  1. Going to shows just isn't in my routine. I need more free time and money--guess I should take a number and get in line.
  2. Did Bobby Hutcherson or McCoy Tyner sell out in LA? I'll be even more ashamed I missed them if they didn't.
  3. I hear Seattle is the absolute shit for skateboarders, not that this helps Jim in any way. Have a great vacation, Sangrey fam.
  4. #9--I spent more time earlier this evening scouring my shelves for something. I've got tons of cdrs I from emusic I could have been talking about...
  5. Yeah, disc 5 is smokin'--it got numerous repeated plays before disc 6, which I am playing for the second time tonight...
  6. Back from the dead, a dusty old thread. Even a cameo appearance by Mnytime. My favorite disc is IV, with "Niger Mambo" and "Shirley" being my favorite tracks. Beyond this high point it is uniformly excellent.
  7. I've been saying since Rasheed joined the Pistons that I think they can make it to the Finals--the Wallace/Wallace combo is very formidable. Weird loss for the Lakers, just left me shaking my head for the most part. A 32 point 3rd quarter followed by a 13 point 4th. WTF. Tons of bewildering, unforced turnovers. The Lakers had their most successful quarter with Kobe coming off picks, then driving and making a decision to score or dish the ball. I thought the technical foul against Kobe was crap, but whatever. It really shifted the momentum though. Which Laker team will show up next game?
  8. I actually tried that already, Ubu. Maybe someone else could try and see what I missed, because the most likely candidates I came up with do not have a track with the right amount of total running time...
  9. Thanks King Ubu, I appreciate it.
  10. I remember that you mentioned the album which this tune is taken from a while ago. I've been looking at my collection for a half hour with track 9 on repeat. You are killing me.
  11. And yes, Magic was the best ever.
  12. Horry was about 2 for 40 in last year's playoffs. To say his shot was "off" is an understatement. There's no predicting how the Lakers will play, but the difficulty containing Steve Francis will no doubt continue with the speedy Parker--who makes better decisions and is a better point guard than Francis (2nd only to JKidd IMO). However, as unpredictability goes, one can't forget these are most of the same Lakers who won three titles in a row. I believe they are capable of toppling the Spurs. I hate Doug Christie. Did I mention that? He's a good player though, I have to admit. Excellent work ethic and hustle, a good passer, and a decent shot. I just think the refs let him get away with hacking Kobe and I hate that he points to his wife every time he thinks he's on camera. Go Wolves.
  13. Tom Tom Club "Genius Of Love" Roger & Zapp "More Bounce To The Ounce" Taana Gardner "Heartbeat"
  14. Glad ya got it! I'm just sorry I've been enjoying it for almost a week longer than you! Great stuff, ya? Definitely great stuff! At least I got Jaco. Freakish ability!
  15. My sincerest condolences to you and your family, Randy.
  16. Doh! I have the albums from which numbers 10 & 12 were taken and failed to identify either one. At least I've only had the Gato album for a short while, and have only listened to it a couple times. I also seem to have identified the right artists for some of these, but placed them with the wrong tracks!
  17. Thanks to Rockefeller Center for compiling this excellent disc--I have been playing it all day today trying to get my responses down. I was trying to at least throw in a guess for each track, but some I couldn't come up with any reasonable guesses (not that I'm all that confident in any of the other guesses I made). BFT#10 - Compiled by Rockefeller Center 1. Jaco? 2. Wayne Shorter with Chick Corea? 3. Woody Shaw and Hank Mobley with McCoy Tyner? 4. I love this whatever it is. Larry Young? 5. Gato Barbieri? 6. Beautiful, mysterious vocals. I love the bass player's meandering line. No clue. 7. Friends & Neighbors...I can dig it. This violinist is off his rocker, if that is a violin I'm hearing. The sound, whatever it is, energizes the performance. Gary Bartzish overall. 8. An intriguing interlude, a duo. No guess. 9. Andrew Hill? Herbie Hancock? This is friggin' nuts (in a good way). 10. Pharoah Sanders? 11. A wild, boiling start that simmers down to a tough-sounding rhythm. Pretty cool. I would guess this is something out of the free school, of which I know little. A lot of thought has gone into the creation of this. 12. Well I'll be damned, something I have. I'll also be damned if I can remember who it is. I've been racking my brain and scouring my shelves for ten minutes... 13. Jackie McLean? 14. Django? 15. Has a Vegas lounge act appeal, makes me want a drink! Bah! The one track I have I can't identify. It's killin' me. Thanks again RC, and Big Al for the distribution!
  18. There used to be a Music Plus in Burbank that had no security whatsoever. I have friends who shoplifted like crazy from there, and were never caught--often swiping 6 or 7 discs at a time.
  19. I actually love synth sounds, electric pianos, clavinets, etc. I have tons of cds with those instruments. The synthesizer on the Santana cd I heard was a particularly annoying one, with this high-pitch twinkling that was so weak that it killed every song on the cd. The Gil Evans...it sounds muddled to me. Whatever it is about Jimi's music that I find appealing was lost in translation here.
  20. I have a cool Donovan song called "Get Thy Bearings." Leonard Nimoy - Ballad Of Bilbo Baggins
  21. I remember picking up a Carlos Santana cd that I thought was an old concert that ended up being much newer. It was awful, with the cheesiest synthesizer I have ever heard. It actually made Carlos' best compositions unlistenable. Speaking of unlistenable, I was excited when I picked up Gil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music Of Jimi Hendrix. Hell, I love Jimi, and I had heard Out Of The Cool so I was sure this would be great...I tried to like it, but no, it sucks. What happened?
  22. Happy Birthday Impossible! I hijacked an image from catesta for you...
  23. The Mavs are horrible to watch, and will never win anything. They are miserable defenders, and blew a 14 point lead in about a minute thirty seconds. 'Melo's doubtful for the next Nugget game, that sucks.
  24. I collect compilations of 45s--I wasn't born until '76, so I missed the real deal. My favorite is on King: Overnight Low "The Witchdoctor." Is this the place where the lady lives with the jungle fever? B)
  25. I found Bamboozled difficult to watch, yet very well done. Other film-makers would shudder to approach such a story. Not my favorite Spike Lee joint, but a good film which accomplishes the very difficult task of addressing complex social issues within the entertainment industry. Rap is not "a blasphemy." Rap has splintered in a lot of different directions, which have led to the recording of many different rappers representing many different value systems. Often the only press rap gets is bad press. Rap often celebrates irreverence, childish humor, derogatory dialogue...low brow dirty humor. Is it a backlash against feminism? An equal and opposite reaction? The lyrics in a lot of the offensive raps are just men saying what some men say to each other when ladies aren't around. Very disengenuous stuff--comedy to some. This is the legacy of rappers like Too Short, 2Live Crew, NWA...is it funny? Or is it wrong? This issue is so much larger than it seems. Attitudes toward women are a major point of departure between many cultures and religions. People make value judgements about each other over this stuff. I'm on the fence here.
