  2. Gabriel Alegría Afro-Peruvian Sextet's "10" Scheduled for Audiophile Vinyl Release By Saponegro Records June 24 The Band's 5th Album Celebrates Their 10th Anniversary Release Shows Set for June 17, Club Bonafide, New York City & June 26, Pittsburgh Jazz Live International Festival May 6, 2016 The release last year of 10, on ZOHO Music, marked a decade of musical innovation by Gabriel Alegria's Afro-Peruvian Sextet, its program richly infused with Alegría's trademark synthesis of folkloric Afro-Peruvian rhythms, jazz, and other musical strains. Now Alegría's Saponegro Records is preparing to release an audiophile vinyl edition of 10 on June 24 -- the first such record in the history of Afro-Peruvian music. "We wanted to create a product that would stand the test of time," says Alegría. "Equal attention, love, and care were placed on both the artistic and technical aspects of the work." The resolution of the recording process was maintained at 88.2kHz at 24 bits (rather than 96k) for reasons that included simple integer-ratio sample rate conversion in order to avoid the phase shifts and "ringing" of anti-alias filtering at 20kHz. It also meant less data to be moved around as compared to 96kHz. Julio Ortega, the Peruvian mixing engineer, felt that this sampling rate offered the best option for capturing the heart and soul of Afro-Peruvian music. Specifically, the sound of Afro-Peruvian percussion instruments, which are made entirely from wood (no skins), made it necessary to find a sampling rate and bit depth that would capture their great profundity. The Peruvian cajón, which in the hands of Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón includes a great dynamic range and varied accents, posed a challenge not only of sound, but of the "space" surrounding its sound, including the spontaneous shouts and calls known as guapeo. "For all of these reasons, it was imperative to maintain the entire project at high resolution," says Ortega. "One of the keys was to capture the 60Hz and 40Hz frequencies of the cajón without having them confused with those of the double bass or kick drum. With the 88.2kHz sampling rate at 24 bits, we made the most use of the physical space that contained the instruments during the recording. Further, in order to avoid problems of distortion with future plug-ins, such as those found in Universal Audio, it was important to keep the internal DAW process at 32 bits. All of this in preparation for the move to vinyl." The end result is a 33-RPM vinyl that was duplicated under the highest standards by Morphius Records onto 180-gram audiophile quality vinyl. "In order to meet the demands of 'air space' of the music," says Ortega, "we needed to take full advantage of the available bandwidth and so it is possible to hear the 'movement' created by each instrument, as it should be, where the cajón lays the sonic foundation of heartfelt interpretations by masterful artists." 10 is a concept album showcasing carefully chosen American and Peruvian standards arranged in the Afro-Peruvian style. Guest artists including bass legend Ron Carter, Grammy Award-winning pianist Arturo O'Farrill, Yellowjackets keyboardist Russell Ferrante, and tabla expert and Miles Davis alumnus Badal Roy augment the sextet, half of whose players are based in Alegría's native Lima and half in New York City. "We've brought together jazz musicians with eminent Peruvian musicians, and we're the glue that holds it together," says Alegría. Freddy "Huevito" Lobatón, a founding member of the sextet, is a master of Afro-Peruvian percussion who grounds the band in the folkloric textures of the box-like cajón, the cajita, and the quijada (made from the jaw bone of an ass). Drummer Hugo Alcázar, also a founding member, incorporates the cajón into his drum kit's polyrhythmic feel, while American-born drummer Shirazette Tinnin gracefully navigates the predominantly 12/8 beats. Alegría shares the front line with tenor saxophonist Laura Andrea Leguía, a tremendously expressive player who helped found the band. Peruvian criollo guitarist Yuri Juárez provides expertly calibrated rhythmic support and telegraphic solos. In New York, bass duties are shared by two veteran masters, Puerto Rican-born John Benitez and Nigerian-American Essiet Essiet. Born (1970) and raised in Lima, Perú, Gabriel Alegria has divided his time between Perú and the United States throughout his life. After receiving his bachelor's degree at Kenyon College in Ohio, Alegría enrolled at City College of New York and earned an M.A. under the tutelage of Ron Carter. He then returned to Perú for seven years, five of them spent in the trumpet section of the Lima Philharmonic while moonlighting as a jazz and rock musician around the capital city. He relocated to Los Angeles and spent four and a half years at the University of Southern California, where the Afro-Peruvian Sextet first came together in 2005. While at USC (he earned his doctorate in 2007), Alegría studied, worked, toured, and recorded with his mentor Bobby Shew, vocalist Tierney Sutton, trombonist Bill Watrous, and keyboardist/composer Russell Ferrante -- all of whom contributed to the sextet's debut CD, Nuevo Mundo (Saponegro Records, 2008). The band released three more albums on Saponegro -- Pucusana (2010), El Secreto del Jazz Afroperuano (2012), and Ciudad de Los Reyes (2013) -- in its crusade "to spread Afro-Peruvian jazz music to the world," says the trumpeter. Gabriel Alegría and his Afro-Peruvian Sextet will be performing album release shows 6/17 at Club Bonafide, New York City, and 6/26 at the Pittsburgh Live Jazz International Festival. This energetic band, led by the trumpeter and composer Gabriel Alegría -- has made a mission out of highlighting those affinities." --Nate Chinen, New York Times "Alegría and his crew deliver rhythm-saturated, orchestrally-enticing performances that are the definition of sonic joy." --Mark Holston, Latino Magazine "Trumpeter Alegría's resourceful band of Peruvians and New Yorkers (Newyoruvians?) continue to meld Latin and North American traditions. Their stimulating fifth album alternates between the continents and blends musics, including an intriguing combination of 'Take Five' and 'El Condor Pasa.'" --Doug Ramsey, Rifftides "One of the most adventurous sets of music that you are likely to be delightfully assaulted by anytime this year." --Raul da Gama, Latin Jazz Net **** "A disc to be loved by progressives and block-party dancers alike." --Jeff Potter, Down Beat Web Site: afroperuviansextet.com Follow: Like: View:

  12. For those who care, this was all related to the famous Baltimore Terrapins case. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baltimore_Terrapins In the days before radio, the Supreme Court ruled that baseball was not interstate commerce. Sixty years later, everyone knew better, and the basketball people did not enjoy an exemption from anti-trust laws. It was illegal for the four ABA teams to abandon those not admitted to the NBA.

  16. BRAZILIAN VOCAL JAZZ LEGEND LENY ANDRADE AND GUITARIST RONI BEN-HUR REUNITE FOR A WEEK-LONG NYC PERFORMANCE AT BIRDLAND MAY 10 - 14 DUO RELEASED A CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED CD, ALEGRIA DE VIVER, ON MOTEMA IN 2015 "Leny is one of the greatest improvisers in the world. I love the way she sings. She is an original!" Tony Bennett LENY ANDRADE AND RONI BEN-HUR at BIRDLAND MAY 10 - 14 CRITICAL RAVES FOR ALEGRIA DE VIVER "End-to-end it is a flawlessly beautiful alliance..." Jazz Times "Both artists allow the music to evolve with a wonderful feeling of spaciousness in which the intense musical textures of these pieces are beautifully revealed." Latin Jazz Network "One of the most solid and consistent releases of the year." Bop-N-Jazz "...a delightfully sultry recording that will transport you..." The Celebrity Cafe "Clearly a winner throughout." Midwest Record Latin Grammy winner Leny Andrade, acknowledged as Brazil's one true jazz singer, will once again join with the celebrated NY-based guitarist Roni Ben-Hur, this time for a week of performances at Birdland, from May 10 through 14. Last year, the two combined their considerable musical forces on a stunning duo CD, Alegria de Viver (Motema Music,) on which they delivered an intimate set of Brazilian classics including songs by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Pixinguinha, Dori Caymmi, and Johnny Alf. In its review of the album, Jazz Times raved, "End-to-end it is a flawlessly beautiful alliance..." In a departure from the duo format of Alegria de Viver, at Birdland Andrade and Ben-Hur will perform with Itaiguara Brandao on bass and Andrade's long-time drummer Helio Schiavo. The show is a production of "BossaBrasil at Birdland," produced by impresario Pat Philips. Andrade's voice is a deep, husky instrument of such dramatic depth that, as Stephen Holden wrote in the New York Times, it "seems to well up from the center of the earth." She blends jazz with samba, bossa nova, and bolero; her improvisational brilliance and vocal fireworks have led many writers to compare her to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Both singers were among her fans, as were Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, and Antonio Carlos Jobim. Roni Ben-Hur was born in Israel to a family that had migrated from Tunisia. Due to his eclectic background, he successfully combines classical Spanish repertoire with Brazilian music and jazz. On his five previous Motema albums, he recorded with such musical luminaries as Gene Bertoncini, Santi Debriano, and Nilson Matta. Mojave, Ben-Hur's 2011 release with bassist Matta, drummer Victor Lewis and percussionist Café, was praised by Bob-N-Jazz as "one of the most solid and consistent releases of the year." His two previous albums, Keepin' It Open and Fortuna, were also critically well-received, earning Ben-Hur praise from the Newark Star Ledger, whose Zan Stewart wrote, "A storyteller, Ben-Hur works with a warm, glowing sound and has an alluring way of combining engaging notes with supple rhythm," and Time Out NY, who called him a "formidable and consummately lyrical guitarist."
  17. Hot Tone Music to Release New CDs By Bassist Mimi Jones & Pianist Luis Perdomo May 13 Perdomo's "Montage," His First Solo Piano Session, Is a Follow-Up to 2015's "Twenty-Two" "Feet in the Mud," Jones's Third CD for the Label, Is a Quartet Date Featuring Jon Cowherd, Jonathan Barber, Samir Zarif "Montage" CD Release Show June 1 The Jazz Standard, New York City April 25, 2016 Hot Tone Music, the artist-run label founded by bassist /composer Mimi Jones in 2009, announces the simultaneous release on May 13 of new CDs by Jones (Feet in the Mud) and pianist/composer Luis Perdomo (Montage). Perdomo's Montage is his eighth album as a leader but the first solo piano recording in his distinguished career. After he'd begun playing solo concerts three years ago, this ever-evolving artist reached out to his pianist friend Fred Hersch "to fine-tune some aspects of my own solo playing." Of Montage, he says, "I felt the time was right for me to do it, and I felt ready to take on the challenge. I always loved the flexibility and freedom of being able to take the music in different directions." Repertoire on the new CD is an intriguingly personal mix of favorite jazz and Songbook standards ("Monk's Dream," "Body and Soul," Stanley Cowell's "Cal Massey"), studio improvisations, and songs from his Caracas childhood that left an indelible impression on him ("Mambo Mongo," "La Revuelta de Don Fulgencio," the bolero "Si Te Contara"). While Montage offers ample evidence of Perdomo's musical mastery, the pianist claims that he wanted the music "to serve as a soundtrack for everyday life. You don't have to go to Carnegie Hall and put on a suit to listen to this music." For her third Hot Tone Music album, Feet in the Mud, Mimi Jones called on an "amazing crew" consisting of her frequent drummer Jonathan Barber as well as new colleagues Jon Cowherd on piano and Fender Rhodes and soprano saxophonist Samir Zarif. They provide the perfect support for the leader's deeply satisfying bass lines and haunting vocals, which are anchored in the jazz tradition yet stylistically elastic enough to encompass other genres. The CD, says Jones, is "a tribute to those who have left a huge imprint on me and the world, as well as those who are still alive and making an imprint as we speak. It's also about finding true joy within yourself, having an open mind and spirit and a connection to the earth." Jones's originals (among them "Lyman's Place," the buoyant "Elevate," and the appealing opening track "Mr. Poo Poo") reflect these themes and concerns; the program also includes Wayne Shorter's "Fall," Enoch Smith Jr.'s arrangement of "Blackbird," and "Feet in the Mud," composed by Perdomo. Born in New York City (in 1972) and raised in the Bronx, Mimi Jones attended Fiorello LaGuardia High School and earned a B.A. in music at the Manhattan School of Music Conservatory. She missed her graduation, however, because she'd been hired to tour Japan with saxophonist Masa Wada and drummer Denis Charles. It was the first of numerous overseas tours that would take her to Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, some under the auspices of the U.S. State Department. In addition to leading her own groups, Jones has worked with jazz artists including Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen, Terri Lyne Carrington (who chose Jones to play on her Grammy-winning The Mosaic Project), Ravi Coltrane, Lizz Wright, Toshi Reagon, Roy Hargrove, and many more. She has previously recorded two albums as leader -- A New Day (2009) and Balance (2014), both for Hot Tone Music. Luis Perdomo was born (1971) and raised in Caracas, Venezuela, where he received an excellent music education from his father's vast LP collection and his teacher Gerry Weil. He was awarded a scholarship to the Manhattan School of Music and studied there with Harold Danko and Martha Pestalozzi, earning his B.A. in 1997; three years later he received his master's at Queens College after study with Sir Roland Hanna. Perdomo became a first-class sideman, recording and/or touring with Dave Douglas, Tom Harrell, Steve Turre, and many other jazz and Latin artists. He was a member of Ravi Coltrane's Quartet for ten years, and is a founding member of the Miguel Zenon Quartet. Among his recordings as a leader are Focus Point (2005), Pathways (2008), Universal Mind (2012), and his 2015 Hot Tone Music debut, Twenty-Two, featuring his Controlling Ear Unit with Mimi Jones and drummer Rudy Royston. Perdomo and Jones, who have been a couple for the last 12-plus years, frequently work together, both on the stage and in the studio. "I was afraid for the longest time of having my wife in my band," says the pianist. "What if we have a fight, and if affects the music? But actually she knows what influences me, what I like and don't like -- and she's a solid bass player." On Wednesday 6/1, Luis Perdomo will perform a CD release show for Montage at the Jazz Standard, NYC, with special guest The Controlling Ear Unit (Luis Perdomo, p; Mimi Jones, b/voc; Rudy Royston, d). Other Perdomo dates include: 7/25-7/31 Langnau (Switzerland) Jazz Nights; 10/21 Café Tra le rigge, San Severo, Italy; 10/29 Jazzkeller Esslingen (Germany). The Mimi Jones Band will be appearing 5/7 at Casita Maria Center for the Arts in the Bronx (3:00-3:45 pm, free/outdoors), with a New York City CD release show soon to be announced. Other dates include 7/9 at the Lighthouse Jazz Festival, Michigan City, IN; 7/11 Arts Incubator, Chicago; 9/6 Jazz Showcase, Chicago; and 9/10 IRock Jazz Festival, Holland, MI. A Japanese tour is set for 10/5-17, and a European tour for November. 18. Happy Birthday 2016 Steve!
  19. Andando el Tiempo features new music of wide emotional compass by NEA Jazz Master Carla Bley, and underlines her originality and resourcefulness as a jazz composer. “Saints Alive!” sets up animated conversations between the three musical participants with striking statements from Steve Swallow’s bass guitar and Andy Sheppard’s soprano sax. The stately “Naked Bridges/Diving Brides” draws inspiration from Mendelssohn and the poetry of Paul Haines. And the powerful three part title composition – which addresses the trials and tribulations of recovery from addiction - moves through sorrow to hopefulness and joy. The trio with Sheppard and Swallow has been an ideal vehicle for Carla’s writing for more than 20 years and also provides one of the best contexts for her unique piano playing. Like the critically lauded ECM album Trios (2012), Andando el Tiempo was recorded at Lugano’s RSI Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher. ©2016 ECM | 1755 Broadway, Floor 3, New York, NY 10019
