. While a live version remains one of the highpoints of Band Of Gypsys, Jimi never released a studio version during his lifetime. For this album, we present the mix that Hendrix and Kramer prepared of the complete song at Electric Lady on August 22, 1970. Jungle - The influence of Curtis Mayfield can be heard here as Jimi expands on the "Villanova Junction Blues" theme he made famous by its inclusion in the 1970 Woodstock documentary. Things I Used To Do - Jimi is joined for this rendition of Guitar Slim's blues classic by Johnny Winter. Jimi's trademark guitar work and Winter's deft slide playing weaves in and around the foundation set by bassist Billy Cox and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young drummer Dallas Taylor. Georgia Blues - Jimi reunited with some old friends from his pre-Experience days. Lonnie Youngblood, with whom Hendrix played in R&B groups like Curtis Knight & The Squires, voiced this superb twelve bar blues neatly underpinned by Hendrix's sublime rhythm and lead guitar work. Sweet Angel - With Axis: Bold As Love only just released, Jimi immediately turned his focus to recording what would become Electric Ladyland. This gorgeous, instrumental reading of "Angel,", features Jimi on guitar, bass and vibraphone joined by Mitch Mitchell. Woodstock - Stephen Stills came to this session fresh from having visited Joni Mitchell, who had a new song that Stills was excited to try and record. Long before CSNY's version, Stephen, Jimi and Buddy Miles recorded this amazing rendition. Send My Love To Linda - A superb new Hendrix original composition recorded with Cox and Miles in the aftermath of their successful Band Of Gypsys performances at the Fillmore East. Cherokee Mist - Together with drummer Mitch Mitchell, Jimi created this moody, evocative original complete with his playing of a sitar to complement his traditional electric guitar.

  25. That all sounds very interesting. Living in Texas, everything is so far away for concert travel. Austin at 200 miles is the closet. There is no train service, so driving or flying are the only realistic travel options. Nonetheless, I have plans to attend three festivals in the first half of the year. Coming up shortly, the Friday and Saturday Marathons at the Winter Jazzfest in New York. This will be my fourth year in a row for this festival, which is really alot of fun--you can hear 4 to 6 bands in a given night at 12 venues, most fairly close together. In March, I'm going to try the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, which has a strong jazz line-up this year. And in April/May, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, which is a great experience. This will be my sixth one--I attended in 1987 and didn't go back until 2014--one of the dumbest things I've done. I'm not missing any more as long as I can.
