  1. Steve and Ted--have used a lot of that material before when I hosted our jazz-and-popular-song program Afterglow. May tap into it for a future Night Lights show that is more full-on novelty-oriented. (And Ted, I agree with you re movie-vs-Decca version)
  2. Online just in time for Halloween... smoke dreams, sorcerers, stalking monsters, and strange exits: paranormal jazz encounters on this edition of Night Lights. Jazz Haunts For Halloween: Ghostly Songs And Mysterious Ends
  3. Favorite of mine as well, definitely an underrated big band. Another disc on which it's represented iirc:
  4. I think YOU should be a game commentator, my friend. Seriously!
  5. Happy birthday, sir!
  6. Last night's game = why I love baseball
  7. That's the magazine that Nelson Algren wrote his Chicago piece for in 1951. Editorial conflicts ensued, and Holiday published a sanitized version that Algren did not approve of; something closer to the original came out in book form as Chicago: City On The Make
  8. Have not seen any of his on-air work myself, but sounds as if Alex Rodriguez is doing a great job as a post-season post-game analyst for Fox: Alex Rodriguez the analyst
  9. Upping this thread for what would have been Frank Hewitt's 80th birthday today. The program is again available for online listening: Not Afraid To Live: Frank Hewitt
  10. A recent Night Lights show, featuring music from the first batch of Xanadu reissues and an interview with reissue producer Zev Feldman, is up for online listening: Return To Xanadu: Rebirth Of A Label At the bottom of the web post there's also some news from Zev about upcoming releases from Elemental Music and Resonance.
  11. Up for Mr. Konitz's 88th birthday today: Lee Konitz: The Verve Years
  12. Yes, quite a surprise, evidently even to the NY beat writers... nobody really saw this coming (the Toronto nightclub incident seemed like an aberration that could have happened to any player). He had been pitching much better lately too, ever since getting the brace put on his leg. The Yankees have been playing so badly that I don't expect them to make it far in the playoffs (hell, I'll be happy if they can just manage to beat the Astros in the WC faceoff), but if they do, they can muddle through to some extent with a Tanaka/Severino/Pineda/Warren rotation.
  13. I've been listening to this group lately myself and really enjoying it (the Philharmonie album, Blues Roots... just ordered Last Set At Newport). Scheduling a Night Lights show about them for sometime early next year. I like that recording also. There's another by this group that's quite good called Blues Roots--I don't think it has been reissued on CD though. Reissued on CD in Japan recently as part of the Jazz Collection 1000 series. Has Compadres ever made it out anywhere on CD?
  14. Yankees hobbling to the finish-line, quite possibly not even getting homefield advantage for the WC faceoff. Having to go to Houston would surely increase the odds of NY being a one-and-done team in the playoffs.
  15. Holland to undergo Tommy John surgery this Friday
  16. Jays are 41-14 since July 28. Anything can happen in a short series, etc., etc., but hard to bet against them at this point.
  17. Kari Gaffney reporting via Ted Panken on Facebook that Phil Woods has passed away.
  18. The Pink Fairies, "Tomorrow Never Knows"
  19. Lester , , , then James P. . . . good things ahead for we who wait. Is Lester first? When? As things stand now, the Johnson will be out first. I think Lon simply meant the order in which we've learned of these sets.
  20. Glad you liked what you've heard so far, RT! GA, it will be up indefinitely.
  21. A recent Night Lights show that delves into the mid-1960s recordings of artists such as the Free Spirits, Count's Rock Band, the Fourth Way, and Gary Burton is up for online listening: First Fusion: Jazz-Rock Before Bitches Brew The web post also includes links to some extended versions and outtakes from the show.
  22. I've posted some details on the Night Lights site.
  23. Would any Chick Corea tunes make the cut? "Spain" or "Windows"? I see Mulgrew Miller compositions popping up now from time on new releases. My friend Mitch Shiner is none too keen on the very kind of problematic repertoire snobbery that Jsngry describes. Here's his Santeria-flavored arrangement of Miley Cyrus' "Wrecking Ball" (with percussionist Michael Spiro also providing vocals): Wrecking Ball Oggun
  24. Look for this set to pop up cheap from time to time... I picked it up a few years ago when the Telarc boxes were showing up frequently at bargain prices: Erroll Garner Telarc box
  25. Harvey's on an innings limit because of his return from Tommy John surgery. Any chance the Yanks had at overtaking or even tying the Jays went down the tubes tonight, methinks. Their pitching has actually been pretty good of late, but the offense seems to go cold every other night. Sudden-death wild-card, here we come! But it's been a blast to see the two rookies (Bird and Severino) doing so well.
