Great! So 10 out of 20 have received the discs... hopefully discussion will kick in again in a couple of days!
-
OK, folks, here's the thread to discuss BFT 41, CD 2. Tomorrow it will have been one week since I sent out the packages, and the European recipients began to report before the week's end that they had received them. I'm thinking the North American, Russian, and Singaporean residents will have them in hand within the next couple of days if they don't have them already. Better early than late, so here goes! Roughly 75% of the items on the two discs are from bittorrent boots, so Dimeadozen addicts may have the upper hand. There's no special theme. There are two or three freebies, and a bunch of individual musicians whom I suspect will be quickly spotted; it may not be the most challenging BFT, but I hope you'll like the music and the way it flows. My only request is that if you know for certain what an item is, you don't spill the beans--link to AMG or something instead.

In my humblest of humble opinions, the answer to your question is no, there is no concise way to define those types of jazz. You could probably define 1, 2 and 5 in a non-concise way with plenty of footnotes, qualifications and open questions. 3 and 4, forget it. They're not types of jazz, they're just adjectives that each listener will apply with utter subjectivity.

Looks like Europe is receiving the packages this week. Maybe the States (and Singapore) will get them over the weekend. I'll probably open discussion Sunday or Monday.

And just in case that was a serious question--of course she's not too young to be doing things because she's upset with you! All actions have consequences, right? You piss her off by putting her on the naughty step, she's got motive. Give her the means and the opportunity and you have a case.

It's not a question of careful premeditation--the kind of behavior you're talking about is impulsive. Two-year-olds are curious and exploratory and enjoying their power to do things in the world and see the effects, and they're also too young to control their impulses very well. You've got your toy, there's the window screen, you suddenly have a strong desire to see how hard you can poke it and what might happen... and pow, you do it. You're not yet at the stage where you can foresee what's about to happen, weigh it against previous injunctions, even if they were only thirty seconds ago, and make decisions about what is best. It's just like... wow... I wanna... (crash rip smash scratch) hey! that was fun! Uh-oh, Daddy's upset! Now is the time to start discovering the deep wells of patience you never knew you had!

What does "soft" mean, precisely? I think Holland's quintet and big band are excellent. I don't feel the need to pick up every release because they mine much the same vein, but it's a rich vein. "Boring"? Maybe I'm just not so easily bored.

Part of Chronological Classics Catalog Back in Print!
Tom Storer replied to FrancoisD's topic in Re-issues
Thanks for the link, François. Now if only someone would resurrect the Masters of Jazz label... Their fabulous "Anthology of Jazz Drumming" series got up to Vol. 4 (of a planned 7) before they ground to a halt. A damn shame. -
All 19 packages went out in the mail this afternoon! Please post here when you've received yours, and once several have been received I'll start the discussion thread.
-
Oops! Make that 19.
-
We have 18 participants for BFT 41. I'm now at the envelope-stuffing stage and will get these mailed tomorrow. But it's not too late to sign up! Step right up!

It does sound interesting. And it sounds an awful lot, in concept, like an album James Newton did about twenty years ago, his own arrangements of Ellington tunes with an ensemble including Olu Dara and Arthur Blythe, if I remember correctly. I have that on vinyl in the basement. I wonder if that's been reissued?
-
That's kind of close to blasphemy, there! I mean, not everything Carter has done since has been immortal, but that Miles quintet without him? Not that I don't love Gomez, but they have such radically different sounds. I'm trying to imagine the Miles Quintet with Gomez... Damn. I wish I could shunt into an alternative universe and hear what that sounded like!

Wow. I guess the moral is that there is definitely a jazz zeitgeist--lots of people around the world exploring the same kinds of things at the same time. A very good and interesting pair of CDs, Luca, and refreshingly non-US-centric. Thank you!
-
Well said indeed! This is a very absorbing and insightful dialogue Mike and Jim just engaged in. Many thanks to both of you.
-
16 and counting! I'll probably send the packages this weekend.
-
Fair enough, it's clear this is something you've thought deeply about. But regardless, Jim, it's time to sign up for BFT 41. If you don't, I'll find your address and send it to you anyway, so you may as well just surrender now.

What I don't understand, and find creepy to the point of perversity (literally) is whatever it is that drives an individual to seemingly want to literally become somebody else, not in "spirit" but in exact detail. Maybe this is a semantic quibble, but regarding your reluctance to be on the same side of the street as Harry Allen: his apparent desire is not to "become somebody else" but to "sound like somebody else sounds." Is your musical identity the sum total of your identity? Allen might be able to sound just like Stan Getz in exact detail, but that ability/ambition/desire is only one aspect of himself, as indeed Stan Getz's sound--something he could do--was one aspect of Stan Getz the man.

Thanks, your Majesty! I'll try live up to your absurdly high expectations.

Discussion of BFT 40 has been open for over a week and hasn't been active in the last 48 hours or so, so I guess it's not too soon to launch the signup for number forty-one.
