A friend who collects latin stuff has some great Eddie Palmieri records whose names I forget. Those records prompted me to buy "Harlem River Drive featuring Eddie Palmeiri and Jimmy Norman"--though not as solid as those straight up latin jazz plates, this is latin twinged funky soul jazz with that early 70s vibe and some groovy vocals. I dig it! I also like the Bobbi Humphrey song called "Harlem River Drive." Sorry if her name is like nails on a chalkboard to some of you...

Just picked up Jazz Party and Masterpieces By Ellington to add to Money Jungle. That makes 3 Ellingtons in my collection, yeehaw! Seriously though, Jazz Party is really sounding good to me. Third time through! Gonna have to add to that low number of Ellingtons. No doubt about it. Checking the recs in this thread, may go with one of the boxes...when I'm rich. Masterpieces on deck!

Apparently there were at least FOUR blown calls.

I have the 4cd set called "The Experience Collection" that has the first three Experience albums and a worthless fourth cd that has tracks from the same three albums (why?) and "The Star Spangled Banner" from Woodstock (worthless since I have the Woodstock cd).

Well that was an effed up way to start the day
Noj replied to J Larsen's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
First off I'm sorry J Larsen had to have such a horrible experience. My brother saw his good friend die in front of him by piece of scaffolding that fell from a high rise in downtown LA. Awful thing to be near sudden death. Worse if you know the person that died. Here's the way I learned it: "Suicide is for quitters. Some things take care of themselves. Losing perspective is not an option. There are little kids who can't get out of their wheelchairs to have fun and some can't even breathe without respirators. As long as you are healthy you better damn well be happy--and even if you aren't healthy you should continue to be happy." Then I learned some folks just have the wrong chems firing off in the ol' thinkbox. Somewhere in between lies where I stand. -

I like Willie Bobo quite a bit. His Talkin' Verve compilation and Verve album Juicy have been in my collection for a long time, relatively. "Fried Neckbones & Some Home Fries!" Cachao Y Su Ritmo Caliente - "Descargas" - another excellent disc recommended by JSngry, contains great Cuban and Mexican rhythms.

All depends on how you look at it. No one knows but the people directly involved. We'll never know what really happened. Time to put this crap behind him. Big bad #8 will be in uniform opening day. He better average 35 this year if he expects to make the Playoffs. He better get used to other big men lighting us up as that gaping hole where #34 used to stand is now loosely occupied by Floppy Divac.

Oh boy, I hope I didn't offend anyone. I thought the consensus was that it was a hoax. This happens all the time when I try to be funny.

Whatever happened to him or is it true that he passed away or was that just a scam? No idea.
-
Would this fit the bill? In a recent Hubbard discussion it was said this could well have been a Tina Brooks date.

420 isn't bad, seriously. I'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for.

How much do those run?

Maybe we should call the hampster Mnytime.

A friend of mine had a stand-alone that hooked up to his turntables. It burned real time, he would manually start and stop it recording. Really cool. It was recently stolen from his apartment, and I don't remember the details (make/model/etc). I'll have to ask him when I get a chance.

I'll be getting the Beasties tribute too, since I like the Lonnie Smith Boogaloo To Beck disc...

Coincidentally, when I watched Team USA in the preliminary rounds scrape by an opponent that didn't qualify for the Olympics, I knew we were in trouble. A friend and I hooted and hollered over a few dunks in the first quarter but then we noticed the sloppy game and the lack of any offensive scheme. After a long silence I looked at my friend and said, "We suck." I gotta say it, we got hosed for a lot of calls by these International refs. We're not a popular country right now.

Honestly, there are selfish players in the NBA who are not playing to win. I have to say I thought I saw some of that from Kobe in these last Finals, and really through the whole playoffs. Shaq was clearly the most dominant player on the court, but Kobe was taking more shots than Shaq while shooting at a lower percentage. I think he wanted to be a hero, rather than win Phil Jackson's way. This is inexcusable. Horribly enough, my team chose to pour salt in my wounds by trading away winning for Kobe to shoot more. Shaq is so much more than a player who fouls out by half time, he is the greatest center playing. They say he's lost a lot of weight this off season, motivated by the trade. To me he's still the greatest fat and overweight. The Lakers won when they ran EVERYTHING through him, including Kobe's shots. So, why have NBA offenses allowed players to "freelance" out there as opposed to playing the way the Big O advises? Perhaps all the huge contracts have made the money mean more than winning. Or...the fans come to watch Iverson play, so let him shoot. Either way what you see is teams which do not consistently run an offense. I know when I have watched the Lakers win--or any team win, for that matter--it is because they consistently run an offense which sets up players according to their strengths and creates open shots. The movements are predictable, the shot selection simply variations within the offensive set.

All of the problems you are describing with this Team USA (no, it isn't a Dream Team by any stretch of the imagination) are problems caused by the personnel. I blame the two shooting guards masquerading as point guards. Neither Iverson or Marbury know how to win as well as John Stockton, much less Magic.

Haven't heard Night Of The Cookers, but I'm sure I don't like Hub-Tones--first RVG I've sold.

Errors and Contradictions in the Bible
Noj replied to Shrdlu's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
From my post in one of the other religion threads: "I also see no reason why science would conflict with religion at all save a stubbornness to update obsolete data. Religion should be more about the lessons than the details, anyway." -

If you have it, it's already extended, no? Good point. If there is an omnipotence that rules the universe, then every thought and action would be a prayer. I am thankful for my life, I have it so easy compared to many. -
Should I stay in Philly or move to Seattle?
Noj replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Hit it boys! "Should I stay or should I go now? Should I stay or should I go now? If I go there will be trouble If I stay it will be double So you've got to let me know Should I stay or should I go?" I say skeedaddle to Seattle too. -
Errors and Contradictions in the Bible

My wife attends Unity regularly, and I join her from time to time. Of course the Unity "headquarters" is located near here in Lee's Summit. Plus they feature a lot of varied types of music- the local Unity here has a jazz series. I might try to play there sometime. When I walk into church and hear "All the Things You Are" I think "Yeah, this might be OK!" As someone who has been resistant to belonging to a specific church, I really like the the nurturing approach of the Unity church. At any service there is a varied ethnic mix, and many gay as well as non-gay couples. That feels right to me, it seems like a very positive Christian vibe. Everyone together. Celebrating blessings. No heavy guilt trips. Works for me! Great representatives for Christianity. Unity has all the best intentions, "nurturing" is an apt description. I went to the North Hollywood Chapter. Reverend Sheila Bantam (I think, it's been years). Kind, well-spoken lady--red hair, very fair, British accent. Hip sermons.
