  1. A very rough month indeed. Weirdly enough, I brought that Fathead Newman 32 Jazz set to work with me today... will spin it in lieu of Ray himself for now.
  2. Every city riots... it's a venerable American tradition! I was in one myself, Bloomington '87, when IU won the NCAA. Pretty friendly, though, as riots go--people were hugging cops, going "We won, we won!" The riot we had here several years ago when Knight was fired was a much less friendly affair.
  3. Haven't seen the film (will try to, upon your rec), but I must say that's one of the more eyecatching thread titles I've seen around these parts in awhile!
  4. How popular was the Vee Jay gospel material? I wish some of that would re-surface as well.
  5. From BMG's "buy 1, get 3 free" deal (crusing towards the magic mark of 18 music points): Count Basie, AT NEWPORT (VME) Louis Armstrong, MEETS OSCAR PETERSON Dexter Gordon, ROUND MIDNIGHT General Public, ALL THE RAGE (indulging college-sophomore-year memories)
  6. New to clearance: Hank Mobley, STRAIGHT NO FILTER ($2.99). Cassandra Wilson, NEW MOON DAUGHTER ($3.99). Sonny Rollins, COMP. PRESTIGE RECORDINGS ($27.99, but they will nail you on shipping--tack on $20 more. Still a good price overall, though.)
  7. DoubleM, PM'ed you re: the Tyner hold.
  8. Speaking of ES playing piano, here are some live solo recordings of him playing piano & singing: ESpiano From the 12.07.00 Club Quattro, Nagoya, Japan show.
  9. Still reading le Carre's SMILEY'S PEOPLE... also starting William Kenney's CHICAGO JAZZ: A CULTURAL HISTORY 1904-1930.
  10. This jazz-lovin' Christian liberal will miss you too, AB. Y'all come back now... ya hear?
  11. No further news on the album--as far as I know, it's still slated for autumn release. Speaking of autumn, here's a pic of Elliott from Autumn De Wilde's new website: More Elliott pictures by DeWilde (who shot the FIGURE 8 publicity photos) here. And there's an article on Elliott in the new music issue of The Believer, a wonderful literary/arts magazine.
  12. Still enjoying the Hackett (listened to most of the quartet sides last night) & really digging the Brookmeyer Select. Haven't cracked the New Orleans box yet--probably on Sunday afternoon (seems like a good time to listen to that genre).
  13. A tad rough but still a must-have for Elmo fans.
  14. Well, I'm just glad to see that it's your computer & not you that's on the fritz! I was about to start a "Where's Weizen?" thread...
  15. Thanks, Uncle Skid. I don't know if I'll have the time, but I'll let you know if I make my way down the road... Wasn't Aebersold part of the Lenox scene?
  16. Oh, man, that's sad. I have some vinyl of Reed's early 80's band (LIVE IN ITALY) w/Quine on guitar that's just great... He figures in most of the books I've read about the 70s NYC scene. Bummer.
  17. A wee bit of earlier discussion here.
  18. Man, Aebersold played here last week at Bear's Place & I couldn't make the gig because of work. Hope you guys have a great time!
  19. Jim, I've heard of him & will probably mention him in my IN jazz series, but have yet to hear his music. Here's an article that appeared in NUVO (Indpls. alterna-weekly) a couple of years ago:
  20. I'm still hoping to get out there again myself (was last in Seattle circa fall 1988, on my way back from working on a salmon processor, just on the eve of the Great Grunge Explosion). Do they still offer a tour of the underground city? And a big yes to the Olympic Peninsula. I hope to live there one day... preferably on the coastal part. Port Townsend, say...
  21. Thanks for posting this, Claude. I have a few of the Naxos classical CDs and can say only good things about the series; I'll definitely be checking out the website from now on.
  22. Don't worry, I'll make room. The War Room! Stocked with plenty of great jazz to listen to while assaulting the powers that be... Looking forward to the next Non Grata & Reptet projects.
  23. Congratulations, John! It took my wife & me 9 months to find our house in Bloomington, which is a considerably cheaper market than yours. We're still intending to get out to Port Townsend one of these days (do they still have the annual jazz festival there? Is Shank still a resident? I thought Catesta or somebody else mentioned that he'd moved to Arizona) and would love to hook up with you. Believe me, just the knowledge that your money is no longer going into the black hole of rental payments (well, at first a lot of it will be going into the black hole of interest payments) is a big relief--as is knowing that you're no longer at the mercy of a landlord who may, on a whim, "re-model" (usually not for the better) or up your rent outrageously.
  24. For God's sake, whatever you do, don't flatten their fifths!
  25. The Bud Shank/Bob Cooper Select (JAZZ AT CAL TECH, specifically). And this morning I was enjoying disc 1 of the Hackett.
