And when said improvisers are also kindred spirits who know and can anticipate each other's moves, a kind of wonderful telepathy takes over. Such was the case when enigmatic Japanese noise legend Merzbow (Masami Akita) got together in the studio with fellow countryman Keiji Haino and Hungarian drummer Balazs Pandi for Become The Discovered, Not The Discoverer. For their second encounter for RareNoiseRecords, following 2016's An Untroublesome Defencelessnes, the three intrepid improvisers explore a threshold of sound so blisteringly intense, that it passes into a zone of divine cacophony. Comprised of four lengthy, uninterrupted suites, each containing dense, sometimes harsh sonic onslaughts, BecomeThe Discovered, Not The Discoverer is fueled by Merzbow's cathartic sheets of electronic sound and guitar, Haino's slashing guitar, bass and vocal work and Pandi's pummeling intensity on the kit. And as Pandi explains, "It was 100% improvised, nothing added in post-production, just like every time we record together. No limitations, no concepts, nothing. Just listening, and playing." Merzbow has found a true kindred spirit in Pandi, who has also become a kind of 'house drummer' for RareNoise. "The chemistry between us was there right from the very beginning," says Pandi, who began collaborating with Merzbow in 2009. "My way of playing fits his music perfectly, as I play both improvised music that is changing shape all the time and heavy amplified music. We don't have things anchored, we just have a continuously expanding vocabulary and we pay attention to each other and find immediate hooks in each other's playing." The third member of this formidable triumvirate, singer-songwriter-guitarist Keiji Haino, had previously worked with Merzbow under the moniker Kikuri. "Keiji is like an infinite well of ideas," says Pandi. "It's incredible how he can push music and sounds into new directions. Sounds coming from him have way more qualities than the ones coming from most musicians, as he uses every possible way to alternate sounds and give them extra qualities that people just don't know about." For Pandi, this latest is also the fifth recently RareNoise release involving both him and Merzbow, following 2013's Cuts (a trio with Swedish saxophonist Mats Gustafsson), 2015's Cuts of Guilt, Cuts Deeper (a quartet with Gustafson and skronk guitar hero and Sonic Youth founder Thurston Moore), 2018's live Cuts Up, Cuts Out (a quartet again with Gustafsson, and Moore) and 2016's An Untroublesome Defencelessnes (as aforementioned, with Haino). And for the powerhouse drummer, the thrill is definitely not gone. "It's been almost 10 years since I first played together with Masami as a duo," he says. "That was a string of four shows, and even on that tour there was a difference between the first and the last gig. So its obvious that we continue to do different things, and our relationship on a human and an artistic level also strengthened throughout the years. For obvious reasons we can't play too many shows. In a busy year, we have about a handful of shows, but it's always exciting to play and we always discover new things within our music. Masami never uses the same setup twice, and I always do my best to have something new to drop on him every time we play together." As far as the particularly intense nature of this latest invocation in the studio with Merzbow and Haino, the drummer says, "All we do is listen and play. Wherever we go with the music, the moment takes us there. Even if we make a plan, we just go with whatever we feel like doing. Haino-san decided on the spot to use the bass guitar, an instrument he never played on previously on recordings, if ever. Also Masami plugged in a guitar he found in the studio, so for a part of this recording we were a rock trio. The only thing we talked about the night before was to do five to seven-minute takes, but then the first take we actually did was over one hour." While Masami and Haino strike such a seamless blend with their electronic onslaughts, Pandi fuels the proceedings with his signature skills, drawing on the power of grindcore and death metal while also listening intently and reacting in the moment. "I just play whatever feels good to play," he says. "It's funny that even though I try to not play in tempo anymore and approach drumming more as coloring to give the music another texture, this one turned out more like a classic rock record. And at some parts I am even playing a backbeat kind of thing. So it's definitely more straight-forward drumming than what I usually play these days." "I basically grew up with playing and being surrounded by all kinds of music.", continues Pandi, "Back then it was Morricone scores, Verdi, Bill Haley & The Comets. One day I would play Dead Kennedy songs with my high school punk band, the next morning I would play "Slavonic Dance No. 8" by Dvorak on tympani. And still today, I have varied music tastes. So whether I'm playing with Merzbow, Obake or Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, it's all music to me." Like the music itself, the titles of Pandi's latest outing with Merzbow and Haino - "Become the discovered, not the discoverer" and "I want to learn how to feel everything in each single breath"- are intriguing. "The titles came from Haino-san and are inspired by the music," the drummer explains. "The titles, just like the music doesn't need to be understood, or doesn't need a strict interpretation." BIOGRAPHIES Born in Chiba, Japan on May 3, 1952, Keiji Haino has been active on Japan's underground music scene since the 1970s and remains active at age 67, ever-exploring on the fringes. His main instruments of choice have been guitar and vocals. Known for intensely cathartic sound explorations, he has lent his distinctive voice to recordings by a variety of groups, including Vajra (with underground folk singer Kan Mikami and drummer Toshiaki Ishizuka), Knead (with the avant-prog outfit Ruins) and Sanhedolin (with Yoshida Tatsuya of Ruins and Mitsuru Nasuno of Korekyojinn, Altered States and Ground Zero). He has also collaborated with such artists as Derek Bailey, Peter Brötzmann, Loren Mazzacane Connors, Charles Gayle, Makigami Koichi, Jim O'Rourke, Yamantaka Eye, Fred Frith, Charles Hayward and John Butcher. He also appeared on John Zorn's 1993 album Painkillerwith bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Mick Harris. Haino's initial artistic outlet was theatre, inspired by the radical writings of Antonin Artaud. He had his musical epiphany after hearing The Doors' "When The Music's Over" and immediately changed course towards music. After brief stints in a number of blues and experimental outfits, he formed the improvised rock band Lost Aaraaf in 1970. By the mid 1970s, he collaborated with psychedelic multi-instrumentalist Magical Power Mako and in 1978 formed the rock duo Fushitsusha. The lineup expanded to a trio and continued to perform, with shifting personnel, through the 1990s. In 1998, Haino formed Aihiyo, which performed covers of tunes by The Rolling Stones, The Ronettes and the Jimi Hendrix Experience, filtered through his ownunique garage-psychedeliaprism. In recent years, Haino has made some of his most profoundly intense musical statements in the company of fellow countryman Merzbow and Hungarian drummer Pandi. Merzbow's onslaughts of sound employ the use of distortion, feedback and noises from synthesizers, machinery, and home-made noisemakers. Utilizing two laptops, four stomp boxes and a homemade sound-maker, he creates a world of sound ranging from ambient drones to fusillades of frightening intensity. One of the most recognizable figures on the international noise scene, he began his recording career in 1980 with Fuckexerciseand Rembrandt Assemblage. He followed in 1982 with his landmark recording, Solonoise, which incorporated tape loops and creatively recorded percussion and metal. He has since released over 400 recordings, collaborating with dozens of musicians, contributing tracks to compilations and making numerous guest appearances on recordings by other artists. His stage name Merzbow comes from the German dada artist Kurt Schwitters' artwork Merzbau, in which Schwitters transformed the interior of his house using found objects. Born in Tokyo on December 19, 1956, Akita listened to psychedelic music, progressive rock and free jazz in his youth. He became the drummer of various high school bands and shortly after began playing improvised rock at studio jam sessions with high school friend Kiyoshi Mizutani. A graduate of Tamagawa University, where he majored in Painting & Art Theory, Akita commenced work as an editor of several magazines upon getting his degree. He subsequently became a freelance writer for several books and magazines and has written several books of his own on a variety of subjects, including music, modern art and underground culture. His other interests include painting, photography, filmmaking and Butoh dance. He has cited a wide range of influences on his own music, from progressive rock, heavy metal, free jazz, and early electronic music to non-musical influences like dadaism, surrealism and fetish culture. His 2010 project, 13 Japanese Birds, was a 15-album series highlighting his ongoing ecological and vegetarian activism. The youngest member of this powerhouse improvising trio is drummer Balázs Pándi. Born on August 6, 1983 in Budapest, Hungary, he has worked and toured with various acts from all around the world including Venetian Snares, Otto von Schirach, Last Step, To Live and Shave in L.A., The Blood of Heroes, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble and the Italian experimental instrumental group Zu. His current projects include Italian doom band Obake, Metallic Taste of Blood (featuring Colin Edwin of Porcupine Tree, Eraldo Bernocchi of Obake and RareNoise Records' resident keyboardist, Jamie Saft), Slobber Pup (with Saft, guitarist Joe Morris and bassist Trevor Dunn)and the black metal/punk band Wormskull. From 2012, he started to play solo shows at festivals under his own name. Since 2009, he has frequently played drums live with Merzbow, headlining at experimental music festivals around the world. Pandi's muscular drumming style, marked by high-speed churning, intense blast-beats and thunderous double bass drum pedals, has been informed by free jazz, breakcore, doom metal and noise. It's always pedal to the metal with Pandi. Together these three intrepid explorers and noise renegades arrive at some intense, harsh and ultimately compelling on BecomeThe Discovered, Not The Discoverer, their latest RareNoise release. New York, September 4, 2019 - From the Homeric invocation of ethereal opener "Atom Story," it becomes stunningly clear that It's Morning, the latest album from the uncategorizable UK ensemble Led Bib, is meant to take the listener on a journey. The wide-ranging and evocative set is also a testament to the distance the band has travelled on its own evolutionary path. If not the endpoint, it at least sits at a far-flung guidepost along a transformative odyssey undertaken by the eclectic ensemble. Led Bib has long been renowned for its skronky, livewire fusion of exploratory jazz improvisation with the brute force of heavy rock and the labyrinthine architecture of prog. It's Morning retains an identifiable sense of adventure and virtuosity while marking a vast departure from previous recordings, veering into the realm of elusive, poetic narrative and lysergic beauty. "Led Bib has developed an identifiable improvisation language over the last 15 years," explains drummer and bandleader Mark Holub. "After all that time we started to wonder what it might be like to take that language into a whole new area." The most immediately apparent change from past Led Bib outings is the addition of vocals, folding the band's boundary-stretching vocabulary into gorgeous if complex song forms. The band's core line-up - Holub, bassist Liran Donin, saxophonists Chris Williams and Pete Grogan, and new keyboardist Elliot Galvin - are joined by a pair of gifted vocalists: Sharron Fortnam, a co-founder of the North Sea Radio Orchestra whose intoxicating mezzo soprano has also graced recordings by the noted British prog-punk band Cardiacs; and Jack Hues, best known as frontman for the 80s new wave band Wang Chung. Bookended by a pair of atmospheric miniatures that frame the album as an imaginative Odyssey, It's Morning embarks on an immersive quest over psychedelic seas. That sense will only be amplified in live performances, when the music will be supplemented by a concert length film created by filmmaker Dylan Pecora. Pecora has made a film which explores and expands upon the album and in live performances it will be manipulated by VJ Oli Chilton. "I want our shows to feel like [author Ken Kesey's] Acid Tests," Holub declares. "I'm hoping people are transported somewhere else. The experience of just sitting down and being quiet and engrossed in something for an hour is a meaningful thing." In a very real sense, It's Morning is a reaction to the turbulence of the modern day, from the cautious optimism of its title to the otherworldly sensation of its music. Holub tentatively refers to the set as "protest music" - not that there's a single lyric that directly addresses the politics of the day, but in the sense, which has always characterized Led Bib's output, that the band is swimming against the currents of the mainstream. In retrospect, Holub finds the roots of It's Morning in his formative listening to bands like Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead. The influence isn't literal; there's nothing on the album that directly echoes the work of Jerry Garcia or Syd Barrett. What Holub learned from those bands is a sense of what he reluctantly terms authenticity, the idea of following one's own instincts however far afield they may lead. As unified and flowing as the end results may sound, It's Morning was created with as much spontaneity and in-the-moment invention as any of Led Bib's music. While they were intent on a new direction, the sound of the new album arose organically in the studio from the raw materials that had been shared between the bulk of the band in England and Holub in his adopted home of Vienna. Add to that the addition of Galvin, who stepped in when regular Led Bib pianist Toby McLaren was forced to withdraw from the sessions. The mystical "Atom Story" leads into the distorted urban groove of "Stratford East," with Hues' lyric conjuring past civilizations paved over by concrete slabs, wistfully recalled as the violin of Irene Kepl leads the band into a combination of Afrobeat funk and quirky angular melodies reminiscent of Deerhoof and its ilk. Modern life intrudes in the brief interlude of the title track, with Fortnam's lament over the ubiquitous digital screen accompanied by the moaning bass clarinet of Susanna Gartmayer. By far the album's most sprawling piece, the 11-minute "Fold" implores listeners to "Change the storyline" following a cosmic group improvisation redolent with the interstellar questing of the Floyd's most outré excursions. The pulsating minimalism of "Cutting Room Floor" accompanies Hues' instructions to "Let the film run backwards," giving perspective a 180-degree twist. Sense itself becomes lost as the two vocalists mutter simultaneously in stereo, a device recalling the Velvet Underground's brain-splitting classic "The Murder Mystery." The intimacy of a cloud-shrouded cityscape is summoned in Fortnam's introspective lyric for "To Dry in the Rain," which builds from hushed contemplation to explosive intensity before fading back into Galvin's elegiac solo, which segues into the vox humanathrob of "O." The abstract clamour of "Flood Warning" finally gives way to the closing moments of "Set Sail," which casts its gaze to future wanderings on the far horizon. While a definite departure for the band, It's Morning is more the exception than the rule in being an unexpected turn for the always unpredictable Led Bib. The band was originally formed by the New Jersey-born Holub in 2003 for a masters project at Middlesex University. The five-piece played its first gig in front of ten people in the backroom of a North London pub; five years later they were performing on primetime TV to millions, having been nominated for a Mercury Prize. In 2011 the group released Bring Your Own, followed by two releases to celebrate their 10th anniversary in 2014: the studio album The People in Your Neighbourhoodand the limited-edition live vinyl The Good Egg, both hailed as modern classics and their best yet. The program is emblematic of the range of repertoire the Norwegian saxophonist and British vocal quartet explored together- from Pérotin, Hildegard von Bingen, Guillaume le Rouge, Antoine Brumel to Komitas, Arvo Pärt and more. It could be said that the Hilliard/Garbarek combination, in concert, transcended its source materials, with early music, contemporary composition and improvisation interfused in the responsive acoustics of sacred spaces. And this final album reminds us that the unique Garbarek/Hilliard combination, and its unprecedented exploration of sound, was consistently breathtaking.

On her last CD, Out of the Past, Jazz & Noir, she presented a program of songs that were associated with some of the most popular movies of the Film Noir era. Her prior project, Experiment, was a tribute to Irene Kral, who was known for her subtle and emotive interpretation of ballads. On White’s newest CD, LIFE IN THE MODERN WORLD, White presents a collection of newer tunes and re-imagined standards that are most assuredly off the beaten track. From fresh takes on songs by Lionel Hampton, Ella Fitzgerald, and Hoagy Carmichael to contemporary writers like Mark Winkler, Kathryn Bostic, and Ron Boustead, White uses her warm, smoky voice and crystal clear diction to tell stories with nuance and refinement. Besides being an accomplished singer, White has also found considerable success as a producer on the hit HBO show Homeland. Despite her very busy schedule, music and performing have always been central to her life. A regular in many clubs in Los Angeles, including Catalina Bar & Grill, the legendary Cinegrill and the Bel Age Hotel, she’s also performed at Pangea, the Metropolitan Room, and the Triad in New York City. White spends a lot time travelling between the coasts and is accompanied on this CD by some of the top players on both the Los Angeles and New York jazz scenes. Musicians include KEVIN AXT and DAVID FINCK on bass, MARVIN “SMITTY” SMITH and CHRIS WABICH on drums, KEVIN WINARD on drums & percussion, GRANT GEISSMAN on guitar, ALEX BUDMAN on horns, FRANCISCO TORRES on trombone, TATUM GREENBLATT and MICHAEL STEVER on trumpet. But the core of her work on this project is the collaborative relationships she has with pianist QUINN JOHNSON and producer/vocalist/lyricist MARK WINKLER. Johnson was the music director/pianist for Steve Tyrell for 16 years. He’s worked with some of the top names in jazz and pop including Tom Scott, Poncho Sanchez, Flora Purim, Rod Stewart, Diana Ross, and Rita Coolidge, among many others. He also accompanied White and wrote the arrangements for her Experiment album. Winkler is a mainstay on the Southern California jazz scene. With 16 CDs as a leader and over 250 of his songs performed or recorded by such artists as Dianne Reeves, Jane Monheit, Bob Dorough, and Liza Minnelli, he’s also become a go-to producer for many Los Angeles-area jazz vocalists. Winkler produced White’s Out of the Past, Jazz & Noir project, as well. “This is the first time I’ve worked with both Mark and Quinn on the same project,” says White. “I love Quinn’s arrangements and especially his engaging solos. Our musical tastes are really in sync. And Mark brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the studio. He’s a terrific and incredibly supportive vocal producer. Working with the two of them together has been a dream.” White opens the album with the title tune, “Life in the Modern World,” composed by Ivan Lins with lyrics by Brock Walsh. The song was originally performed by the Crusaders, and although it is rarely performed, White became familiar with it through a video of British vocalist Norma Winstone. “Signing Off” is another lesser-known treasure that White discovered listening to music on her iPhone while travelling across the country. The song is a lovely ballad that first appeared on Ella Fitzgerald’s 1961 album Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie! Ella also wrote the lyrics. White tackles some better-known standards, like “How Little We Know,” which was written for the 1944 film “To Have and Have Not,” by Hoagy Carmichael and Johnny Mercer. The song was originally sung by Lauren Bacall with Hoagy Carmichael on piano. Johnson spices up the tune with a cha-cha arrangement. “Midnight Sun” by Lionel Hampton and Johnny Mercer is a standard that has been a favorite of many jazz singers. Winkler thought it would be interesting to mix things up a bit and asked Eli Brueggemann, who is the musical director for “Saturday Night Live,” to write the arrangement. White’s vocals float and slide over the funky rhythmic arrangement. Living in Los Angeles gives White access to some of the most musically creative people in the country, and she included three songs by local songwriters on this disc. She sings a duet with Winkler on a swinging version of “Till I Get It Right.” The song was composed by pianist Stuart Elster with lyrics by Winkler. “Coffee” is a tune by Ken Kresge and Ron Boustead. White likes the song because of its real Los Angeles café feel. Boustead is also a vocalist, and White first heard the tune at Boustead’s CD release show for his latest project. “Slow Down” was written and arranged by Kathryn Bostic, who is a composer, singer and songwriter, known for her work on film, TV and live theater. She is a recipient of many fellowships and awards including the prestigious Sundance Time Warner Fellowship, among others. The tune features a fun, funky three horn arrangement. The album closes with Paul Simon’s “American Tune.” Written in the 1970s, White chose to end the CD with this song because of its relevance today. She was surprised to learn that Johnson had never heard the tune before, but she felt that was an advantage, because he updated it with a fresh, new arrangement. With songs from just about every decade from the 1940s until today, LIFE IN THE MODERN WORLD, with its hip, new arrangements, is certainly a project for our modern times. In both of her careers, White is first and foremost a storyteller. Musically, she tells her stories with the warmth and maturity that come directly from the heart. There’s new love that is exciting and gives you butterflies (Before We Fall in Love), the crush that we have all experienced (Secret Love), the selfish side of love (You Turned the Tables on Me) and of course, the downside of trying love again and it not working (Didn’t We). There’s the joy of watching a child grow up (Waltz for Debby) and loving someone so much and realizing there’s not enough hours in the day to spend together (Some Other Time). Finally, there is the love of self and knowing that who you are is just who you should be (Bein’ Green). With so many songs out there, I had to go on the hunt to find the songs that spoke to my heart and told the stories that I wanted to tell - the ups and downs of it all, as well as the side roads and trails that this funny thing called love can take. Once again, to my mentor and friend Jeff Clayton, here’s a big thank you for teaching me and guiding me and showing me what I can strive for. A giant thank you and group hug to my wonderful musicians – Brenden Lowe, Joe Gilman, Buca Necak and Jeff Minnieweather. Night after night and show after show, you gentleman hold me up and let me go to so many places inside of the music and I love you for it. VIDEO MEDLEY --------- Jazz vocalist and recording artist Vivian Lee is truly a child of the world having grown up in a military family, then pursuing a twenty year military career herself. She specializes in the standards – Gershwin, Ellington, Berlin, Mercer, Jobim, and the like, with a little Brubeck, Gillespie and Monk thrown in. Her main venues have been the cabaret/supper clubs and nightclubs such as 7-Mile House in San Francisco, Piatti, Headhunters, Harlow’s, and JB’s Lounge in Sacramento, Tsakopoulos Galleria,and Three Stages Theater in Folsom. She has also been a mainstay at the Sacramento Music Festival. Ms Lee has played with such notable musicians as bassists Bill Douglass and Buca Necak, drummers Ed Thigpen and Eddie Marshall, pianist Joe Gilman trumpeters Al Molina and Dave Bengdekeit, and alto saxophonist Jeff Clayton. She has assembled a top notch ensemble of players from the area. Her current band consists of Joe Gilman or Brenden Lowe on piano,Buca Necak on bass and Jeff Minnieweather on drums. Together with her unique style, phrasing and magical stage presence, they have been captivating audiences from Lake Tahoe to the Bay area. Known for her story-telling and banter with the audience she will pull you into the world that she creates on stage. As a recording artist she has released three CDs - her 2000 debut CD, “Scarlett”, 2002 release, “Where is Love”, and 2004 “Have You Met Miss Lee?” all of which have made the rounds of national public radio jazz stations. She released her fourth CD – From Miss Lee To You in March 2013. The 2007 SAMMIE (Sacramento area music awards) award winning Miss Lee is also an active promoter of jazz in the Sacramento area in contacting and arranging venues in the Sacramento area to create a budding jazz scene. Ms Lee has three times (2005, 2006, 2007) been voted one of Sacramento’s top jazz groups and top local entertainer by subscribers in Sacramento Magazine’s annual “Best Of Sacramento issue and is the 2009 Sacramento Magazine editor’s pick as “Best Jazz Diva”. In 2014 the Black Music Association of America Sacramento Chapter inducted Ms Lee into the Hall of Fame as a Music Icon and also selected her as Jazz Vocalist of the Year for 2014.

Shrdlu, I've read the opposite in liner notes and such: 1) Monk was mad at Weinstock for some reason related to his time with Prestige. Coltrane was under contract to Prestige, and Weinstock had just as much right to record the pair as Keepnews had. He suggested to Keepnews that they alternate labels, and let Riverside go first. Monk refused to do anything more for Prestige. Johnny Griffin and Lockjaw Davis had the same arrangement with the two labels, didn't they? 2) Weinstock in no way hindered Miles recording for Columbia because he knew that would boost his own sales. He merely required Miles to fulfill his contract. -

"Paradise" 4. "So Emotional" - featuring Lalah Hathaway 5. "Give It Up" Miles Davis shocked the music world in 1985 when he left Columbia Records after 30 years to join Warner Bros. Records. In October of that year, he began recording the album Rubberband in Los Angeles at Ameraycan Studios with producers Randy Hall and Zane Giles. The musical direction Davis was taking during the sessions marked a radical departure, with the inclusion of funk and soul grooves; with plans to feature guest vocalists Al Jarreau and Chaka Khan. Eventually, the album was shelved and Davis went on to record Tutu, leaving the Rubberband songs unheard and untouched for over 30 years. Rhino is set to release the entire 11-song Rubberband album on September 6 on CD, digitally, and as a 180-gram 2-LP set. It was finished by the original producers Hall and Giles; with Davis' nephew, Vince Wilburn, Jr., who played drums on the original sessions for the album in 1985-86. Richie Cole/ Tony Monaco "The Keys Of Cool" Format(s): Jazz Richie Cole/Tony Monaco The Keys Of Cool (Richie Cole Presents) The great bebop altoist Richie Cole has been undergoing a renaissance in his career ever since moving to Pittsburgh a few years ago. He originally started playing alto when he was ten, attended Berklee, gained experience working with the big bands of Buddy Rich and Lionel Hampton, and became well known in the 1970s with his Alto Madness concept. The idea was that he could turn any song, even unlikely pop tunes, into swinging bebop. Beyond his mastery of his horn and the bebop vocabulary, Cole’s enthusiastic and chance taking solos made him a major force in the comeback of acoustic jazz. His recent string of fine recordings shows that he is still very much in his playing prime. Cole had only recorded with organists on four prior occasions (1977’s Movin’ Up with Don Patterson, a 1996 album by organist Sam Salomone, 1998’s Come Sunday which had pianist Joe Bonner doubling on organ and keyboardist Brian Trainor’s Why Try To Change Me Now which included organist Joel Bryant) but he and Tony Monaco are a perfect match. Monaco took up the organ when he was 12, inspired by Jimmy Smith. He began leading albums in 2001 and has since been one of the major jazz organists. The co-leaders blend together well, take complementary solos, and consistently inspire each other. Guitarist Mark Lucas also takes many inventive and catchy solos throughout The Keys Of Cool with drummer-producer Reid Hoyson and Noel Quintana keeping the music swinging and grooving. The quintet sounds like a regularly working band even though chances are that this particular grouping of musicians had not happened before. The Keys Of Cool includes a variety of standards including an infectious “Canadian Sunset,” “I Wish You Love” (which is taken at a perfect medium-slow tempo), “Our Day Will Come,” and a joyful version of “Sunday In New York.” Joy is one of the key adjectives in describing the performances on this set for it is obvious that the musicians love performing this music. Other selections include Monaco’s “I Remember Jimmy” (based on “Confirmation”), Cole’s exuberant waltz “No Longer Alone,” remakes of the altoist’s “Trenton Makes, The World Takes” and “Waltz For A Rainy Bebop Afternoon,” and Monaco’s funky “Indonesian Nights.” Add in Cole’s “Starburst” and a hard-swinging version of “It’s Not Unusual,” and one has a very satisfying and fun set. Montreal Pianist Andrés Vial To Release "Gang of Three," Modern Jazz Piano Trio Album of Original Compositions With South American & African Influences Vial's 5th Studio Album as Leader Features Bassist Dezron Douglas & Drummer Eric McPherson Digital & Physical Release by Chromatic Audio Records Set for October 4 CD Release Show, Friday, October 4 Upstairs Jazz Club (Montreal OFF Jazz Festival) August 26, 2019 Gang of Three, the stunning new album of originals by Montreal pianist Andrés Vial (pronounced Vee-al) and his fifth as a leader, was written over a two-year period marked by major life events -- becoming a first-time father, and returning to university to complete a Master's degree in jazz piano. It will be released October 4 on the Chromatic Audio label. Described as "a crisp, inventive pianist" (Stuart Broomer, The WholeNote) who "eschews the obvious to dig a little deeper" (Mike Greenblatt, The Aquarian Weekly), Vial received critical acclaim internationally for his 2018 Thelonious Monk tribute album, Sphereology Volume One, featuring guitarist Peter Bernstein. For Gang of Three, Vial reunited withbassist Dezron Douglas (who also appeared on Sphereology Volume One) and collaborated for the first time with drummer Eric McPherson. Vial was "inspired by the deep musicality and in-the-moment risk-taking that Eric and Dez brought to the music. These cats never play a song the same way twice!" The title track is a tribute to the friendship of three bebop piano icons -- Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, and Elmo Hope. After naming the song, however, Vial began thinking about the different trios in his own life: "I love playing in a piano trio precisely because of the magic that can happen between a pianist, bassist, and drummer in that setting," says Vial. "And now that my wife and I have a son, I live with my very own gang of three!" "Chacarera para Wayne" finds the pianist simultaneously revisiting his roots with a folkloric Argentinian rhythm and paying tribute to Wayne Shorter. "After I wrote the piece," says Vial, "I realized that the pedal point harmony and dark, sparse melodic theme showed the compositional influence of Wayne Shorter, so it made sense to dedicate it to him." Other highlights include "Ferguson," a 12/8 gospel ballad inspired by Jason 'Blackbird' Selman's poem "Ferguson/St. Louis Blues"; and "Montaigne," which employs an off-kilter samba funk groove and unusual chord colors that echo dualities and paradoxes discussed in the works of the16th-century French philosopher for whom the song is named. "Put Your Spikes In" draws inspiration from Central African Gbaya mbira music, while "Samba Fantasma" is named for a friendly ghost known to reside in the concert hall where Vial rehearses. Andrés Vial was born January 25, 1979, in Montreal. His father was an amateur classical pianist and as early as he can remember Andrés was sitting at the piano improvising little songs, beginning piano lessons shortly thereafter. He also learned from the classical, Latin, and pop records that he heard around the house, until the day when he was 11 that his mother came home with a copy of John Coltrane's Blue Train. "I was just floored," he says. "That was the record that really changed the course of my life, and I was obsessed with it for years to come." He joined his middle school and high school jazz bands and also began playing drums and vibraphone. Andrés studied jazz drums and classical percussion at a college in Montreal, before transferring to the New School in New York and completing a degree in jazz piano. Among his teachers were Bill Charlap, Hal Galper, Joe Chambers, and Buster Williams. After graduation, Vial returned to his hometown, where he recorded his first three albums:Trio/Septet (2007) featuring Malika Tirolien (Bokante, Snarky Puppy), The Infinite Field(2011), and conception/oblivion (2015). In 2018, he released the critically acclaimed Andrés Vial Plays Thelonious Monk:Sphereology Volume One, a quartet outing featuring Peter Bernstein, Dezron Douglas, Rodney Green, Martin Heslop, and André White. Tor Hammerø (Nettavisen) described Vial as "a brilliant Monk interpreter and pianist." And Scott Yanow (The New York City Jazz Record) wrote that "the high musicianship and obvious affection for the songs make Sphereology Volume One a worthy effort." Although he has been working steadily on the next Sphereology volumes, Vial didn't want to interrupt the documentation process of his own development as a composer -- hence the arrival of Gang of Three. "I'm looking forward to playing gigs with Dezron and Eric," he says, "and delving deeper into this material. We're just at the beginning of working as a trio together."
