Thanks again for the BFT, Marcus. This set a modern record for number of discs I own or have owned. As to the details: On number one, at least I pegged the era right, even if it was just an attempt to recreate it #2-I had this Teodros Avery CD when it came out but I didn't hang onto it. I know I said that it took me a while to identify this standard-I was sure I recognized it as such but as I named it in my head, I didn't write it down and couldn't figure it out again. So I figured I'd fudge it, assuming someone else would ID it for me. I'm really surprised this is an orignal it sounds so darn familiar. As far as the Golson goes, I just ordered this myself, Brownie, but I had no idea at the time (two nights ago) that it was on this BFT. #8-the track selected is a good reason why I didn't keep the disc ultimately. That's a trane ride I generally avoid. #13-I said that this was terribly familiar and very annoying that I couldn't figure it out ... well now I know why. I've had this Buddy Montgomery CD for a while now, and its all quite nice and definitely recommended. #14 is the other one that I own but didn't recognize. Probably cause I have a congenital aversion to anything connected to Sting. Thanks again, Marcus!

Rafael, You don't have to buy a turntable. Much of what you want is out on CD; there's a lot of classic recordings that have been reissued in the CD era. If you love saxophone and smooth male vocals, I cannot recommend anything more highly than the CD "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman."

Happy birthday to a great guy, and I hope you can hang around more often!
-
Oh damn. Now I may have to buy this after all.

Well, since I bought a bigger CD wallet (wish I had a bigger wallet to buy more CDs) I can now lug a week's worth of CDs at a time. Back to Miles: Highlights of the Plugged Nickel Workin Someday My Prince Will Come at Carnegie Hall In Stockholm Complete Steve Davis: Portrait in Sound Dig Deep Vibe Up! Crossfire Wild Bill Davis: in Atlantic City Con Soul Sax Live at Basie's Walter Davis, Jr. Davis Cup In Walked Thelonious Joey DeFrancesco Relentless (with Danny Gatton) All in The Family (with Papa John DeFrancesco) "Papa" John DeFrancesco: Hip Cake Walk Buddy DeFranco: Bravura Blues Bag (the Vee Jay reissue, paired with the Louis Hayes date) Danny D'Imperio: 7 Sextet Big Bop Boviation Big Band Bloviation Blues for Philly Joe featuring Peter Mack Vic Dickenson Nice Work (the Vanguard comp.) Joyce Dicamillo Trio: Freelancin' (featuring Houston Person-funny thing is, I saw this used in Fort Lauderdale, didn't know the woman but $6 for Houston Person, how can you go wrong, right? So I sit down to listen and I'm reading the liners to learn more about the pianist, and I get to the end, and who wrote the liners? Sally White, owner of Sally's Place in Westport, Connecticut, my favorite record store in the whole wide world! Hurricane Charlie a Catagory 4!!!!

Not that I'm aware of, but I suspect that the park the boys played at in October is gonna be mighty trashed by this time tomorrow. Had no idea the storm had strengthened so incredibly rapidly. The only good news I heard from a relative in St. Pete was that it looked like it might come ashore south of Tampa/St. Pete, which would keep the worst quadrant of the storm away from the densely populated sea front. But wherever it comes ashore, its gonna be ugly. -
Speaking of Velveeta, will anyone fess up to trying that yummy-looking recipe for cheesy salsa (you know, the one on the commercial they run when football season starts up)? Is it any good?

Its nice to see you here, Soul Stream, even though it took this sad occasion to bring you back.

Giant ant colony storms across Australia

Yeah, those are pretty nasty sounding, but at least they're not aggressive unless disturbed. Jim's Fire Ants will sting you at the drop of a hat. And they're pretty painful, too, which makes me wonder just how bad this ant is, if "Their stings are the most painful and debilitating known for any insect". -

A tip o the trousers to bentsy and the babe thread. (deletion at the moderator's discretion) I'll give you a dollar if you make it your avatar. -
Lon, its Steven Wright. *********************** And the winner is .... John Heffron. I for one was definitely disappointed. I thought Alonzo's wit was far superior. I noticed one of the non-finalists say something about Heffron's "energy level" but frankly I don't need comics running around the stage, doing judo chops and making noises into the mic. Give me a guy who just straight out tells funny jokes. But I do think this was a big step forward for him and we'll definitely see more of him.

I remember there being a trading website

I had it in my Favorites; last time I looked it was no more, so I deleted it. -
Couldn't vote til I got home to count, but the numbers are decidedly middling (in this crowd): 20 Box Sets 2 Selects Burns of two OOP sets acquired from friendly patrons of this here board.

As Brownie says above, I don't think this guy wants it to be resolved. Definitely a screw or two or three loose, if you ask me!

Folks, Mailings at the beginning of next week will be difficult for me. Therefore, all discs will be shipped Friday morning. I don't think this will interfere with Marcus' BFT as he is closer and closer to posting answers, and since my BFT is two discs, people need more time to live with it before the discussions can start anyway. Thanks to all who have signed up, I hope the music and the theme are intriguing. We'll see soon enough.

Street Singer is in, but I have no contact from Tooter.

I would therefore second my vote for Stanley Turrentine Wildly innovative? No (so?). But I can pick him out every time, just takes a note or two (or three). I agree with you, Eric! Dmitry-your idea is a good one, maybe with a little twist: "Artists who's tones aren't that distinctive but we love them anyway"
-
I hesitate to point out that I asked for "single most recognizable tone". Who is the absolute schitt for you when it comes to recognizable tone?
-
Musicians are supposed to work for years on developing their own sound as well as their own conception. Some truly succeed, but a lot (IMO) fail, often because they are too enthralled with idols (a lot of Bird clones come to mind here-really, even if Stitt did develop independently, how easy is it to distinguish his tone from Parker's?) So my question is, who have/had the absolute most recognizable "sound" on their instrument? Who could you recognize in the fewest notes? It occurs to me that Miles might be it for fewest notes; my other choice would be Dexter Gordon, but you'd have to hear a phrase before realizing its Dex, with Miles, you might recognize him in even fewer notes.

Anyone else watching this show? There are definite similarities between this and Idol, but I think the overall talent level is much higher, and the entertainment factor is much greater. Some real talent among the contenders, and at least there's greater variation in approach to the craft, as opposed to the melisma infected "singing" on Idol. I didn't watch the whole season, but I have to say that Alonzo Bodden is a terrific talent and should definitely win the vote. I also had a soft spot for the cro-magnon dude, Jay London. And the Sicilian girl was easy on the eyes. Not sure if she was funny or not, I just noticed she was easy on the eyes.

Tooter, again, no email received.

Sounds good to me. I'm ready to ship at a "Moment's Notice" as it were.

Tooter, Not a problem, but I haven't received an email yet, so you might try again. dangould@hotmail.com

Not too long ago I got to this in my A-to-Z safari and its definitely a winner.

Thanks, Claude. Is it safe to assume though that at the worst case, if I borrowed an LP and burned at high speed, and it turned out my CD player had troubles, I could take that burn and re-burn at a lower speed? I mean, if the errors aren't on the disc but in the playback of the disc by certain machines, I assume I can always reburn from the master copy at a lower speed.
