  1. Thank you for this Wikipedia link. I note that it covers Schlager, but no sign of a reference to either free jazz or Muzak.
  2. What is "GDR Free Jazz"? Am I missing out on some classics?
  3. Soft Machine - Fifth (Columbia, 1972)
  4. Tete Mbambisa - Did You Tell Your Mother (The Sun, 1979) Dunno about the creepy title and artwork, but this has some good Basil Coetzee on.
  5. These look great. Do you recommend any in particular?
  6. I went a bit mad today and bought 8 records. I just kept walking into shops and finding new stock that I really wanted at good prices. I'm trying to cut my collection down, so this is a disaster.
  7. Hank Crawford and Jimmy McGriff - Soul Surivors (Fantasy, 1986)
  8. Schlippenbach Quartet - Hunting the Snake (1975/2000)
  9. Derek Bailey - Guitar, Drum 'n' Bass (Avant, 1995)

That sort of thinking is why I missed the recent Braxton standards set and Roscoe Mitchell's last visit. Just saying.

    What a shirt...
  12. Thank you for the info, and mentioning the album in the first place.
  13. Tom Rainey Obbligato - Untucked in Hannover (Intakt, 2021) First listen to this one. I had high expectations due to the players, but I thought it very disappointing: despite some good solos, I found it a bit too diffuse, serious and without much drive, which I think afflicts a lot of forward thinking modern jazz. Ha ha. Indeed.
  14. That is a beautiful cover. It's so good...
  15. Kenny Graham's Afro-Cubists Volume One - Mango Walk (Esquire, 1951-3) Nice one, which I don't own but listened to on the YouTubes after reading a reference to it in a blog. From the looks of it, it was a London bebop band, with West African percussionists, playing Afro-Cuban bebop. What I heard is very witty and really enjoyable.
  16. I had no idea that these were even available. So thank you.
  17. Thanks for the reminder. I need to get on that Mankunku
  18. Lots of chopped up samples of everything from vibes (Mwamba’s a reasonably-known vibes player on the British scene, not sure of what his worldwide presence is) to dulcimer and a Swiss exercise ball, recorded a home on a laptop. Very much of the “MySpace generation”. I’m not sure that it’s jazz, really, but it’s aged surprisingly well for what it is. It’s available to sample on his Bandcamp page, if you fancy a taste. It lists the wines he was drinking whilst making it. From the list, I’m afraid to say that the Rioja in question probably wasn’t Spain’s finest export.
  19. The Soul Jazzmen - Inhlupeko Distress (City Special, 1969) Duku Makasi on tenor, ahead of a piano trio led by Tete Mbambisa.
  20. Corey Mwamba - Sipping Rioja at Home (RICE, 2008) 2008 really was before the Instagram era...
  21. Gene Harris for sure. What about Jaki Byard and Don Pullen?
  22. Cannonball Adderley - The Price You Gotta Pay To Be Free (Capitol, 1970) There's so much cool stuff happening on this record. Nice! I'm going to listen to this next.
