  4. George Braith, Extension (Blue Note, NY USA)
  5. The Les Spann is a very nice album and not too well known. I first came across Spann on "Side by Side"which was the first Ellington album I ever heard. I still have a soft spot for it. I don't find Spannn especially individual but Gemini is fine session which was recorded pretty well , even if my Jazzland pressing isn't too hot. I like it also; It is nicely recorded and this copy appears little played; I was lucky to find it at Academy Records in New York a couple of months ago--and a bargain at $12.
  6. The Genius of Art Tatum #9 (Verve trumpet label), and Les Spann, Gemini (Jazzland).
  7. Charlie Mariano, Jazz a Confronto 15 (Horo), and Laurence Brown, Slide Trombone (Clef)
  8. Musical categorization checklist: 1. Is there a vocalist? 2. If yes to 1, are the vocals in English? 3. If yes to 2, it is Pop Music. 4. If no to 2, it is World Music. 5. If no to 1, do the musicians wear suits and play in impressive concert halls built by their city or large charitable foundation? 6. If yes to 5, it is classical music 7. If no to 5, do the musicians speak one or more languages other than English? 8. If yes to 7, it is World Music. 9. If no to 7, it is Jazz. .
  9. Djessou Mory Kante, River Strings, Maninka Guitar (Sterns Africa)--This instrumental album, recorded in Bamako in 2012, is highly enjoyable. http://www.amazon.com/River-Strings-Djessou-Mory-Kante/dp/B00N2U6SU6/ref=sr_1_1?s=music&ie=UTF8&qid=1418908292&sr=1-1&keywords=Djessou+Mory+Kante
  10. Sam Newsome.
  11. Last night, Dave Burrell playing solo piano at a church in Houston for two and a half hours straight. That was pretty great.
  12. You mean I might drive three hours only to hear the Dave Burrell version of Silent Night and Jingle Bells? It might still be good, and as long as he plays some Jelly Roll Morton... I believe he plays "Grandma got run over by a reindeer." He didn't play any Christmas songs. However, at the end the beautiful and sad "Tears for Jimmy (Garrison)" he did promise to close with something happy--which he did (sort of), with a version of The Girl from Ipanema, though it was kind of a grimly twisted version of that song (the best version I've ever heard by far). The concert was fantastic, well worth the long drive. Dave Burrell was certainly in the mood to play, as he performed at 2 and a half hour set without a break. In addition to his own compositions, he played stunning versions of many standards--an amazing version of Lush Life, a wonderful April in Paris--it was a great experience in every way.
  13. Budd Johnson, Off the Wall (Argo)
  14. Have a Happy Birthday!
  15. Ordered from dustygroove, Terry Pollard (Betlehem/Japan), Theo Hill Live at Smalls (Smalls Live) and Ethiopiques 29.
  16. Sonny Terry and Brownie McGhee, Down Home Blues (Prestige/Bluesville)
  17. That looks great.
  18. Some pleasing new recordings for the year: Ahmad Jamal, Saturday Morning (Jazzbook). A late 2013 release, but 2014 for me. Really nice. Dave Burrell and Steve Swell, Turning Point (No Business). Piano and trombone duo. By the end I was hooked. Magos Herrera and Javier Limon (Okeh). Spare and beautiful vocal/guitar duos. Songs in Spanish, Portuguese and English. Jamie Saft, Bobby Previte, Steve Swallow, The New Standard (Rare Noise). Eric Wyatt, Borough of Kings (Positione). Azar Lawrence, The Seeker (Sunnyside) Melissa Aldana and the Crash Trio (Concord) Jason Moran, All Rise (Blue Note). Mike DiRubbo, Threshold (Ksanti) Nils Petter Molvaier, Switch (Okeh) Billy Harper and Randy Weston, The Roots of the Blues (Sunnyside) Blues: Lucky Peterson, Travelin' Man (JSP). Smoky Babe, Way Back in the Country Blues (Arhoolie) Albert King, Live in the 70s (Rockbeat) Brazil Marisa Monte, Verdade, Uma Ilusao Tour 2012/2013 (EMI) Adriana Calcanhotto, Olhos de Onda Ao Vivo
