This Friday night's Afterglow program took a look at Frank Sinatra's key transitional years with Tommy Dorsey at the beginning of the 1940s--lots of studio sides, plus some radio broadcasts (including FS's farewell performance with the band & a couple of reunion tracks from 1944) and two cuts from Sinatra's 1962 tribute album I Remember Tommy: When Sinatra Met Dorsey

I think that--as with the Four Freshmen--Mosaic will snag a fair # of buyers who don't normally patronize the company. I posted something about it on the Crosby Facebook page and the moderator responded with, "Hold tight till the official BCE (Bing Crosby Enterprises) announcement"...I'm sure it will be promoted widely outside of the normal Mosaic advertising range (they'll probably aim for a high-profile Wall Street Journal review from Friedwald, too, or something along those lines). I don't think Mosaic will have much trouble at all selling an initial run of 1000 copies during the holiday season.

Definitely discussion of this book way upstream the thread. I agree--I've probably read it (in toto) about three times now.

Found out yesterday that V. 2 is slated for autumn 2012 publication.

There was talk of Mosaic doing a Boswell set a few years back, but it didn't pan out--not sure if it was licensing issues or what. Berigan might know more about it.

No, that material won't be covered--I believe it's just Crosby and the Buddy Cole Trio, save for one session that includes Matty Matlock and some others.

I think it'll do pretty well too--especially if they're getting it out in time for the holidays.

I'll be getting it--I really like Crosby, and so far I haven't heard many post-WWII recordings of him in a small-group jazz setting.

Bummer--I was a fan & had hoped to read the novel he was supposedly working on a few years ago. I think I remember reading a comment from Lou Reed to the effect that Carroll and Lester Bangs were the two writers who best conveyed the spirit of rock 'n roll in their writings...RIP, JC.

Well, here's another one to warm your heart! A.J.'s troubles Frankly, Dan, as well as the Yanks have been playing, the starting rotation does have me concerned once you get past CC and Pettite. In addition to Burnett's generally woeful performances of late, Chamberlain seems to be a real question mark as well (though he pitched well the other night after a rocky start). I mean, sure, that's OK if you're scoring 8-10 runs every time out...but that obviously won't be the case against top-tier teams in the playoffs.

This MIT Press book looks really interesting (and haunting): Asylum: Inside the Closed World of State Mental Hospitals ...with a foreword by Oliver Sacks, an adaptation of which appears in the new NY Review of Books. The bulk of the book apparently consists of photographs that Christopher Payne took inside shut-down, abandoned state mental hospitals across the country. Here in Indiana I've always been drawn to the former state mental hospital in Madison (way down in the southeastern corner of the state, on some bluffs overlooking the Ohio River...the town, btw, where they filmed the movie version of SOME CAME RUNNING). It, too, is a beautiful but somewhat spooky place. I think it's still open as a facility, though I'm not sure it's associated with the state anymore.

after posting this yesterday I dropped Mosaic an email bemoaning their loss and asking in vain if there was a Patton set kicking about. I wondered if in the chaos, underestimates of stock held might have occurred. Well amazingly I got a reply this evening , Cindy had a copy of the Patton select for me :excited: .... enough said, I am amazed to have been so lucky. No harm in asking. Congratulations...you're making me want to go home and listen to that set! Really glad you got one, Clunky.
