  1. I had forgotten about the Golden Throats compilation. I never heard it, but I remember that it looked scary! As I recall, it had Jack Webb singing Try a Little Tenderness, and Shatner doing Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. Oh, the humanity! As I recall, Rhino put out a Volume 2 as well.
  2. I remember seeing a show about Bob Newhart on PBS many years ago. On it there was a film clip of a time Ralph Edwards dropped by, and started his intro into This Is Your Life. Pleshette naturally took a step back to allow Newhart to enjoy the spotlight, only to discover to her horror that Ralph was there to see her and not him!
  3. Thanks Evan! I thought everyone knew that Shatner cut a famous album.
  4. The NY Times has had a paywall in Canada for a couple of weeks. I have read that you can beat it by either disconnecting (if that's the word) your Java, or by clicking on the Page Source in your browser's View dropdown. The first day the Times put up the paywall in Canada, a guy figured out how to beat it during his lunch hour!
  5. Here's an article that speculates that William Shatner may be a billionaire because he has been paid in stock for his work in the Priceline commercials! http://briansullivan.blogs.foxbusiness.com/2011/03/29/william-shatner-stock-market-billionaire?test=faces
  6. The Ticats have released Kyries Hebert. That's a big surprise to me. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=359983
  7. Noj, I think it's hard to have a trial system of justice if people don't take perjury seriously.
  8. I enjoyed The Long Goodbye as a movie, but not as an adaptation of a Chandler work. I enjoyed very much both Robert Mitchum Chandler movies. I also enjoyed the few HBO Chandlers that I saw (can't remember the star's name), and would like to see the rest. Maybe they're on DVD. PS - A search at Amazon shows me that it was Powers Booth, and that all eleven episodes are available on DVD. On to my wish list!
  9. Happy Birthday 2011 jlh!
  10. In '97 or '98 my nephew attended a Diana Krall concert in Los Angeles. Johnny Mandel sat down next to him and introduced himself!
  11. Thanks mjzee! I've added it to my wishlist. When I was a senior in college I had the pleasure of meeting Casals briefly and shaking his hand. He was very nice, but said little. His wife was quite charming.
  12. LOL! Apparently Dave has me on his ignore list!
  13. alankin is in the house! Welcome back, Alan!
  14. There's a good article today at the LA Times website about a 600 foot homer that Mickey Mantle hit, whose landing was witnessed by Frank Gifford who was practicing football at the time. http://www.latimes.com/sports/ http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-0326-mickey-mantle-20110326,0,5398006.story
  15. Seeing jostber's suggestion of a Mulligan on Limelight reminds me that I have another of his Limelight albums called Something Borrowed, Something Blue with Zoot Sims. I don't think that that has ever been relased as an album on CD, and I enjoy it very much. I'd be curious to hear all of Mulligan's work on Limelight. I also have one Chet Baker Limelight album called Baby Breeze. If he did anything else for that label, I'd be curious to hear it as well.
  16. A high school classmate of mine, Hank Graham, has made the Associated Press! (For those who don't care about me and my classmates, this is about the teams' ticket prices.) http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/four-nfl-teams-alter-season-ticket-plans-because-of-lockout/article1956982/
  17. Break a leg, Randy! Where's Sylvania?
  18. I recently received a promo of a new album I think many here will like called Latin Bird by alto saxophonist TK Blue. It is bebop played over latin polyrhythms. There are eleven tracks, eight of which are Charlie Parker songs. Blue has been a member of Randy Weston's band since 1980, and is now its musical director. This date's band consists of sax, piano, bass, drums and percussion, with Lewis Nash and Steve Turre making guest appearances. The cd is on the Motema label, which I had never heard of a year ago, but entered my consciousness last year with releases by Gregory Porter and Geri Allen; so maybe Motema is becoming the next Mack Avenue. Blue will play in New York at the Iridium April 13, and at Twins in Washington May 20-21.
  19. A Cleveland season ticket holder has sued the Browns and the league on the grounds that the lockout breaches the contract terms of his personal seat license. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/browns-fan-sues-nfl-and-teams-over-lockout/article1956570/
  20. Over the years there have been some Mosaic sets now long out of print whose music has (for the most part) not been released on CD. In addition to the fact that many people don't have the money to buy seven full price CDs at a time very often, I believe that there is today more appreciation for some of the music than there was when Mosaic issued their boxes. So I would suggest music from the following Mosaic boxes: Maynard Ferguson Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Charles Brown Thelonious Monk Black Lion Count Basie Roulette Gerald Wilson Tal Farlow Johnny Smith Dinah Washington Johnny Richards
  21. I was pretty confident that my home state of Louisiana would come in #1, so I was surprised to see that somebody beat it. That so many are the humid states comes as no surprise. I am surprised that Nevada but not Arizona made the list. I would think that they would go together.
  22. Here's a Reuters article that suggests that if the NFL doesn't play this year, it will be an opportunity for the CFL and the UFL to get American tv exposure. Personally, I think that most NFL fans would prefer to watch college ball. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/News/2011/03/24/17736166.html ***** The NFL has proposed extending the season to 18 games. Here are comments from Doug Flutie and Danny McManus about that. It should be remembered that when Flutie played in the USFL, that was just a couple of months after his college career ended, so no wonder he was tired. By the way, the picture of Flutie is from a game I attended, the 1996 Grey Cup. Great game in the snow in Hamilton! http://bostonherald.com/sports/football/other_nfl/view.bg?articleid=1325541
  23. Happy Birthday 2011 nathan!
  24. I can say the same, except I was in my forties, and the movie was Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. RIP, Liz. We'll miss you. I'm waiting for Allen to make an appearance and say, Now she'll be reunited forever with the great love of her life, Eddie Fisher.
