  1. We have LET MY CHILDREN HEAR MUSIC over at the station (sadly a title that I have yet to pick up for myself), so I'm adding "Chill of Death" to the mix. Thanks much, as always, for the recs.
  2. No, I'm not kidding about some hipsters being into him. Frankly I think it's a bit of the usual ersatz hip--"let's take some total kitsch and dig it"--but I know several people who've sung his praises in the past year or so. And then there's Upstairs at Larry's.
  3. It's actually been hip to like Welk for the past year or two... I never bought the ticket for that particular ride, though.
  4. No--I think they were the ones selling!
  5. PM'd you regarding the Stu Williamson.
  6. Geez, Berigan, I think the Politics forum got mentioned just a few times before I made my post... and if nastiness on this board is the topic, that particular forum and some of the proven LIES that were posted there that amounted to character assassination merits mentioning. (I'm sure you'd say they were about W. ) And this from a guy who used political signatures throughout all of 2004! Those showed up in every post you made on this board... so give me a break, eh?
  7. Hey all, I'm taping a Night Lights program devoted to Mingus' spoken-word collaborations (it will also include Mingus' "Freedom" piece, which CM read himself). I've got "Scenes From the City" with Melvin Stewart, "The Clown" with Jean Shepherd, and the half-LP with Langston Hughes... am I missing or overlooking anything?
  8. Berigan posting three Swift-Boat-Liar threads at once?
  9. Those who like the Wilson set might want to go back and check out his 1940s big-band on Chronological Classics. Not quite as many stellar soloists as those you find on the Mosaic set, but a very worthwhile ensemble nevertheless.
  10. Deletion news begins at the top of page 5. You'll then eventually see the mention on page 6 of the shadowy European sets of almost all of the Columbia material. This from Chuck Granata: Maybe the material will eventually see re-release in a less expensive form, as did the complete Reprise set. Ghost: Get the known-legitimate set NOW. I found a reasonably-priced copy and pulled the trigger. Huzzah! Really looking forward to spending some time with this set... I've wanted it for quite awhile now. Thanks again for the news that it had gone OOP.
  11. It's a wonderful set, all right... I even like the infamous Disc 5 (great version of Coltrane's "Equinox", among other things). And it's packed, too; 10 LPs put on 5 CDs.
  12. Some goofball from the assembly team was just quoted on All Things Considered as saying, "Putting this together was like organizing the invasion of Normandy..." Well, not quite, o clueless one!
  13. Coming up soon... hey, another stupid-questions thread and we'll be there in no time!
  14. Hey man, I'm a Eurobilly--lotsa West Virgina and southern Indiana mixed in with the Dutch and German stock.
  15. This week on Night Lights it's "Strictly Romantic," a program of jazz ballads for the forthcoming Valentine's Day holiday. We'll hear from John Coltrane ("While My Lady Sleeps"), Johnny Hartman ("But Beautiful" from his 1959 Roost album AND I THOUGHT ABOUT YOU), Nina Simone ("Since I Fell for You"), Miles Davis ("When I Fall in Love") and others. The program airs at 11 p.m. this Saturday night; you can listen to it live on the Internet, or in the Night Lights archives, where it will be posted Monday morning. Next week: "Meet the Jazztet," featuring selections from the recent Mosaic box. In two weeks: "Word From Mingus," featuring Charles Mingus' spoken-word collaborations with Langston Hughes, Jean Shepherd, and others.
  16. The Oscar Brown program has been archived.
  17. Is there anything out there besides Joel Whitburn's books on pop hits from 1940-1954? I realize the whole business of determining "hits" was rife with rigging, inaccuracy, etc., but would still like to find some sort of reference resource.
  18. Looks like a fascinating set! How many more volumes will there be?
  19. This threatens to become the momma of all threads.
  20. No... this isn't the gig I'm talking about. There's a Half Note broadcast from two days earlier: Is that session on the Coltrane-list tree? In any case, I hope this set streets for real this time around.
  21. Whatchoo say about my mama?!
  22. I thought she always said, "Don't play ball in the house."
  23. AMG says 1928, but that means absolutely nothing IMO.
  24. Yep--they just tagged it in the billboard for All Things Considered.
  25. A HISTORY OF JIMMY SMITH--2-LP Verve set.
