Justin, what I appreciate is the knowledge that the players can hear you! In 1972, I attended a Red Sox game at Fenway. The Sox pitcher was Ray Culp. At one point, he stood still on the mound, lost in his own thoughts. I shouted, "Come on, Culp! Pitch the ball!" That startled him, and he promptly pitched as I had requested! I always enjoy paying homage to the great Sal the Barber Maglie (whose bubble gum card I had in 1959, and about whom Dizzy Dean would always say, "They didn't call him 'The Barber' for nothing."), and from time to time tell the pitcher, "Smoke him inside!" The batters always seem to hear that. I also recommend that you give the hitters advice, depending on the circumstances. For example, you can tell the batter, "Third base is playing too deep. Bunt down the line to keep him honest." If the batter does not take your advise and gets out (a 70% chance), you can then tell him, "I told you you should have bunted." Also, you should keep score, and remind the pitcher of what the batter did the last time he was up (ie, swung at an outside pitch). Have fun!

They began to explore jazz as teenagers in Tel Aviv, and have continued to play together over many years, with Yonathan making important contributions to Avishai's group albums Into The Silence and Cross My Palm With Silver on ECM. Their first duo album begins with music composed by the trumpeter and by the pianist and concludes with a touching interpretation of Israeli composer Alexander Argov's cradle song "Shir Eres". Along the way, Avishai and Yonathan improvise - freely, playfully, soulfully - on themes from jazz tradition. And, as the album titles implies, they also invite the recording space, the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI in Lugano, to be part of the sound, making full use of its resonant acoustic properties in a performance with the intimacy and focus of chamber music. On this album, recorded live at Rome's Auditorium Parco della Musica, the two masters lead a spirited quintet that includes lyrical pianist Giovanni Guidi, dynamic drummer Gerald Cleaver and virtuosic bassist Dezron Douglas (making his ECM debut here). The Guardian has praised the former Bad Plus pianist as "endlessly resourceful," while Time Out New York selected him as one of 25 essential New York jazz icons, describing Iverson as "perhaps NYC's most thoughtful and passionate student of jazz tradition - the most admirable sort of artist-scholar."
