Thanks for the heads-up on this one, Shrdlu. It was on my wish-list, but your post expedited action on my part--it's now on its way from the Man in Japan, aka Mr. Tanno. What a great guy he is! He evidently visits this site from time to time, although he's not a member.

Haven't seen you around these parts for a few weeks, but hope all's well. Come back & re-join the sub-Organissimo group of underground 80's pop lovers! Then we can all invoke Paul Westerberg "Here Comes a Regular" references, etc. Happy birthday!

The Holidays..............
ghost of miles replied to Free For All's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I hear ya... I'm going to be digging out from more than just snow for the next three months. -
Any chance that fellow board members will be able to listen to this online? pryan, yeah, sure. I don't know yet whether it will be airing on our public radio station or our community radio station. I'd prefer to do it on the public one, but I don't know if we'll be able to squeeze it in or not. I'm trying to line up David Baker for an interview, but I don't know if it will happen or not--he's an extremely busy guy, but I know he'd like to do it if he can find the time. J.J. was sort of a mentor to him. In any case, it will probably air around his birthday, either Jan. 21 or 22, and I will post the link here. Just got ACROSS 110TH STREET in the mail yesterday, which will give me something to represent J.J.'s film/TV years. Started reading a Christmas present last night: SECRET AGENT X-9, a 1991 compendium of the 1934 comic strip that Dashiell Hammett authored. A fascinating moment in the career of the man who wrote THE MALTESE FALCON.

Lee Konitz live at Storyville 1954
ghost of miles replied to slide_advantage_redoux's topic in Artists
I like this Konitz quite a lot. Slide, if you enjoy the 1201 series, be sure to keep an eye on Daedelus' music page, as the 1201s sometimes show up there for $5-6.99. I've picked up several titles there, including the Konitz, Ben Webster, and Ayler. -
Should we start calling him "Sir Moose?" Happy birthday from one Hammett/jazz fan to another. Hope you're having a great day, spinning BEAUTY IS A RARE THING or whatever else you're up to. Hopefully it's not work in any form, shape, or manner!

It sure is. A friend of mine insisted that I listen to this record, finally dubbing a copy of his Japanese import for me to listen to, and it's become one of my favorite Herbie records from this period.

I'm looking for Big T's THINK WELL OF ME as well. Hmmm--does this post make me fourth in line?
-
It sure is, Lon! I read that one several years ago and enjoyed it immensely. She's working on a followup about New York in the Fifties--I'll be buying that one as soon as it hits the stores.

Robert Sklar, MOVIE-MADE AMERICA, a book I bought a couple of years ago, knowing (as with many of the books I pick up) that one day it would announce, "Hey, read me!" from the stack of volumes wherein it resides. Just finished Spain Rodriguez's graphic-novel adaption of William Gresham's NIGHTMARE ALLEY (a very haunting late-40's noir story about the rise and fall of a spiritualist con man). Also reading THE MUSICAL WORLD OF J.J. JOHNSON--I'm hoping to do a special about him for what would have been his 80th birthday this January.

I think you're right, Weizen--this seems to match up with what I remember reading on Alan Lankin's site. Evidently this is being released in Japan in conjunction with Blue Note's domestic release: (from Alan's site)
-
What Miles at Birdland is that? The same material that Blue Note was once touting for imminent release?

What music did you get for Christmas...
ghost of miles replied to vibes's topic in Miscellaneous Music
In addition to the previously-listed, the first two volumes of the Boswell Sisters on Nostalgia Arts and Nat Pierce, BOSTON BUST-OUT. Also a non-jazz title, Rhino's re-issue of Televison's ADVENTURE. -
Agreed. Can I put that on my tombstone?

Favorite Holiday Movies/music????

THE LEMON DROP KID gets watched religiously around our household come Christmastime. My wife sings in the choir at her church's Christmas Eve service; I pick her up around midnight, and we always go home and watch A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1951). MIRACLE ON 34th STREET and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE usually get a viewing around this time of year as well. I really wish that CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT would make it to DVD so that we could throw it into the mix as well. And my wife has a special weakness for MR. MAGOO'S CHRISTMAS CAROL. -

Thanks, man, I knew I left that lying around somewhere! Could ya drop it in the mail for me, maybe w/a piece of paper wrapped around it so that the mail clerks don't see?
-
I'm extremely grateful for your presence here, John, and not just for your political input, but for your interest in modern improv music as well. Keep up the good work in all of your endeavours, and happy holidays--whenever I finally get out to the great Pacific Northwest again, I fully intend to look you up.

Those of us who attended college in the mid-1980s will possibly remember this stellar moment in the history of cinema: Some friends of mine & I got blotto one Friday night and went to see it when it came out... CITIZEN KANE it ain't.

I'm curious about this as well, Chris. The last time I placed a Daedalus order I bought the Don Ellis title from this label, after determining that it was the the OOP Candid material. Mysterious, though. They seem to be offering a lot of repackaged Candid music.

Thanks for the feedback, gents. I'm getting the book out of the library this afternoon, but in the meantime I think I'll go a-huntin' for a copy of 110th St. It's always a pleasure putting together programs like these.
