Hurricane Frances check-in

I don't think he's been back, but I did get a message from Marty that power was finally restored in Boynton not quite two days ago. 'Course, now we've got Ivan to worry about. -
That's it, Eric takes care of all tips in the future! As far as that "don't tip the owner" rule goes, I can see that the boss is doing fine, he needs no tip from me, but once you start tipping, how do you stop? But he's a good barber with a steady business, and he doesn't have employees. He told me the other hair stylists pay monthly rent on their chair, so his overhead is easily taken care of, he pays no employer taxes since they're all independent contractors, and he even gets a dollar or two on every haircut they give. Nice job if you can get it ...

Jeopardy winner on a roll

CNN was running an article reporting (I believe) an AP piece that he had been beaten. But no confirmation, of course, and no one knows when the losing episode might air (they film five a day, so who knows how many were in the can before he got beat, assuming the report was accurate?) http://www.cnn.com/2004/SHOWBIZ/TV/09/09/t...y.ap/index.html -
I've heard the 'don't tip the owner' rule but I ignore it. My barber charges $17, I give him a $20 bill. Unfortunately, come January, his price will go up to $18 and at that point I will need to have a single or two on hand when I go. As far as general prices go, you can still find barbers that charge $10 is smaller towns like Tallahassee Florida, but they're a dying breed. And as far as European prices/tipping practices, I'm not surprised by what ubu says. Here in south Florida, many restaurants "automatically" add an 18% gratuity to your check, because so many European tourists simply assumed that the tip was included in the bill, and would therefore leave no tip at all. Different strokes for different folks, but here at least, you still tip regardless of the price of the service, and the tip on food service is not assumed.

I checked with a Detroit record dealer-don't know what his source was, but he identified it as J-V-B 58, but with only two tunes, Kenny's Sound and My Funny Valentine, so maybe it was a 45? [Mike, while I have your attention, did you see the ebay listing that had another test pressing of some obscure Transition album, with two different tunes than the ones you list? There was a posting in that Transition thread, but I don't know if you saw it or not and maybe updated your info ...]

Serena Williams vs The World

If it were a Yugo, I'd still take the car! -
Yeah, but blink again and they're back in print. I got the Bennie Green Hornful of Soul the last time it was available, either from Mr. Tanno or The Bastards.
-
Mike, are you sure about your dates? In a footnote to this article, written by Jim Gallert and Lars Bjorn, I found this: Interesting, also, is a mention in the article that there's an upcoming Uptown records release: Maybe that Burrell material is part of it? Maybe Chuck has some inside info?

Okey dokey. Swept the Angels. Two out of three from Texas. Swept the A's in Oakland. That's 20 wins in their last 22 games. 2 back in the East; 5 up in the Wild Card. Did you hear about the T-shirts Kevin Millar distributed this week? Borrowed a line from "Tombstone": Tell Them We're Coming (front) And We're Bringing Hell With Us (Back) Cowboy Up!

FWIW, last year she was cast in an off-broadway show about Janis Joplin and got killer reviews.
-
Hey! I don't care what you say - I'm countin' it! Go for it-you're definitely entitled! Glad you enjoyed the discs ...
-
No "In Between?" or "Space Book?" On the one hand, I could say, "not yet." On the other hand, I could say, "Hey, Booker only had one solo, so don't I have enough of it already?"
-
Are we talking about cassettes or reel to reel? Not that it matters, but in the same way that you feed your LP audio into the burner, you need to feed your tape source in and you should be good to go.

I have to say, I heard about Brown right before going to bed the night before the hurricane arrived, and it was the first deep belly laugh I'd had since the hurricane started bearing down on us.

When I originally conceived the BFT as a single disc plus bonus, it was because I planned to put the Plas tune on the bonus disc. When I realized that Plas still fit the theme, that was when I decided to make it a two disc-single theme BFT!

Hurricane Frances check-in

Final update: Power was restored last night at 8 pm! Back in the old homestead, slept in my own bed, now drinking my own brewed coffee ... B-) Now, I just need to get down to my office building and see what's what. But from what I've gathered, Boca Raton is still suffering the after effects, and my best bet is, no power yet. Maybe I'll have the rest of the week off! -
DING DING DING DING DING!!!!!! OR, to put it in the exact words in which I conceived it, "One Degree of Blue Note" B-) Cool theme, yes? Think I'll go and edit my original post and emphasize the connecting elements ... Congrats to Mike Weil for pointing in the right direction and Jim Sangrey for bringing it home!
-
Players, tunes, composers .... as I said, just tweak Mike Weil's theme.
-
Obviously, you can only burn an LP in real time. I'm talking about a PC burner, not a standalone, so all my LP burns are first recorded as wav files, then burned, or if they're being duplicated, extracted as a wav and then burned from the hard drive.
-
Perhaps its true but that wasn't what I was looking for.
-
Oh so close to a Think harder, study the names some more, and tweak your theme just a bit.
-
I guess my friend "Harold" doesn't have too much to say at the moment ... But I will say that the Yankees insistence that the Devil Rays should forfeit the game they couldn't leave Tampa in time for is just plain pathetic. They're really embarassing themselves and showing a total lack of class. And as John Kruk said on ESPN, "would the Yankees be asking for a forfeit if their starting pitching weren't in disarray?" I guess when the choice is, start Loaiza, or try desperately to be handed a victory through a bogus forfeit claim, go for the desperation ploy-you've got a better chance of winning that way.

Hurricane Frances check-in

Well, here's the status: Power went out 11:45 PM Saturday morning. Still out at this hour; my wife and I headed up to her Mom's house in Jupiter to enjoy AC, warm showers and brewed coffee (yes, Jupiter got hit hard, but somehow they have power and we don't). Worst damage: the fence on one side of the property failed. Biggest annoyance (during the storm itself, not the A/C-less aftermath): Our neighbor (who's been a pain the ass since we moved in) chose to abandon the property and do nothing whatsoever to secure it in any way, shape or form. The problem? Left on her patio is: Two Smokers One propane grill plus extra tank glass top table pieces of a weight lifting set etc., etc. So, when the fence came down, all of a sudden we're staring at a bunch of things that may take flight at any moment and crash into our house! We called the police-they said that we have every right to do whatever we think is necessary to make ourselves safe, so when we got a chance, we ran over there in the rain and wind and got everything inside her screened-in porch. Took all of ten minutes! That's all she had to do before she got the hell out of Dodge, but NOOOOO! Can't wait til the crack whore starts bitching at us for moving her stuff. Current status: We cleared up all the yard debris and dismantled the sections of downed fence, so really, we're just waiting to hear that the power is restored, and then we're back home. (You'll know when that happens when I've resumed my normal posting habits. )
