  1. Sorry SS1, our Lakers are friggin' self-destructing before our very eyes. Kupchak and Dr. Buss have decided to stop contending and trade it for a Clippers impression.
  2. I like Do You Want More the best. The preceding album Organix is also good. The worst thing about Do You Want More is that it is no longer available in its original incarnation. Newer pressings feature an inferior beat on "Lazy Afternoon"--they must have not cleared the original sample. It was my favorite beat on the album, I had to make a cdr of a friend's older disc to have it.
  3. 1. Kicking things off with a bang! These guys weren't kidding. Their identities are a mystery to me.**** 2. Slowing it way down, I want to say Paul Desmond here. Very nice, but very long(!).**** 3. I'm guessing this is a newer recording based on the sound of the piano. I like the drumming.*** 4. Amazing, what was this player hearing/following in his head to progress through these sounds? I don't have a guess.**** 5. At first I got a little worried this was going to be 12+ minutes of solo sax. I was relieved to hear the band kick in, and man they came in with a flurry! Great stuff.**** 6. Clifford Brown?***** 7. A bit too looney for my tastes. The bass reminds me of Buster Williams.** 8. Frantic paced little jammy! Fun!*** 9. No guess, not bad, not my favorite.*** 10. Beautiful.**** 11. Bring out the clowns for this circus! Not my bag.** Agustin, I have thoroughly enjoyed these two discs--although I liked disc one much better than the bonus disc. Muchas, muchas gracias amigo!
  4. Many thanks to EKE BBB! Sorry to be so late joining the discussion for BFT13, I mixed in a week in Hawaii. So now I've got my freshly tanned hide chilling next to the boombox giving these great discs another intense listening. I'm certain I have a few of these tracks and can't name them--my usual BFT struggle. ***** = highest possible rating. DISC ONE 1. Don't recognize this funny bunny, but it makes me smile.*** 2. I think I have this one but I can't remember what it is if I do. Really cool.***** 3. Grant Green?**** 4. Another one I think I recognize, but just can't put my finger on it.**** 5. Freddie Hubbard?***** 6. No idea, but enjoyable--the intro is pretty, in a good way, then the pianist goes for a fun romp. I can't say I know what piano player would play this way.*** 7. Miles Davis?**** 8. This one made me wiggle and jiggle in my seat. Party time! Organ with bass is odd...isn't it? No clue.**** 9. What a voice! Embarassed to say I don't know vocalists. Bessie? Amazing song, both instrumentally and singing-wise. A shame about the hiss.***** 10. Can't name it. Reminds me a bit of some stuff I've heard from Jason Moran. A bit too long, but I like it just the same.*** 11. For some reason Jackie McLean comes to mind, but I can't say I've got a clear guess. Complex approach from all involved, very intense.***** 12. This one has grown on me since I first heard it, the horns are oddly catchy. No guess.*** 13. It should be too cutesy for me, but I actually like this a lot--even the corny lyrics. The instrumental is absolutely infectious.**** 14. Now we're swinging, que no? Can't say I know who this is.**** Excellent BFT Agustin! Thanks again!
  5. That's a good point, Scott. Along similar lines, despite being their customer for years and ordering very specific types of music, Columbia House and BMG send me the most mystifying catalogs. The catalogs heavily feature smooth jazz if any jazz, exactly the kind of crap this dude has put on his list. They try to push pop and country on me and all types of horrible music, hilarious the stuff they think I might be interested in--I have to scour their websites to order what I want.
  6. I'll have to do that Evan! I've got a book with maps and all that stuff. Thanks!
  7. I leave for a week in Maui on Thursday, and I have a case with about 50 cdr compilations I put together. No repeats. All favorites. Many genres. Includes comps of my favorites from BFTs 1-12!!! Mahalo!
  8. My dead faves from my very small collection:
  9. Enjoy it while it lasts.
  10. First I've heard of this, what crap. I'm bitter. I'd rather have all the material than sound quality.
  11. Happy Birthday!
  12. Damned hippies.
  13. Ty: Do you take drugs Danny? Danny: Every day. Ty: So what's the problem?
  14. I dig the Steve McQueen Is Bullitt soundtrack by Lalo. The track "Bullitt Guitar Solo" has a unique sound, cool to listen to even if the movie isn't memorable.
  15. I can barely keep up, but I'll keep signing up if you guys want to churn them out at this rate... I'm already lagging big time on EKE BBB's test.
  16. A young and active man, I'm still in pretty good shape. It is frightening how fast it goes--I can see my brothers wearing down already (4 and 6 years older), and my dad (mid-50s) has a laundry list of ailments--bad back, bad foot, bad stomach, bad teeth, bad cholesterol, bad weight...life is so punishing, so unforgiving. I suppose it may be my fate to watch my siblings and father deteriorate before I too fall victim to the inevitable physical breakdown. I'll fight it as best I can--but I also have vices like greasey food, marijuana, and alcohol. It will all catch up to me, but I live for now. Hindsight will be 20/20, if it isn't already.
  17. Happy Birthday! ...and many happy returns.
  18. Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus (third copy, have cdr & vinyl... ) Thelonious Monk/Sonny Rollins (OJC) Paul Desmond - Easy Living Aretha Franklin - Young, Gifted, & Black
  19. Thanks EKE BBB for the great collection of music! I had mine all weekend and tried to get my responses done last night, but I got stuck trying to find disc 1 track 5 for-freaking-ever because I know I have it. I gave up at about midnight. Will post my responses soon...

    32 Jazz CD Cases

The music is uniformly excellent on all my 32 Jazz cds. And yes, they were inexpensive. I can hear all the instruments when I play them, so they sound fine to me... I thought some of the redesigned cover art was bad as it is--but I didn't expect them to disintegrate. Solution: White elmer's glue and a toothpick.

    Art Blakey

It appears it is advisable to just walk into Tower, grab every Blakey I don't have and ring em up... But for now I'm after these first five and will eventually get to the others later on: Free For All Mosaic Roots & Herbs Live At The Cafe Bohemia 1 & 2 Meet You At The Jazz Corner Of The World The Freedom Rider Buhaina's Delight Jazz Messengers (Columbia) The Big Beat Jazz Messengers With Monk '61 Paris Concerts '58 St. Germain Birdland Shows (Fresh Sounds) Ugetsu 3 Blind Mice 1 & 2
  22. Happy Father's Day! Toughest job there is, from what I see. My two older brothers have kids. No Noj Jrs or little Nojettes just yet. I can hardly watch my nieces run around the pool, so I'm sure to be a nervous wreck as a parent.
  23. I'm noticing a lot of my 32 Jazz cd cases are peeling apart, right on the binding where the artwork is glued to the plastic. Not too cool.
