  1. Another Gottlieb masterpiece... Miles Davis and Howard McGhee in 1947!
  2. Revenge should be sweet. You just eat the damn beast! It's yummy! Although it looks like the Great Lakes lamprey is not edible. The lamproie in southwestern France is found in rivers only!
  3. Lamproie (Lamprey on the wrong side of the Atlantic) is one of the most disgusting fish I ever saw: Ventral view of lamprey's sucking mouthparts. But it's delicious. Just missed the Lamproie festival this weekend in the village of Sainte-Terre when I was in Bordeaux last week! http://www.sainte-terre.com/ You can click on 'Fete de la Lamproie' for details of the festivities and on 'gastronomie' for a recipe of the great dish Lamproie à la Bordelaise! All in Bordeaux-tinted english! Bordeaux people let the fish cook in the local wine, not the fish blood I usually avoid having a look at the beast and concentrate on eating this rare delicacy! Bon appétit!
  4. There are a number of good jazz photographers... then there are very few giants in the field. William Gottlieb was one of those! Among many favorite Gottlieb images, Coleman Hawkins and Miles Davis
  5. Glad to see Lady Aric back here! He is one of a kind! Another unique thread of his
  6. Looks like Muhal Richard Abrams who served as Pulitzer music juror had a lot to do with the citation. From The Los Angeles Times today:
  7. There's also that Dolphy video that I mentioned in an earlier thread! http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&hl=eric+dolphy
  8. $4,260 for this rare Dizzy Reece original!!! WOW!
  9. Lester Young taking part at some matinee jam sessions at the Village Vanguard in late 1940 is rather commong knowledge. Frank Buchmann-Moller's book 'You Just Fight For Your Life - The Story of Lester Young' lists Prez as appearing at the VV on Dec. 29, 1940 and on Jan. 12, 1941. The author also states that 'a recording of a radio broadcast from the beginning of 1941 exists'. The release of new Prez is awesome news. Goes tight to the top of my To-Get list! More good news is the return of our beloved mmilovan. Welcome back Milan! And don't do another one of your disappearing game once more!
  10. John Coltrane 'Lush Life' (Prestige Bergenfield yellow label)
  11. Ordering direct from Label Bleu in France seems to be working: http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...t=entry487741 Label Bleu releases can also be ordered from Cadence.
  12. Never saw that RVG issue but the new one looks like having a better copy - probably from the original negative - of the Wolff photo that was on the vinyl releases. Very slightly less croped than the original image to give a better idea of shades! And a very improved toning of the black and whites. Looks really much better now!
  13. Joyeux Anniversaire Steven Oh le bonheur d'avoir vingt ans
  14. Arriving late is a regal privilege! I'm no King only a humble servant claiming for clemency! A Happy Birthday to King Ubu
  15. I'm late but I mean well!! Happy Birthday, Alon
  16. ContemporaryladySF chickened out
  17. Arriving late for the party Hoping you had a great one
  18. Mine arrived today. Will take it with me and listen to it when I'll be away from home for the next few weeks! Many thanks, Evan!
  19. Sabir Mateen might be interesting! Better than Joan Crawford
  20. Our building has a concierge! Quite a number of Paris houses still have them. Ours comes from Poland. A very nice lady whose husband does all kind of little things when he has time off from his job. The previous ones hailed from Spain and Portugal. Most of the buildings in our neighborhood have Portuguese concierges. Not a doorwoman, ours does not call for taxis, we do that ourselves if needed. But it is great to have a concierge around. She takes care of keeping the building clean, distributes the mail, forward it when the residents are away and also takes care of the various plants when people are away. There was talk some years ago of getting rid of the position but the majority of tenants outvoted this. Our concierge also keeps whatever gossip to herself. Long live the concierge!
  21. Pepsi Jazz !?! From CNN Money...
  22. First time I heard Jackie McLean live was a major experience. It happened while I visited New York in October 1967. This was at Slug's. McLean led a quartet with Lamont Johnson on piano, Scotty Holt on bass and Rashied Ali on drums! The club was crowded that night. Pretty dark inside but the musicians were on fire! McLean played several numbers that were on the BN dates that were released at the time. I remember talking with Cecil Taylor and critic Robert Levin at the bar between sets!
  23. More than 2Ks for this Saxophone Colossus! Colossal!
  24. Philly Joe Jones 'Drums Around the World' (Riverside, stereo) with Lee Morgan, Blue Mitchell, Curtis Fuller, Cannonball Adderley, etc...

    Martial Solal

I'm sure I mentioned this excellent double CD somewhere but obviously not on this thread. It is indeed OOP now! So are the two CDs of other 1959-1964 Columbia material that came out in 1990 and 1992 in the EMI 'Jazz Time'series. First one was entitled 'Martial Solal - Jazz Et Cinéma, Vol. 1 - 1959-1964'. Second was entitled 'Martial Solal - Vol. 2 (1960-1962 Solos-Trios-Big Band)' Wonder what prevents EMI from keeping the material available? Maybe they're waiting for Solal to disappear! That might take a long, long time.
