Favorite "Plays the Music of..." Albums
brownie replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I have always been partial to the Monk plays Duke Ellington album on Riverside! Also love the Charlie Parker Plays Cole Porter album that appeared just after Bird's death on Verve. -
Solal and Griffin recorded their first (and only official date) CD 'In&Out' in 1999 for the Dreyfus label: http://www.dreyfusrecords.com/cgi-local/So...a=31%E2%8C%A9=0 The liner notes say they had only played together a couple of times at concerts. A very nice get together. Worth looking for!

Same here. I'm against deletions and banishments (I still disagree with Aric's permanent banning from the Board even if he went way over the yellow line...). The offensive posts should stay. The followups to these posts show how they were received (and treated in due fashion) by the people here!

Horace Silver also had to battle the piano at Cafe Bohemia when the Jazz Messengers recorded their BN albums there! Nearly as bad as the one at the Five Spot! Does not bother me that much. Silver and Waldron managed to make the best of the instruments. I still love those sessions...

Sounds good. Who needs an ignore button now?

Preferred Booker Little contribution remains the sides with Eric Dolphy. The Dolphy at the Five Spot volumes are on my Desert Island discs list!

The Masters of Jazz CD series was modeled as the equivalent of the prestigious La Pleiade collection of books from the French publishers Gallimard. The Le Pleiade books collection which started in the '30s and is still going strong aimed to have complete editions of most of the important writers. The ModJ CDs had covers that were also modeled along the stark white covers of the La Pleiade volumes (it's in French, sorry for non-French readers): http://www.gallimard.fr/collections/pleiade.htm And while they were in existence, they tried - and usually succeeded - to include everything that was available by the musicians they compiled editions of. That they did not maintain sufficient sales to get on with their intentions is a disaster of its kind! There is no equivalent to them. Not only were they very complete, they also took great care with the remasterings and liner notes. Too bad they did not succeed!

I've seen this one go for at least $150 in mono, if it has the ear. that and more... My mono copy has the 'ear' on both sides. I'm gonna be rich

Catching up on this... Che is out? He sure won't be missed... The air was starting to be poisonous here! I think I'll clear the air with a taste of a good Havana cigar -_-

If you could also bring track timing, that would be simply GREEEEEEEEAT! Agustin, here is the track list for the - French - Telefunken LP. Side 1: - Haitian Fight Song, 3;23 - Gone With the Wind, 6;08 - Hittin' The Blues, 5;40 - Blue Monk, 5;11 Side 2: - Averty, C'est Moi, 2;50 - Am I Blue, 3;25 - That Old Devil Love, 5;02 - 3+3, 6;15 - High Notes, 3;42 Francis Boland is listed as composer for High Notes (and 3+3). Hittin' The Blues is credited to Sadi (Fats Sadi), Averty, C'est Moi is by Solal. A typical Solal pun around French TV jazz film producer Jean-Christophe Averty's name. Avertissez-Moi means 'Let Me Know' and pronounces the same as the actual title! Montoliu is listed as playing on 'Hittin' the Blues'. Others are Sadi on vibes, Erik Amundsen onbass, William Schlopffe on drums and Franco Cerri on guitar. He also plays 'Blue Monk', a tria track with Amundsen and Schlopffe. And he is also among the various players on the following tracks: - Haitian Fightsong - Averty, C'Est Moi - Am I Blue - That Old Devil Love - High Notes
-
The Fresh Sound 'It's Standard Time' Charlie Mariano/Tete Montoliu both bear 1997 copyrights.

Are you sure your copy is the one I was asking for (Ensayo CD: ENY-CD 3473 - Boleros) and not Ensayo CD: ENY-CD 9770 - Boleros ? I had ENY-CD 9770 and copyright date is 1999. And I had supposed the ENY-CD 3473 was the first CD incarnation (or at least a previous one), and logically earlier in time. The Ensayo 'Boleros' I have is ENY-CD-9770.
