  1. Stumbled across a Parkwood label LP by saxophonist George Benson, George Benson Swings & Swings & Swings. Nice stuff, Like Stitt he played tenor and alto and I hear Stitt and Hodges as probably his biggest influences. This fabulous performance is from a year ago when he was 87! More vids on youtube from the same gig, and there are some other LPs on Parkwood and a full album of duets with the much younger pianist, Glenn Tucker, available at CDBaby: https://store.cdbaby.com/cd/georgesaxbenson2 I am having trouble copying and pasting but I am sure Mark Stryker can append his newspaper piece about Benson that he shared with me. Anyone know this guy? If you see the Parkwood releases, pounce!
  2. Well somehow I ended up receiving duplicates of some CDs, so here's your chance to get some of their stock at even cheaper rates than the now-concluded sale. Prices include USA shipping. First four are sealed. Bad Bad Whiskey - The Galaxy Masters (Specialty) - Charles Brown, Guitar Watson, Johnny Taylor - $6 Dootone Rock'n' Rhythm and Blues (Ace) $7 Goin' Down to Louisiana The Goldband Downhome Blues Anthology (Ace) $7 Honkin' N' Hollerin' R&B from the Radio Corporation Volume 1 (Westside) - comp of RCA releases $7 Get Hot - Sleazy Rhythm 'n Blues Volume 3 (Blazon Records) - comp of R&B by female artists, 1945-54 - $6
  3. Because its always nice riding the porcelain tsunami while hung over?
  4. OK, two votes against Sonic. My wife says she's had them and thinks they're great. Now I wonder if I'll agree or not. Unfortunately no Shake Shack in Naples. Mom is stuck with Five Guys but she already likes their fries so it should be fine. Me, not so much, cuz my wife rejects Five Guys due to perceived saltiness of the beef.
  5. Let's talk cooked dogs for purchase. Any comments on Sonic hot dogs? My wife and I are planning to bring in 4th of July dinner and I was thinking about trying one of their offerings. I know the concrete or the shake will be the highlight anyway but I've been wondering about those ... And what about Five Guys hot dogs? Mom told last night she is craving a hot dog and wants to get one for her own 4th of July dinner and since I only think of hamburgers at that chain I wasn't even sure if that was an option but I do see their online menu includes a few options.
  6. Weird, I don't have an Intro link. Home, About, Photos ... No Intro.
  7. Hmmmm ... I am not "friends" but all I see is a last post in August of 2011.
  8. Resonance turned him down. Next up is Blue Note and Uptown and maybe Jordi since he's put out archival things also, like the Carmell Jones set.
  9. I wouldn't pay for it either but its not 3 on 3 basketball. The balls, the court, everything is the same and I bet Phillipousis and Roddick hit just as hard as they did on the tour. So, yeah. Except, not so much.
  10. Of course its nostalgia. Nevertheless McEnroe is competing, and apparently beating, players up to 20 years younger. He's 57 for cripes sake. And as far as your first question goes, I'll say it: right now, Andy Roddick beats a not-pregnant Serena.
  11. Actually McEnroe is the third ranked tennis player on the senior tour, at the age of 57, and trails Mark Phillipousis who was about 15 years old when McEnroe retired, and Andy Roddick who was competing on the men's tour just a few years ago. Mac was #1 in 2014. http://www.powersharesseries.com/rankings.php
  12. Who cares if she'd be 700 or 500th in the world if she competed against men? The point McEnroe made is entirely accurate: She's been amazing against other women. She'd be less than pedestrian against men. In fact she played a guy ranked 203 at the time, and when she was a lot younger, as in almost 20 years ago. Here's his report: https://www.theguardian.com/observer/osm/story/0,,543962,00.html That last sentence is telling: "it never happened". Only it did. This whole kerfuffle is the result of that stupid reporter asking why it should be qualified that Serena is the greatest woman player, isn't she the really the greatest? Appallingly ignorant and McEnroe had to set her straight.
  13. OK, I think of that as the space that Uptown had to itself.
  14. I was going to list out the two models but I'll just throw it back at you: what exactly makes you think Resonance is following a part of the Mosaic model? And what exactly constitutes "smaller more focused affordable sets" when they basically issue archival recordings, one CD's worth, with exhaustive liners. The exhaustive liners, and assumed dedication to sound, are about the only things similar between Resonance and Mosaic.
  15. Frank Foster's Living Color, Twelve Shades of Black - For All Intents and Purposes (Leo) Just got this, seems like a rarity, a group separate from the Loud Minority all members of the better known agglomeration but half the size. Foster mentions in the liners that tunes and arrangements are different from the mothership. Made a stupid cheap offer on discogs which to my surprise got accepted.
  16. It is CD only so any vinyl won't get it. There are some other comps of note, anyone who doesn't have "Don't Freeze on Me" should consider that one if you like female blues vocalists.
  17. I think the announcement is to email people but try it by clicking on something and the new price automatically appears.
  18. I don't know if this is the best spot for it but I just got an email from Norton Records that they are trying to reduce inventory prior to a move and are offering 50% off every non-Norton label CDs. For me this means the remaining Stompin volumes (vintage blues and R&B) have all been scooped up at the low price of $7 a piece. Lots of other roots comps they offer so check it out! www.nortonrecords.com

  20. I hope so; at the moment I am only "spinning" can't monitor inputs to the PC while recording.
  21. Harold Ashby, The Viking (Gemini) w. Norman Simmons Trio accompanying
  22. Yeah, a little discogs investigation found another release on another label pf the same material and the notes on that page says its a Rose aircheck. Gotta say its better sound than I've heard on some of those Rose things. Also, Allen Eager. A nice addition and real cheap too.
  23. Tadd Dameron & Fats Navarro, Live at Birdland 1949 (Jazz Anthology) Stumbled across this during some shall we say 'enthusiastic' buying sprees on discogs. Impressive sound, I must say but I am left wondering if this had another more "official" release? Were there any airshots on the "Complete Blue Note/Capitol" two cd release? I just had a terrible thought, that this is all from that release, with fake applause and a claim its from Birdland. If I got snookered, please don't tell me.
