Live jazz that could be seen and heard this week: Wednesday night at 7:30, Eldar Djangirov Trio on the University of North Texas campus in Denton, The Campus Theater. Sunday night, Greg Abate at the Jazz Depot in Tulsa, Oklahoma (5 p.m.). Not a chance I'm driving toTulsa on Sunday, but the Eldar Trio in Denton is a possibility to consider.

I guess they really don't like the cold. Well, maybe next year they'll do another summer tour. Either that or they really like the American version of Mexican food!

It was fantastic--a spirit lifting concert. The Winspear Opera House is a beautiful facility. This being Dallas, it was not sold out (maybe about 60% full); but most of the crowd was standing for the entire two hour concert, with the front of the hall being jammed with people. It was not the usual opera house crowd behavior, I don't think. There were two guitarists, bass guitar, four drummer/percussionists, two keyboard players, one saxophonist, and two backup singers along with Youssou N'Dour, whose voice was awesome. I picked up a couple of CDs of the group; Bercy 2013 is excellent and was representative of the sound of the concert. Shockingly, there are actually two more opportunities to see live African music in the following months--Tinarewen will be playing at the Granada Theater in November, and Rokia Traore will be in San Antonio early next year.

Tonight sure was a treat--Youssou N'Dour live at the Winspear Opera House here in Dallas. Wonderful in every way.

Surely the Modern Jazz on Dial is material other than the Bird sides? A James P. Johnson set would be great. A Bud Freeman set would be great, but I'm doubtful that I need more Eddie Condon in this lifetime.

Those are what I have (Red Baron). They sound good, as do the prior LP issues. Thanks! I'll see if I can get them for okay prices - seems offers online are a mess (confusing Vols 1 and 2 and the Collectables and those Sony/Red Baron ones). But I'll have to try, at least, since I really want to hear those! Only have some copies of LaserLight releases. There's also a 2CD set "The Great Chicago Concerts", with Django sitting in .... this set is out again on Nimbus, but with Nimbus you might get CD-Rs, so I don't feel like ordering ... You won't believe how great this "All Star Road Band" live recording sounds, particularly volume 1; recorded by Jack Towers.

Shelley Manne at the Blackhawk, volume 1 (Contemporary mono)

Last night, getting to Longview for the first day of the T Bone Walker Blues Fesival proved to be more difficult than anticipated, but ultimately I made it just in time to hear a long set by the Lurie Bell Chicago Blues Band with Eddie Clearwater. It's not usual to hear a working Chicago blues band in these parts, and they were good. Best of the lot was harmonica player Russ Green. Worth the drive. Next, the Eric Gales Trio followed. More rock than I normally go for, and I was wishing for his brother, the late Little Jimmy King; but despite a fair amount of absurd posturing, it was a pretty good group.

I'm wondering whether to make the effort to attend this concert, which requires being in downtown Fort Worth on a Thursday at 6:30 p.m.--is Shelley Carrol (Dallas' finest saxophonist) actually going to perform the entirety of A Love Supreme? And what will the Texas Tenor version sound like? Sep. 18: Shelley Carrol Quartet Transcendence: Coltrane’s A Love Supreme Tenor saxophonist, Shelley Carrol, performs the music of John Coltrane, including his masterwork, “A Love Supreme.”

Pre-ordered, Jason Moran, All Rise, John Coltrane, Live at Temple University, and 24 Classic Blues Songs from the 1920s, volume 11.

Earlier this year, I saw a version of Jason Moran's Fats Waller Dance Party in San Antonio. Ndgeocello, with whom I'm not familiar, was not present or part of the band, which consisted of Jason Moran on piano and electric keyboards, Taurus Mateen on electric bass, plus drums (not Nasheet Waits, but a very fine drummer nonetheless), trumpet and vocals. The vocalist was a woman from Houston who was a fairly traditional jazz vocalist. The concert was a complete blast; the group swung like mad; the compositions were great, of course. I enjoyed the experience greatly, but wondered if the record would turn out as good as the concert.

Coleman Hawkins Quartet, No Strings (Prestige stereo, Moodsville). Great recorded sound and stunning playing from the Hawk and her group. Frank Wess, Southern Comfort (Prestige, Stereo, silver and black label, Status sticker on cover), fine date arranged by Oliver Nelson (who also performs in the ensemble but does not solo).
