  1. Monsieur Clementin, I have not heard much very recent Tsahar. I'm still digging the Hopscotch 'Live at the Fundaction Juan Miro' with Sonny Murray and Peter Kowald. Very impressed with that one! Also with a couple of Ayler albums - both with Hamid Drake - 'Sould Bodies, vol. 1' and 'Live at Glenn Miller Café'. There's food for the brain there! On a side note, I have been advised by friends to avoid Assif's mother who is based in Paris nowadays. I have stuck to the advice so far. But maybe I'm missing something there! Back to Yusef now!
  2. Shelly Manne & His Men 'The Proper Time' (Contemporary, mono) music by Joe Gordon, Richie Kamuca, Victor Feldman, Russ Freeman, Monty Budwig and Manne! sound by Roy DuNann!
  3. Ray Brown was the bass player on an early date on Dee Gee when the quartet was recording as the Milt Jackson Quartet!
  4. Tony Scott was under contract with RCA Victor at the time of that 'Modern Jazz Society' recording. His real name was used instead. He also appeared as Sciacca on the Milt Hinton quartet date on Bethlehem (Tony Scott's group in fact) around the same time! And count me too as a fan of the Modern Jazz Quartet going way back to the time Kenny Clarke was still the drummer!
  5. From The New York Times today.
  6. Yup. Going back at least as far as Tijuana Moods. Guy ... at least as far back as the Quintet of the Year 1953 concert at Massey Hall! Mingus went to Rudy Van Gelder's place to overdub his partly inaudible bass part before releasing the music on his Debut label.
  7. Jim, updating my paypal account to send a contribution! If you need more money, let us know. We need this Board
  8. Anyone familiar with Swedish TV show on jazz produced by Lasse Sari? I have on loan a private DVD that includes a show entitled 'Trumpeten' that has the Charles Mingus 1964 group with Johnny Coles, Eric Dolphy, Clifford Jordan, Jaki Byard, Dannie Richmond playing in an empty concert (or conference) hall). Produced by Sari. On the same DVD there is another show that features Eric Dolphy with Idrees Sulieman, Rune Ofwerman, Jimmy Woode and drummer Sture Kallin. Also produced by Sari. The 1961 Dolphy show is mentioned in the liner notes to the Enja release 'Stockholm Sessions'. Both have outstanding music. Any idea if these two TV shows have been commercially released on DVD? Also anybody know what other jazz shows were filmed by Lasse Sari?
  9. This week? How could I buy it two weeks ago second-hand at Jussieu Jazz? Absolute ditto to your comments on this wonderful disc! You obviously got a review copy! Many critics here (this happens elsewhere!) boost their income by selling the records they get free. Official release date for this CD was March 6!
  10. Just as startling and interesting is this album released this week over here by Nocturne and where Solal duets with trumpet player Eric Le Lann (who is among other gigs a member of the trumpet section in Solal's Dodecaband orchestra). This was recorded in 1999. It includes among other tunes, an exceptional version of Bronislau Kaper's 'Invitation'. Solal's solo there is a breathstopping marvel! Quite awesome to have two simultaneous releases of superb albums of Solal and trumpet duos!
  11. Dave Burrell 'High' (Douglas) with Norris Jones and Bobby Kapp (Sonny Murray on one track) plus Pharoah Sanders playing tambourine!
  12. That gets my vote, too. But this thread is about Blakey Messengers trumpet players Clifford Brown did not play with the Messengers, he played with the Art Blakey Quintet
  13. Dan, please note that I kept a copy of my BFT34 for you just in case you stopped by. If you're interested, pls PM me. Hoping you're having a good time!
  14. I have the Fresh Sound vinyl reissue of this Bethlehem with the original cover. The session with Freddie Redd and Dick Garcia. The title of the album is plain 'Joe Roland'.
  15. Ben Webster 'Scandinavian Days' (Rarities) various sides recorded between 1965 and 1969
  16. In view of the fact that the various tracks were picked to present a selection of neglected musicians (a number of them at least) or albums that did not have the right distribution, you did pretty well, Marty! I'll trust you'll read back the previous answers to have an idea on some of those tracks. A couple of brief remarks: track 5 comes from a West Coast session! the singer on tracks 9 and 16 is Gainsbourg indeed! And a final indication. I looked into the 'Penguin Guide to Jazz on CD' (7th Edition) and could not find any of the albums I selected!
  17. couw nailed it first, over there, but him being on vacation I guess it will take a while until he posts his guesses! couw said that he would not have time to take part in it. But he is very welcome to comment whenever he finds time! And he is the original one who opened his own BFT with the same music well before my time on these BFTs
  18. My humblest apologies to both King Ubu and Clunky who nailed that opening track They're the ones I had in mind when I commented on JSngry's answers. I had it in my messedup mind that they had done this in another thread of this BFT! I should have doublecked

Bush and Johnny E playing poker with some dogs. I don't want to see them with dogs But babes would do My last copy of BFT 34 will be mailed tomorrow!
  20. Elmer Bernstein 'The Man With the Golden Arm' (Decca, mono) great sountrack (with jazz arrangements by Shorty Rogers) to a great film by Otto Preminger!
