Some great rock there! I've just been recently getting into Aimee Mann (Bachelor No.2)! I've also lately been listening alot to The Postal Service, Colplay's first album, Hope Sandoval, and Jon Brion's soundtrack of Punch Drunk Love. If you like Hope Sandoval, be sure to check out her early 90's group, Mazzy Star (my apologies if you're already familiar with them!).

I've heard a lot of good things about this singer, but this new release is kinda--well, blah. Just politely meanders along, never really catches fire... what's the rest of her work like?

Maybe not the best way to put it, but jazz has a permanent shelf-life for me. Somehow I instinctively sensed this when I started getting into it, which is why I didn't hesitate to put so much time, effort, and money into it--I just knew that I would love this music for the rest of my life. I've been a music fanatic since I was a kid, and in jazz I found a convergence of all of the elements that I love about music. I do go through phases, though, where I think, "Damn, I want to listen to some rock," and then I do, whether it's spinning old Ramones re-issues or Wilco's YANKEE FOXTROT HOTEL. Sometimes a particular artist, such as Elliott Smith, will come along & momentarily take up a lot of my listening time; I also occasionally get bitten by the classical bug, though this hasn't happened for awhile. And posting here (as well on the old Blue Note board) has been a great way to discover new artists, both jazz and non-jazz, or just artists that I'd heard of but hadn't paid much attention to. I also tend to try to mix periods & styles a lot throughout the listening day, unless I'm delving into something new & wonderful like the Mulligan Mosaic, in which case I may listen to it straight through. Otherwise I like to throw a hardbop, big-band, vocal, bebop, and free CD all into the mix... That keeps my ears from getting too jaded. I rarely get tired of it, though--my love for it just goes so deep, you know?

Still hope to catch you in Saugatuck or Holland sometime (my mom went to Hope College). Can't make it next week, but thanks for posting the dates... I definitely foresee an Organissimo gig in my future.

Awesome review of the box by Joe Milazzo here. Just found a vinyl copy of OTHER AFTERNOONS at the station the other day--might see if I can get our engineer to transfer it to CD-R.

I think Jim's remark was simply rhetorical. Obviously the thread hasn't been closed. It's probably safe to assume that he & other posters who like the political forums are frustrated that this would come up again as an issue, in light of all that's been done to make the forum unobtrusive. And, as Weizen pointed out, most, if not all, of any inflammatory discussion lately has come from NON-political threads. What we really need is a poll on whether or not to ban Yankee-bashers... (oops, except that would knock out about 95% of the board... )

King, I'm not sure--I have the late-1980's translations of THIRTIETH and THREE PATHS, plus the paperback of her poetry that came out in the mid-1990s. Are there additional English translations? Another Bachmann fan--hallelujah! We should form a club. I love her short stories, too, in THE THIRTIETH YEAR. Still haven't read THREE PATHS TO THE LAKE, though, or any of the Malina cycle.

Came across an interesting parallel in an article I was reading about Smith the other day. When he died I thought a lot about Charlie Parker, because they were both the same age, and because they both had an intensely devoted following--but now I learn that Smith was a huge Chet Baker fan! Why did I never hear that before? They both certainly have what I call a junkie-lullabye kind of intimacy to their vocal approach (although Smith's is much edgier, IMO). They both were junkies, of course, and if James Gavin's speculation is correct, Baker was a suicide as well.

Don't have a discography at hand, but I know that A LOVE SUPREME was recorded on Dec. 9, 1964, exactly one year before my birthday. Close enough--I'll take it!

Just got the Uptown Christmas CD from Chuck several weeks ago & will vouch for it as well. The Joe Pass mentioned earlier is also good, and I can't wait to hear the Pearson once the new Mosaic Select arrives. The Bill Evans Verve box has a very funny version of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" on which Evans sings. That's one of my alltime favorite holiday jazz tracks.

I've heard good things about the big bands that Sam Donahue led throughout the 1940s and decided to bite on a couple of the Heps out under his name (specifically the Navy band titles--isn't this Artie Shaw's Navy band, taken over by Donahue after Shaw left the service?). Any opinions around the Organissimo joint concerning SD?

Last time I checked, the MERCURY BLUES AND RHYTHM 8-CD box was in the clearance section for $15.99. Even if you have to pay shipping & handling (about $3 a disc these days)), that still comes out to $40 for a box that retails around $90-$100. And if you don't have to pay shipping... it becomes a REAL steal.

My brother gave me the MARQUEE MOON Rhino re-issue as an early birthday present last night. Planning to pop it in the player at work later on today, but I was skimming the liner notes & came across this interesting tidbit: With the recording deal in place, the next step was to find a producer. Verlaine wanted to work with Rudy Van Gelder, who'd recorded dozens of classic Blue Note jazz records in his small studio in New Jersey. This was perhaps too out of left field for even a CBGB band... Richard Lloyd also provides an anecdote about auditioning for Atlantic Records. As he went to use the bathroom, he overheard Ahmet Ertegun say to Jerry Wexler, "Jerry, I cannot sign this band; this is not earth music." Lloyd says he thought, Wow, what a compliment!
