The years with a single week between conf. championships and SB are so much better...we're spared a full week of media drivel. I'm a Jints fan and also like the Pats (due to the BB->NYG connection) and still can't stand to read the crap out there. Whether its a week of crap or two, its still easy to ignore. So I'd rather have two weeks for minor injuries to heal and have a better game, or at least the potential for a better game.

Sort of like Madonna.

An interesting remark from one for whom neither English nor American is first language. Why side with us? MG Indeed. Is there a "u" sound in "color"?

Just what I was thinking, Jon.

Baseball Steroid Thread
Dan Gould replied to Brownian Motion's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
How about Roger's agents ridiculous 18000 word "report" on Roger's career stats (which looks more like a salary arbitration argument than anything else)? As if anyone ever said that steroids automatically turn you into Walter Johnson. If they had that kind of effect, every pitcher in the game would be on them. But as most people understand, its about how they effect recovery after workouts, the ability to work out harder, more frequently ... all things that have marginal effects when it comes to a pitcher's season statistics. But if Roger really wants to play that game, McNamee's lawyer should put out a much shorter report, summarized thusly: Clemens record on June 10, 1998: 6-6, 3.75 On or around June 11, Clemens began steroid use Clemens record after June 10, 1998: 14-0, 2.25 -
In Olympics, Eric Heiden! At the 1980 Lake Placid Games, he won gold in all five men's speed-skating events. Can't do any better than that... Al Oerter threw the discus at four Olympic Games, and won gold every time, though he was generally considered an underdog. Emil Zatopek won gold in all three events he competed in (5000m, 10000m, marathon) at the 1952 Olympics. Paavo Nurmi won gold in all five Olympic events he contested at Paris 1924 (one was a team cross-country race). He wasn't too shabby at Antwerp 1920 either: two individual golds, one individual silver, one team gold. Teofilo Stevenson won 3 consecutive Oly golds in heavyweight boxing, and had a reputation for invincibility. Alberto "El Caballo" Juantorena won the 400m/800m double at Montreal 1976, the only athlete to ever accomplish the feat. Edwin Moses had an incredible unbeaten streak in the 400m hurdles (122 races, 107 finals). Set four WRs, won two Oly golds (1976 and 1984; USA boycotted 1980). [Edited to add more athletes and include non-US ones. I used to be an athletics (track and field) fan...] While you can certainly argue about whether it constitutes true "perfection" I will nominate David Ortiz in the 2004 American League Championship Series, for his game winning home run in Game 4, eighth inning homer in Game 5 and game winning hit in the 14th inning, and his two run homer in the first inning of Game 7. Every time he had the opportunity to do something crucial for his team, he came through.

Yeah and I'm sure that's the same rule you'd propose if it applied to the QB of the team you're supporting.

If its Maria Sharapova on the court, I don't care if its an old match - I'll watch. But in general I watch for both the excitement of the competition and the shot-making skills, so I have no problem watching the Men's final knowing the result in advance. I think Wimbledon is pretty easy to watch live in the states - at least on the east coast. Tougher out west when Breakfast at Wimbledon starts at 6 AM. -
General Tso's chicken with steamed white rice - but only from a gentleman who closed his restaurant in Fort Lauderdale after eight months of the most delicious yet cheap chinese food I've ever had. Dessert would probably be something from Coldstone Creamery , and since its my last meal, I'd go for the really huge Gotta Have It serving. If Coldstone is too busy, something from Friendly's would be fine, too.

I think the proper adjective is "unknown" - but this is a really cool sounding recording and I am surprised he wouldn't try to sell the recording to Fantasy. Certainly would be highly marketable, assuming the necessary clearances can be obtained.

Rapidshare has limits on how much you can download if you are using a "free" account but there are ways to defeat that. If you have a high-speed modem, simply unplug and re-plug the device. You'll have a new IP when you go on (close your rapidshare browser window first) and you can download the next portion without waiting an hour or two. How can you tell if you have a high speed modem or not? (Stupid question of the week/month/perhaps year, but I really don't know.) MG If you have a broadband connection, you have a high-speed modem. If you "dial-in" to your ISP, you don't.

I, for one, refuse to do that--it's far too revealing. So, your username has nothing to do with your given name? Ooooh Kaaaaay. I think it's a po-faced joke, Dan. MG Then standard BB protocol requires some sort of smiley indicating irony.

A good print lifted from the crime scene was the clincher? You don't say. I guess watching TV has its advantages. Seriously, Joe I am very pleased to hear that the bastards got caught and will face charges (keep us informed) and that you are getting at least some of your stuff back.

2008 New Orleans Jazzfest lineup announced
Dan Gould replied to GA Russell's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I saw on the CNN scroll the headliners - Stevie, Sheryl Crow, Billy Joel, Tim McGraw. What a joke. The estate of Louis Armstrong should sue to force them to remove the word "jazz" from the name. -
Peter said it all for me.

I don't think someone's first name remotely constitutes "personal information" of the sort that would possibly be risky in any way. If your username was your personal email, then I might agree. Telling us your first name is simply being friendly and open on a board that tends to be more "familiar" than most.
-
maybe if more people put their first names in their signatures there would be a lot less confusion. ------- Bev - No, I'm a guy, its a British thing. ------ Fran - actually, its Frank, but I hit <enter> too soon plus learning the first names of a lot of other people here. C'mon folks, its not like you're revealing everything.

Well, I was going to wonder aloud if the guy who took Nadal out could handle Federer too, only to find out just now that Federer had his streak of Slam finals ended by the guy who he beat at the US Open last year. Somewhere, Pete Sampras is smiling. -

Venus yes, Serina questionable. She destroyed Sharapova in straights last year at the Australian. I believe Sharapova was hurt almost all of last year. She destroyed Henin - I think she would have taken care of Serena, too. -

Are you kidding? I read many opinion pieces and new stories that tore the s--- out of Clemens after his press conference and further stuff from his camp (the news stories implicitly doubtful, the opinion pieces explicitly doubtful or worse), plus I heard lots of stuff on sports talk radio in the same vein (obviously, I'm wasting my life). Yes, I read some stuff that gave or tried to give Clemens a pass, but my honest impression was that it was at least 60-40 Roger is lying, maybe more than that. I'd say the percentage is closer to 80-20. You have to look far and wide to find a print journalist argue against Clemens' guilt (don't know about sports radio, I avoid them like the plague - plus I wouldn't be surprised if sports radio finds more Clemens defenders, based on the need to take positions that will generate phone calls). -
I haven't taken advantage but I think the most common sale gets you discounts on regular CDs through True Blue, so you don't often get great discounts on any Mosaic set.

Remember that MG never studied US history. "Federalism" has no meaning to him.
