  1. Polls open at 7 am, and close as late as 8 or 9 pm (never before 7 pm). So many people go to vote before or after work. I'd imagine that employers would be understanding if one went to vote at lunch time and were a bit late getting back.
  2. I liked Robin Williams in the flick about the creepy photo shop dude.
  3. UP, cause this CD is flat out terrific! Morgan may come straight out of Bird, but I just love his tone, so expressive, soulful and personal. Great tunes on this, too: two Monks, two Coltranes, and an excellent cover of "All Blues". I'd heard when Morgan had a stroke a couple or so ago, but I was surprised to learn in the liners that he actually was gigging again about six months after. Clearly, his playing has not suffered the way OP's playing did after his stroke, and I really can't recommend this set enough, to Morgan fans, or anyone wanting to check him out.
  4. Well, if I'm not mistaken, the Four Freshman and this set are the first Mosaics for vocalists, aren't they? Myself, I wouldn't at all mind a Joe Williams Roulette Mosaic. There's some good stuff in there, aside from the two sets that came out on the Williams/Sweets reissue a few years back.
  5. Maybe the hyperbole is in direct relationship to the fact that these albums are known to have been originally aimed at the pop side of things? In other words, Michael knows this one is a tougher sell, so he's pushing it a bit harder.
  6. I realize this may be considered a "political" issue but electoral incompetence is non-partisan, so I figure it belongs in this forum. So my question is: How well organized was your voter precinct? Was the wait long, short? Do you have touchscreen machines or something from the last millenium? Did they work without a hitch? And do any of you have precincts located in Churches? I do, and frankly I think its wrong. Voting should take place in public buildings, schools, etc. Not churches, where I found three different signs encouraging me to pray for my country and for my leaders. I also had some woman walk down the line telling people, "pray before you vote!" to which I had to respond, "Excuse me, this is America-we may choose to pray before we vote, or we may choose NOT to pray before we vote." That shut her Christian Fascist mouth pretty quick. But I digress. How did the machinery of elections work for you? While the touchscreen system seemed to work well, it was ridiculous that there were only three machines for my precinct. The bottom line-I was in line ten minutes before the polls opened, there were about thirty people ahead of me. I didn't complete the ballot until an hour after the polls opened.
  7. Maybe people would if you gave us a label.
  8. A blog is a soliloquy. A bulletin board is a conversation.
  9. He's quite the Renassaince Man! Bass Player, Blakey Lover, Advice Columnist Extraordinaire!
  10. We didn't touch on that, but yes, Eddie and Meredith remain together. Thanks for the compliment.
  11. UP! I have fixed the operating system issues and can now offer burns of these two movies in both Quicktime format and as Flash movies. No reason why they shouldn't run on any PC, so I hope I can get a few people interested. Blues for Bartok, where are you?
  12. Maybe sometime after I get it transcribed! I know, its terrible, but that's the truth. Technical problems made it difficult when I had time to transcribe, and since the technical problems were solved, certain other stuff has conspired to keep me from returning to it.
  13. The Mosaic Select consists of all of his Blue Note albums, so Star Bright is contained in its entirety.
  14. He lives in Miami and gigs when he feels like it. About a year or two ago I missed a chance to see Ira gig with Eddie Higgins. And speaking of Higgins, after my interview with him, I tried to use that connection to get an interview with Ira. Eddie graciously agreed to call him. He told him that he had done an interview with me, it went very well, and would he consider doing one also? Ira asked Eddie if he'd been paid for doing the interview and when told he hadn't been, said in no uncertain terms that without payment, he wouldn't do it! Who did he think I was working for, the National Enquirer? After relaying this, Eddie told me that Ira can be a bit of an "odd duck". No sh*t.
  15. I got this from the Bastards a few years back in original vinyl form. I second the recommendation, though perhaps not quite so enthusiastically.
  16. I myself am a Cub fan by birth ... adopted the Sox in '75, hooked forever in '78. Meanwhile, my brothers became Yankee fans, leading to life-long animosities (and monumental stickball or wiffleball games in the backyard: when we played, we were the Yanks and Sox, and we each assumed the batting stances of every player in the lineup (I loved going up on my front toe and bending forward for Yaz, and that Jim Rice bat waving Before Game 4, my Dad told me he's pulling for us, but he's afraid he'll jinx us, having pulled for losers for so long. Now we just have to bring a title to Wrigley. They have the core of pitching, they just need a closer and some more bats. But I have faith! And Impossible, if you didn't hear, the Sox visit Wrigley June 10-12th next year!
  17. I got the Highnote release for my b-day and its mighty fine.
  18. Not in the slightest. He was very firm on that point, that while his friends thought he was nuts, he made the right decision.
  19. Got it Friday. Thanks, Dmitry!
  20. I figured this deserved a separate thread, even though the cat left the bag in the other one. The Eddie Higgins interview that was accepted for publication one year ago has finally reached print in the November issue of Cadence. The interview was long enough that it will carry over into the December issue. In this issue, however, is what may be the most interesting aspect for some members, Eddie's explanation for why he turned down Art Blakey's offer to join the Jazz Messengers. He says some somewhat surprising things about the band. I'd planned to scan the front page of the interview and have their permission to do so, but I've got problems with the scanner. Hopefully I can get it fixed soon. In the meantime, I invite everyone to look for a copy of Cadence or you can order individual issues for something like $5 at 315-287-2852.

  22. David, Thanks a lot for the link to the Axeman story. Never heard of it before, very interesting!
  23. But its not Weinstock, if that's who you were thinking.
  24. I think GoM is right, or perhaps the reference is to a band of junkies playing slower than they should due to their condition?
