  1. Ben Webster Meets Don Byas (MPS) How the hell did I sit on this for so long? Anyway, new Ben! And Don and Tete too!
  2. Yes, before I posted I did a site search via google and much of the previous mentions of Kelly were remembrances by Joel.
  3. Thanks Larry that one caught my eye before. Also seems to be among the easiest to find too.
  4. Nobody else knows this guy? Looks like I got something for a BFT then ... Specially with a modernist like Wyands on piano.
  5. Thanks Paul I actually have the "Definitive" reissue of that LP. Hoping for suggestions on his recordings that are more tenor or tenor/trumpet + rhythm. There's a Live at the West End LP with Irv Stokes and Richard Wyands that I bet is very fine but it looks ridiculously pricey as a used LP on Amazon.
  6. I never had a GI Joe, with or without Kung Fu Grip. And those dog tags seem way out of proportion don't they? Anyway, RIP.
  7. Been enjoying two Black & Blue discs that feature Mr. Kelly (Roy Milton Instant Groove and Carrie Smith, No One Knows You) and been enjoying his contributions immensely. Any reccos? He seems to have led a few dates in his later years though not a whole bunch.
  8. Carrie Smith, When You're Down and Out
  9. Horace Parlan, Hi-Fly (Steeplechase)
  10. Does that show? Its the Steeplechase two-fer Magic in Munich, Cliff Jordan and Cedar, Sam, Smilin' Billy.
  11. Have you approached Blue Note to gauge interest in a release? How much music do you actually have on the reel(s)? (of course I realize Blue Note might not be interested but I imagine they'd have to sign off if Lee was a BN artist at the time, then you could move on to Resonance or maybe Uptown as a way to get this music to the public. Unless of course you're just teasing us ...
  12. I have to wonder how getting swamped with orders changes the fundamentals of the company. Maybe enough to continue on and fulfill some of the future projects but it seems to me they are only maximizing immediate revenue, but if they pass the immediate crisis, revenue still won't match expenditures in coming months. The only way I can see them continuing as a going concern is if they attract capital from a label or a sugar daddy jazz lover.
  13. I guess if we're lucky this email will get enough people off the fence with enough purchases to replenish the coffers enough for them to struggle on and maybe to another new release?
  14. Well JAW did complain, mid-thread, about the drift of the conversation. What his problem is I won't hazard a guess but it's not very neighborly of someone who mentioned how he doesn't post here anymore, but ... and then delete the thread mid-discussion. Not cool, and its seriously colored my attitude about him.
  15. Oh barf. A thousand times, barf. Do the Yankees give a class in arrogance in Spring Training? Maybe they teach everyone a special song, sung to the tune of "When You're a Jet"? And what is even worse is that an interviewer could ask that question. Do we have any recorded examples of someone asking Mike Trout, Kris Bryant, Mookie Betts or any of a dozen legit superstars that question? That "journalist" should go back to school and re-learn the lesson about "don't ask questions while your subjects junk is in your mouth."
  16. I think its the 10 to 15,000 cable subscribers they have been losing every month for I am not sure how many years. Wish I had a link to the article where I got that statistic from but basically its becoming an unsustainable business model - all the money they are paying out for rights fees, and the revenue can't sustain it any longer. First they had massive layoffs of production staff, now its high-priced on-air "talent".
  17. I'm glad we can disagree without being disagreeable.
  18. Dave Alexander, The Rattler (Arhoolie) Listened to this right after Otis Spann, This is The Blues and ... its not even close. Alexander was a monster! <ducks for cover>
  19. Awfully short track times, that's for sure.
  20. Revisiting this one (funny almost exactly a year later) but I just discovered something seemingly impossible to believe. My VLC software is identifying this as, well, check out the attachment. Now I am pretty sure we've had a discussion of the auto-identify feature and how it can mess things up but ... I transferred this from LP. What are the odds that I would cut off the ends of each track such that all 10 tracks matched this other CD? I've had plenty of commercial CDs get misidentified (last week I was listening to a four set disc of Louisiana Blues and three came up right, and one was totally off the wall). But I've never had this happen. Still a fun listen ...
  21. Well that will make a man click on a thread he rarely reads. What, praytell, puts Korean porn on its own level? Do they up the ante from Japanese porn and pixelate the entire screen?
  22. Totally forgot about this, never bought it, but I did like the way they made a Liberty-era cover for it.
