  3. What an amazingly rich period in Coleman Hawkins's life: the Lionel Hampton Sessions in 39; the Body and Soul date; the Metronome (Esquire?) all star date including Basie, Goodman, Cootie Williams; his guest spot with Count Basie on "9:20 Special" and "Feedin' the Bean;" The Chocolate Dandies with Benny Carter; The Leonard Feather All Stars with Tatum; and then getting into 1943, just December alone...This is the focus tonight and takes in the Apollo date with Dizzy, the Capitol sides with Howard McGhee, Keynotes with Cozy Cole, Teddy Wilson, Buck Clayton; the Joe Davis sides with Monk, some JATP from '46...will end at 3 a.m. with Picasso. If you're up and around, Hawk! Part of Black History month on Jazz From Blue Lake, www.bluelake.org/radio.html
  4. Not that everything needs to have a commercial purpose but his set up led me to believe he'd mention Healing Force: The Songs of Albert Ayler on Cuneiform that (from the CD), "pays tribute to the unfairly ignored, misunderstood and vilified late-period work of free jazz innovator Alber Ayler." Vinny Golia, Henry Kaiser, Mike Keneally, Joe Morris, Damon Smith and Weasel Walter with vocalist Aurora Josephson. That Ayler box set of a few years ago seemed to stir up interest in this period. Kaiser and Keneally did a good job with Leo Smith in Yo Miles, and are sort of undertaking a similar quest here, maybe? I don't know, but "Music Is the Healing Force of the Universe" is 20 minutes long on this one....
  5. No kidding -- L.D.! Was it two hours long at that concert and can you remember where it was stretched out or were there different sections excized from the record session? There's not a lot of "blowing" per se on the record....
  6. Wish I could broadcast the 2 hour concert version of the Relativity Suite from WKCR, yet ethically.....can't.
  7. Don Cherry and The Jazz Composers Orchestra recorded The Relativity Suite February 14, 1973. The recording airs tonight from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. est. After that, lovey dovey. At 2 a.m. back to Don for an hour, including "Art Deco" with James Clay, "Lonely Woman" with Ornette, "The Blessing" with Trane, "Consequences" with the New York Contemporary Five and the second half of "Eternal Rhythm." www.bluelake.org/radio.html Thanks! LV
  8. What key is Black Codes in?
  9. As Roy Campbell described Ayler during a live broadcast of Jazz From Blue Lake, "The alpha and the omega." From the most basic rural slave songs to the end of "regular" time in music... And, the AEC wasn't so obscure around these Great Lakes in their early period. Certainly internationally reknown at their height. edit to mention, first pot brownie in '07?
  10. Yeah, Louis suffered a stroke two years ago. He's getting out more though still dealing with redeveloping his speech. Friends in Ann Arbor said he and his wife were in the crowd at Hill Auditorium recently for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra's version of Ellington love songs. He was seen talking to friends and is otherwise on the mend. Great guy. His concert at Blue Lake in the 1980's, with the late pianist Eddie Russ, is still a favorite tape to pull out and enjoy.

  16. Does it matter, this attention to "the majors"? Benny Golson's one big clam of an album was made for Columbia; Arthur Blythe's music devolved while at that label, and Dexter's music recorded for Steeplechase or Black Lion rates with his best of Columbia, though the smaller labels are more likely to keep his music in print. Something to chew on. If it weren't for independants and the mavericks who run them jazz would be the swing era (in terms of records) and then scraps after that. The majors often just miss the boat on jazz. So maybe this list is more of an honor roll than some "lost to the masses" lament.
