I believe I recall seeing her sing Downtown on the Ed Sullivan Show. I can only imagine what Strangers in the Night sounded like! -
Thanks Chris! I had pictured in my mind the tape recorder to be upright. I guess that shows how little I know!

Phineas Newborn, Jr. I had always pronounced Phineas with a short i, as in Phineas T. Bluster. But yesterday I heard Rhonda Hamilton on Sirius pronounce it with a long i. She is married to Michael Carvin, and she mentioned that she had once met Newborn, so I suppose she ought to know. Anybody certain?

Oldies big success in UK due to TV advertising
GA Russell replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I also saw Cliff Bennett and the Rebel Rousers sing one song on Shindig, and was very impressed. I never saw a record of theirs in the stores, and I never heard a song of theirs on the radio. -
When my car's CD player blew out, I bought a new one with a Sirius receiver. Believe it or not, I have never used the CD player. Rarely the radio. 99% Sirius.

Oldies big success in UK due to TV advertising
GA Russell replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Sounds Incorporated! They were a favorite of mine. I saw them on Shindig (a US TV show from '64 to early '66). I spent the summer of '67 in Europe (mostly Spain), and during my three days in London I bought both of their albums. Great memories, MG! -
Here's an interesting two-page article fom The Times of London about the selling of oldies CDs in Britain via television commericals. The CDs are making the Top Ten over there. Maybe MG, Sidewinder and the other Brits know all about this. http://entertainment.timesonline.co.uk/tol...icle4121943.ece

The Bombers cut Troy Westwood today. Some guys are just unable to retire with dignity. Well, he had a great career. http://www.globesports.com/servlet/story/R...tsFootball/home

Very sorry to read this. I enjoy Strange Place for Snow. I picked it up from BMG after reading about it at AAJ. I thought that its music was different from the sort of thing BMG normally carries, but perhaps their carrying it was due to Sony/Columbia's marketing of it.

I remember once reading that Barney Kessel would frequently argue that whatever it was that Django played, it wasn't jazz. But the article I am referring to didn't mention what it is/was about jazz that Kessel felt that Django did not incorporate. If we are going to limit the discussion to Europeans who did not relocate to the USA, how about Francy Boland?

My favorite sports announcer has died. In 1961 I watched the San Diego Chargers games each week, and Charlie Jones was the play-by-play announcer for ABC. In 1965 when the AFL games moved to NBC, Jones and the other AFL announcers moved to NBC too. I liked Jones because he always sounded like he was glad to be there. He always thought that the game was exciting. Of course, with Sid Gillman coaching and Jackie Kemp throwing, the games were exciting! Here's his LA Times obituary: http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-...0,4069058.story Charlie Jones, 77; veteran sportscaster won an Emmy for documentary NBCMULTIFACETED: Charlie Jones, left, in 1989 with Merlin Olsen, one of his many broadcast analyst partners on pro football telecasts. In 1997, Jones received the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award. An author, he also won an Emmy for his work as writer, producer and host of the documentary “Is Winning the Name of the Game?” By Larry Stewart, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer June 14, 2008 Charlie Jones, a veteran sportscaster best known for his pro football play calling in a 38-year network career, died Thursday night at his home in La Jolla after suffering a heart attack. He was 77. Jones was getting dressed to go to dinner with friends at Torrey Pines Lodge when he was stricken, said his longtime agent, Martin Mandel. The U.S. Open is underway this week at Torrey Pines. The versatile Jones' first network assignment, on Sept. 10, 1960, was calling a game at the Coliseum between the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs of the old American Football League for ABC. Jones also contributed extensively to ABC's "Wide World of Sports" before switching to NBC in 1965 after that network picked up the AFL contract. He was a mainstay at NBC through the 1997 NFL season. "All of us at NBC are saddened at the passing of one of the great pioneers of NBC Sports," Dick Ebersol, chairman of NBC Sports, said Friday. "His work in particular on the NFL, golf and the Olympics left a lasting legacy." While at NBC, Jones announced 28 sports, including golf, Wimbledon tennis, baseball, figure skating and numerous events for the network's "SportsWorld." He called the track-and-field and diving events at the 1988 Seoul Olympics; swimming, diving and water polo at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics; and rowing, flat-water canoeing and kayaking at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. During his career, Jones worked more than 25 college football bowl games, including the 1987 Fiesta Bowl national championship game. He also announced the 1986 World Cup soccer tournament from Mexico City and the 1987 World Championships of Track and Field in Rome. Jones started his broadcasting career full time in 1956 as sports director at KNAC-TV in his hometown of Fort Smith, Ark. From 1957 to 1959, he held the same post with KFPW radio in Fort Smith. He became an announcer for the AFL's Dallas Texans in 1960. Jones provided the play-by-play on Cincinnati Reds baseball telecasts in 1973 and 1974, and for the Colorado Rockies from their first season in 1993 to 1995. In 1997, he was honored with the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award. Jones won a 1973 Emmy Award for his work as writer, producer and host of the documentary "Is Winning the Name of the Game?" He also wrote "What Makes Winners Win" (1997) and co-wrote a number of books with Kim Doren, including "You Go Girl! Winning the Woman's Way" (2000), "Be the Ball: A Golf Instruction Book for the Mind" (2000) and "Heaven Can Wait: Surviving Cancer" (2003). Jones had his own battle with prostate cancer, beginning in December 2001. He co-wrote, co-produced and co-hosted the award-winning PBS series "The American Frontier" with Merlin Olsen, one of his many broadcast analyst partners on pro football telecasts. Jones, who was born Nov. 9, 1930, in Fort Smith, attended USC and played tennis there. He served in the Air Force and earned a law degree at the University of Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Ann; a son, Chuck; a daughter, Julie; and three grandchildren. A celebration of Jones' life will be held Wednesday at the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club.

Teasing the Korean on WMNF's "Latino 54"

Calgary Stampeders 39....Edmonton Eskimos 14 http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Gam...5874346-cp.html ***** Saskatchewan Roughriders 33....British Columbia Lions 13 http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Gam...5874776-cp.html I always enjoy listening to the Riders games because they have a unique flavor - most of the sponsors are agricultural products, such as tractors and combines, the wheat pool and hybrid canola seed. Perhaps there are US college teams with similar situations but I am unaware of them. I imagine that many of the Sirius subscribers who heard last night's Sask broadcast got a kick out of that.

100 INESSENTIAL, but rather enjoyable, Jazz Albums
GA Russell replied to Hot Ptah's topic in Miscellaneous Music
HP, thanks for that effort! I'm surprised you listed Charles Mingus - Tijuana Moods. I gather that a great many critics consider it to be his best album. 5xMonkx5 was my second Monk album. I've always loved it. I think that it is a lot more popular than the others on your list. Now Soul Sauce is an example of what I think of as inessential recording but a great album nonetheless! -
Former Argos head coach John Rauch passed away Tuesday. His obituary is featured on the LA Times website because he had great success coaching the Oakland Raiders. http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-...,0,403627.story ***** The CFL exhibition season has begun tonight. I've been listening to the Ticats play the Bombers, and the Bombers are leading 8-6 at the half. I'll post the websites to listen to the games after I have checked them all out.
