I don't know, did they agree never to merge? Why would anyone really give a fuck if they did? end quote Well, you know, we could reverse all that consolidation rather than give in to it. Fact is, yes, they agreed they wouldn't merge in order to provide competition in the marketplace. They were allowed in with that caveat. So now that it didn't work out the fuckers should fold their tent and go home, not come crawling for a bail out. Fact is if our radio station goes under, la la la hey hey goodbye. Why not with them? They failed -- see ya, wouldn't want to be ya. The reason local radio stations care is because the radio equivilant of Wal Mart just opened down the street with more bells and whistles and a larger audience base with which to poach what business underwriting we're all trying to court. So, let's give a big warm hug to the brash corporate welfare recipient and a big f.u. to the local guy. "My country tis of thee, sweet land of...."

Leslie Johnson wrote: The Mississippi Rag, now in its 35th year as "The Voice of Traditional Jazz and Ragtime," is now free on its website, www.mississippirag.com, in a very user friendly format. The latest transformation of the RAG took place in January 2008. For the year prior to that, the RAG was online but in a PDF format available only to subscribers. Now it's free to anyone who logs onto www.mississippirag.com. Readers are encouraged to write to editor@mississippirag.com if they want to be notified each month when the new issue is available. Both the latest change and the previous change (from a printed tabloid which was mailed to 26 countries), were precipitated by the need to lessen the workload of editor/publisher Leslie Johnson, who has been fighting a rare form of cancer since mid-2005. Until her editorials announced the various changes, many readers weren't aware that the RAG actually is produced by a one-person editorial staff (Leslie) with occasional help from her sister, Jody. Articles, reviews and columns are written by freelancers, not a resident staff. The health challenges, coupled with with increased printing prices, two-digit hikes in second-class postal rates and the elimination of surface mail to destinations outside the U.S., led to dropping the print RAG altogether, but the move to an online RAG allowed for extensive use of color and other innovative techniques. An online distributor was used for the PDF version of the RAG but isn't necessary anymore now that the RAG is free off its website.. The new free RAG includes many of the same kind of historical articles, festival coverage, interviews, photos, columns, and listings that were featured in both the printed and PDF-online RAGs. The look and feel of the previous RAGs has been retained, but, with the new web-based format, it's easier to read and print, thanks to the efforts of webmaster Jeff Holman and Dave Lindquist of Protype Design. Ad revenue is expected to cover the costs of producing the RAG. Each page includes ads which are hyperlinked to websites. The ads also can be enlarged to their own separate pages as a convenience for printing them out to make reservations for the various events. The response to the new RAG has been very positive, and traffic to the website has been heavy, with more than 6500 visitors checking out the January RAG within its first three weeks online -- good news for advertisers. (That issue is still available for viewing.) The February RAG was released Feb. 10, and 2500 visitors have already checked it out in just the first five days, so the RAG's future looks bright. `````` --end--

What an amazingly rich period in Coleman Hawkins's life: the Lionel Hampton Sessions in 39; the Body and Soul date; the Metronome (Esquire?) all star date including Basie, Goodman, Cootie Williams; his guest spot with Count Basie on "9:20 Special" and "Feedin' the Bean;" The Chocolate Dandies with Benny Carter; The Leonard Feather All Stars with Tatum; and then getting into 1943, just December alone...This is the focus tonight and takes in the Apollo date with Dizzy, the Capitol sides with Howard McGhee, Keynotes with Cozy Cole, Teddy Wilson, Buck Clayton; the Joe Davis sides with Monk, some JATP from '46...will end at 3 a.m. with Picasso. If you're up and around, Hawk! Part of Black History month on Jazz From Blue Lake, www.bluelake.org/radio.html

Not that everything needs to have a commercial purpose but his set up led me to believe he'd mention Healing Force: The Songs of Albert Ayler on Cuneiform that (from the CD), "pays tribute to the unfairly ignored, misunderstood and vilified late-period work of free jazz innovator Alber Ayler." Vinny Golia, Henry Kaiser, Mike Keneally, Joe Morris, Damon Smith and Weasel Walter with vocalist Aurora Josephson. That Ayler box set of a few years ago seemed to stir up interest in this period. Kaiser and Keneally did a good job with Leo Smith in Yo Miles, and are sort of undertaking a similar quest here, maybe? I don't know, but "Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe" is 20 minutes long on this one....

Don Cherry: The Relativity Suite
Lazaro Vega replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
No kidding -- L.D.! Was it two hours long at that concert and can you remember where it was stretched out or were there different sections excized from the record session? There's not a lot of "blowing" per se on the record.... -

Wish I could broadcast the 2 hour concert version of the Relativity Suite from WKCR, yet ethically.....can't. -

At 2 a.m. back to Don for an hour, including "Art Deco" with James Clay, "Lonely Woman" with Ornette, "The Blessing" with Trane, "Consequences" with the New York Contemporary Five and the second half of "Eternal Rhythm." www.bluelake.org/radio.html Thanks! What key is Black Codes in?

As Roy Campbell described Ayler during a live broadcast of Jazz From Blue Lake, "The alpha and the omega." From the most basic rural slave songs to the end of "regular" time in music... And, the AEC wasn't so obscure around these Great Lakes in their early period. Certainly internationally reknown at their height. edit to mention, first pot brownie in '07?

Yeah, Louis suffered a stroke two years ago. He's getting out more though still dealing with redeveloping his speech. Friends in Ann Arbor said he and his wife were in the crowd at Hill Auditorium recently for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's version of Ellington love songs. He was seen talking to friends and is otherwise on the mend. Great guy. His concert at Blue Lake in the 1980's, with the late pianist Eddie Russ, is still a favorite tape to pull out and enjoy.
