  1. One of my top five desert island discs was a "blind" purchase, and you can imagine how important it turned out to be to the future Gene Harris Fanatic: Stanley too, but this one was critical for introducing me to both the Sounds and Gene Harris specifically. I remember seeing it in the store - it was a mall CD shop outside St. Louis - and thinking the cover and the title were very intriguing. When I played it the first time I was completely blown away and I particularly loved the way that on the first track, Gene and Stanley traded off the solos, back and forth instead of one, then the next, theme and out. This was the first jazz recording I played using headphones and turning the lights off - of course some people would say its a great way to hear the record cuz it puts them to sleep, but I wanted to be enveloped by the music with absolutely no other sensory input of any kind. Blue Train is another blind purchase that blew me away. What a critical step in my listening. I loved each track and I remember being particularly enamored of Kenny Drew's blues-infused piano. I bought Bluesnik not long after because Drew was on it. And of course Lee Morgan made a major impact on me, leading me to start looking for his recordings. I've mentioned this before - I was such an uninformed newbie that about halfway through the second track, I was looking at the back of the LP to see if I could find a recording date. The only year said 1987, and I thought to myself "I wonder if this Coltrane guy has recorded anything more recent." :blush2: Great idea for a thread, Paul.
  2. Thank heaven there's a Victor Feldman in the stacks (actually, binders): with Carl Perkins, Leroy Vinnegar, Frank Rosolino, and Harold Land
  3. Unfortunately you can't get it done against us. Since the Sox tagged Jiminez for 6 runs, of course they get to Lincecum for 4, knocking him out after 3 innings or something. Lester all the way, giving the bullpen a nice two day rest heading into Tuesday against the struggling, and now fighting amongst themselves Rays. Seriously, that was a ticked off Upton getting called by Longoria on a surprisingly lackadaisical chase after a ball that went for a triple and preceded a two-run homer that was the margin of victory for Arizona. Hopefully this doesn't bring the Rays together but the pressure of a rough month will keep them scrambling.
  4. OK, if we're reorienting the line, my first Conte: With Guaraldi, Buddy Collette, Leroy Vinnegar and Stan Levey
  5. First Horace Horace, Hank, KD, Watkins and Blakey (and Bill, sorry but I guess we skipped over you)
  6. was my first, because I was on a Frank Strozier jag. After that I went after the Blackhawk recordings. Frank Strozier Conte Candoli Russ Freeman Monte Budwig
  7. So every post on the thread other than the most recent one is "dead?" Correct, as I originally referenced "Name Three People" as partial inspiration. One leads to the other, you don't grab something from before when the trail has moved on. I got a Jimmy Gourley but its relatively recent: That's Ralph Moore, Don Sickler, Marc Johnson, Victor Lewis
  8. And rather than being "dumb" the fact that this thread goes out 4 pages indicates David isn't alone in buying recordings by artists he's not really enamored of. You don't "get" that such a thing could happen, or, heaven forbid, someone actually not like "one of the greatest Parker inspired blues infused alto players" - big fucking deal.
  9. Since when is personal opinion about a musician "an insult"? Are you insulted that David doesn't care for McLean's playing even though he's bought so much of it? Are you that desperate for validation of your own preferences? Do us a favor and buy yourself a clue.
  10. Pretty sure the first Morgan date bought by Mogie Man was Introducing on Savoy. with Hank Mobley, Hank Jones, Doug Watkins and Art Taylor
  11. Gotta play off of Stephen Scott: Something to Consider with Craig Handy, Justin Robinson, Roy Hargrove, Joe Henderson, Peter Washington, Tain Watts, Lewis Nash and Christian McBride
  12. Gregory Hines Earl Hines The Duke of Earl
  13. Ah damn, you have my sympathies. While I'm not a Red Sox I have the utmost admiration for Pedroia and how he plays. No disrespect to Youk or others but I think he is the last guy you want to lose. Its just brutal. Cardafo is reporting 6 weeks. And they wore out the bullpen today because Buchholz pulled up lame trying to run the bases! Fucking interleague bullshit. Hyperextended left knee - who knows if he'll miss a start or not. B - R - U - T - A - L
  14. Does anyone know if Ellis Marsalis has any big health problems? Because it occurs to me that this might be an effort to honor him while he's alive, and part of that is what his progeny has accomplished. So maybe this started as an Ellis Marsalis thing and became a Marsalis family thing? Because there's just no possible reason to honor Delfeayo or Jason (we can at least argue Wynton and Branford).
  15. You're taking this seriously, Jim, with all those discog links! but I have a Buster Williams as leader date: Unless someone has another Buster date, we've got Steve Nelson, Mulgrew Miller and Carl Allen.
  16. Post 10: I believe we have an illegal sequence here, since Tadd Dameron didn't play on Blue Train. All posts after post 9 are therefore invalid. -_- Perhaps Coltrane isn't properly considered co-leader but I certainly think of it is as such, and therefore it was Steve's identification of his first Coltrane purchase. Von Freeman, Chico Freeman (ts) Cecil McBee (b) Jack DeJohnette (ds) Kenny Barron (p) and if you must... Ellis Marsalis (p) Wynton Marsalis (tp) Branford Marsalis (ts) Charles Fambrough (b) James Black (ds) I'll go with Kenny Barron: It might have been one of his trio recordings but I'll go with this one, I know I bought it at a similar time. John Stubblefield, Eddie Henderson, Cecil McBee and Victor Lewis give some more options forward.
  17. Pedroia fouled one off his foot last night, left in an aircast and returned today to find that his foot is broken. No timetable for a return, surgery not ruled out. Its over and finished. So I am going to hope that the Rays get it together and the Rangers make that trade for Cliff Lee so they will finally have the firepower to beat the MFAL* Yankees, especially in a five game series. * acronym explained on request
  18. First Roy Haynes as a leader: with Kenny Garrett, Roy Hargrove, Dave Kikoski and Dave Holland Seems to me Haynes could get us moving further backward in time but Garrett and Hargrove could move things toward neobop. either way, I'm happier than heading toward Braxton land!
  19. Vibrations is like Live at the Lighthouse in that it also has Gene overdubbed on organ (on just a few tracks). I'd get Live at the Lighthouse first as the band really cooked on those dates. If you like Live at the Lighthouse then you'll probably like Vibrations too but I'd probably recommend all of the earlier trio recordings ahead of it.
  20. Since I was first a Dexaholic, I have to stick with Dexter:
  21. Officially, no, if you pick another date by the leader it should also be a leader date; if you pick a date by a sideman its supposed to be a leader date too, but I'm not quite so sure we should stick with that latter rule. It does open things up if we relax that requirement. Since Colin jumped in while I was searching for an image, I'll work off of him and offer my first Herbie-as-Leader purchase. Without a doubt its the classic Watermelon Man Takin' Off. :blush2: Anyone with a Dex?
  22. Yeah, we've got a split going but I don't want to give Larry a hard time since he came back to contribute after muddying things up. The way this is conceived, its interesting if you get into what I'll call the post-Coltrane side whether you can get back into our hard bop sweet spot. Same thing if you get into some younger neoboppers. I know if we get to Don Cherry, I can lay down Art Deco which brings in James Clay. I kinda want to see what happens ...
  23. Apparently if we ever revert to a hunter-gatherer society, some of us will be in some deep doo-doo.
  24. Pretty sure my first Hank was Hank Mobley Quintet with Art Farmer, Horace Silver, Doug Watkins and Art Blakey I remember thinking "its practically a Jazz Messengers recording by another name!"
  25. Taking Pepper Adams I'll go with Out of This World - The Complete Warwick Sessions, Donald Byrd - Pepper Adams Quintet Another very early purchase at a Tower in NY. What resource that was whenever I was home in CT and could take the train into NYC.
