  1. More Jackie McLean: - 'McLean's Scene' (New Jazz) - 'Dr. Jackle' (Steeple Chase)
  2. Yes, it's the original release. Recorded October 29, 1969!
  3. Jackie McLean 'Swing, Swang, Swingin'' (BN mono, 47W63rd) an old favorite!
  4. My fondest memory of Jackie McLean was when he and Dizzy Gillespie, Phil Woods, Stan Getz, Milt Jackson, Hank Jones, Percy Heath, Max Roach and Billy Eckstine were all decorated with the medal of Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in the majestuous offices of the French Culture Ministry overlooking the Palais Royal back in June 1989 in the heart of Paris. McLean and others were beaming at being treated in such grand manners. Quite a gathering! There was a nice concert that evening by the musicians later that evening at La Grande Halle de La Villette! It was released on A&M. Heard McLean play (with Lamont Johnson, Scotty Holt among others) at Slug's back in 1967. Plus various concerts including an apperarance with the group that had Steve Davis on trombone at the New Morning here. McLean always delivered his best!
  5. That Clarke-Boland big band was magnificient. It produced a wealth of albums that are oustanding. One that is not listed and is well worth getting is the double CD of the October 1969 concert at the TNP/Palais de Chaillot concert that was released as part of the Europe 1 concerts discs series on the Trema label. Not a bootleg!

    Harold Land

Been a Harold Land fan ever since I heard him with the Max Roach-Clifford Brown quintet back in the fifties. I grew up on jazz with people like Land. The man was a giant! Caught him live only once when the Hutcherson-Land group performed at the Antibes jazz festival back in 1969. Outstanding performance. Wish I had heard him live more!
  7. Planning to post answers to BFT 34 on Monday... any last minute contributions welcome!
  8. Jackie McLean resided in Hartford, Conn., and died at his home. From the Hartford Courant today!
  9. A huge loss
  10. Christern, you must have loved the Billy Wilder film 'Sunset Boulevard'?
  11. Jimmy Cleveland 'A Map of Jimmy Cleveland' (Mercury, mono)
  12. That track is listed as 'Blues for Stu' on the Wettling Classics CD 909 according to the Classics catalogue that came out several years ago. It is master 4804-1. Don't have that Classics CD with me.
  13. First time I hear this was released as vinyl
  14. Art Pepper 'Gettin' Together' (Contemporary, mono) with Conte Candoli, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, Jimmie Cobb. Sound by Roy DuNann & Howard Holzer!
  15. Thanks for the advice, Larry! Will be looking for that 'Secret Broadcasts' set and fill my Miller gap!
  16. Benny Carter 'Swingin' the '20s' (Contemporary, mono) a quartet date with Earl Hines, Leroy Vinnegar and Shelly Manne. Sound by Roy DuNann!

  19. Someone to Watch Over Me or... Lush Life
  20. I've got way too many... ... but no Glenn Miller
  21. No need to apologize, Aanders! Donating for cancer is a worthy cause! Just make sure it really goes to the people who try to find a cure to it! Some of us (me included) sometime behave like dogs. But we don't bite! Just bark! So welcome here! And yes, we take the music seriously! But not fusion jazz
  22. Always heard Miles say 'I'll play it first and tell you what it is later' on that Prestige record session.
  23. Not only was Mobley mistreated, he was also mispelled on that Pacific Jazz release. His name comes out as Hank Mobely in Balliett's liner notes!
  24. Mtume Umoja Ensemble 'Alkebu-lan Land of the Blacks' (Strata-East double LP)
