But at least to the GNP people, his name was a better attraction than Marty Paich; About those Art Farmer/Jim Hall Atlantic, I have an original mono of the superb Live at the Half-Note. The label is the regular orange and purple of the time, with a white band through the center. That white band features a fan logo on its right side. Those Atlantic originals are known as 'fan' (likewise some Columbia originals were known as 'six-eye' to refer to the Columbia label logos of the time). Orange and purple labels were for Atlantic monos. Stereos were green and blue. Now somebody correct me if I'm wrong!

This was originally released by Gene Norman Presents under Marty Paich's name. First a ten-incher, then a twelve-incher. Both in the '50s. It was also released as 'Tenors West' if I remember right. It was reissued in the late '70s as by Giuffre/Paich when Giuffre became 'famous'

The sound is amazingly bad. Whichever side you listen to, left, right, or mixed! The Fresh Sound CD is plain stereo without any gimmick. So much better! In any case, the $3 investment is very decent for that curio!

Dmitry, you'll find out as soon as you listen to the album. The sound on this vinyl is just awful. Fabricated stereo effect. Fresh Sound recently released the same session as 'Benny Golson and his Orchestra : Walkin''. The sound on this CD is much more natural and better! And you know I love vinyl!

Tony Scott was musical director for stripper Lily Saint-Cyr in the fifties. He led a quartet (with Oscar Pettiford on bass!) that backed her. Not sure if she sang or just stripped or did both at the same time

The date was Harold Land's. There are uncredited liner notes which do not add much to the album's enjoyment!

Saw an asnew secondhand copy of it at my favorite store. Was not too keen on getting the copy controlled version but it was on sale at €4,54 (about $5,50). I'm listening to this now. It will enable my vinyl mono album to get a well deserved rest!

The four sides that Marshall 'Red' Allen recorded with James Moody in Paris in July 1950 were included in the James Moody volume of the 'Americans Swinging in Paris' CD series from EMI that came out a couple of years ago.

Don Murray was best known as the clarinet player who soloed wildly on some of Bix Beiderbecke's most famous recordings. He is heard on 'Jazz Me Blues' and 'Royal Garden Blues' among other Bix sides. Murray also played violin!

Randy Weston 'Portraits of Thelonious Monk' (Verve)

Indeed! Was your grandfather the Lamar Wright who was in the Dizzy Gillespie big band that played at the Salle Pleyel in Paris in 1948? That concert is still spoken of in awe by those who were lucky to have attended it!

'Four on Six' on the new Verve CD issue is the same version that was originally on the Verve 'Smokin'' vinyl. It's the 6:43 version recorded at RVG studio. The 1988 Japanese Verve CD 'Smokin' at the Half Note, vol. 2' has a different version of 'Four on Six' that goes for 9:29. Will be keeping that one Another great job from the Verve clowns!

The EastWind vinyls were marvellous. Excellent music, superb packaging and audio. My copies are still as new and as glossy as on the day they came out of the producing plant. I have played them and enjoyed so very often! Also recommended EW vinyl was Al Haig's 'Duke'n Bird' Will be looking for that Andrew Hill 'Blue Black'!
