I was wondering about the appearance at Jazz Fest of The Jazz Epistles with Abdullah Ibrahim and Ekaya and Hugh Masekela. The group performs two days prior at Town Hall in New York, described as: Legends of South African music reunite for a historic concert to tell the story of The Jazz Epistles, arguably the most important jazz album ever recorded in its country’s history. Abdullah Ibrahim welcomes special guest musicians from his youth, and from the original Jazz Epistles band — superstar trumpeter Hugh Masekela, and the original trombonist from that session, Jonas Gwangwa — to reimagine music for his Ekaya Chamber Ensemble. This music was almost lost forever — only 500 copies were made in 1959, buried, and rediscovered decades later after the tyranny of apartheid. These giants of South African jazz tell their story at this extremely rare concert at The Town Hall in New York City. So it is Ekaya (my favorite Ibrahim formulation), with guests Hugh Masekela and Jonas Gwangawa.

An East Texas blues weekend for me, with two sets of genuine vintage blues/rock from the Ally Venable Band at Poor David's Pub on Friday, and a set of the raw blues of E.J. Matthews at Poor David's Pub on Saturday. E.J. Matthews, a very large man who plays acoustic guitar, sings in a raspy unrefined voice, and has written hundreds of original songs, plays a hybrid country/electric blues that has a very fierce drive. He was said to be gearing up for three SXSW showcase performances; I wish him luck.

It is a good record and worth seeking, but only on LP as far as I know.

I used to be a member but let it lapse. The orientation of the membership is primarily early jazz. There is a journal periodically if somewhat irregularly published. It is okay to read, somewhat amateurish, but not often of any great interest. There is also an annual convention somewhere in the U.S. or England. Really the only thing of value I got out of membership was to buy a bunch of their excellent CDs in a members only sale--but they had stopped putting out the CDs any more and were liquidating them.
