  4. EQUINOX Equinox Here & Now ( Maxander Records MAX 75433) Jazz ought to be played in small clubs with inspired musicians, who love to listen to each other and anticipate to the music performed on stage. Equinox is such a group, born on the band-stand. It performs during the winter season each Sunday and Tuesday at the Bar-Restaurant Pavlov in The Hague. This band recently released its first album, titled: Equinox “Here & Now. “ A great debut album of this band, which learns that hardbop, although born more then 50 years ago, still sounds fresh and undated as performed by this band, that found a perfect balance. Hard bop is still alive! Equinox: Here & Now Keep swinging Durium
  5. JARMO SAVOLAINEN ( 1961-2009) On the day, the world mourned about the death of that other musician, MJ – breaking news – heads in the news papers – rumours - specials on all networks; the passing of Jarmo Savolainen compared to the death of MJ, was only noted by the Finnish news papers and Finnish networks YLE Suomi Radio: Jazzmuusikko Jarmo Savolainen kuoli sairauskohtaukseen Helsingissä 11. kesäkuuta. Hän oli 48-vuotias, syntynyt Iisalmessa 24. toukokuuta 1961. Savolainen oli yksi kansainvälisesti menestyneimmistä suomalaisista jazzmuusikoista. A fascinating Jazz piano player and composer, almost unknown outside Scandinavia, left us too early. Jarmo Savolainen (1961-2009) Keep swinging Durium

  7. CLAUDE HOPKINS I found two cheap reissues on the Galaxy label of this now almost forgotten band leader from the 1930s. Great music of a man, who was, with his music, ahead of his time. | But .......... don't believe all what's written on the album covers .......... Claude Hopkins - a forgotten band leader Durium
  8. I understand the orchestra played live for 15 minutes during the premiere? Was that in England? The Ellington band was in Europe in September and October 1959, but I don't know if they visited England. They were in Paris, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Berlin, Munich and Amsterdam and Eindhoven (both in The Netherlands) due to recording dates listed. Anatomy of a Murder Durium
  9. ANATOMY OF A MURDER Fifty years ago, in the summer of 1959, the film Anatomy of a Murder was released in the cinema’s all around the world. Otto Preminger, the director of the film, was an Austrian jew who fled to the States for the German in the 1930s and made other films like Laura, The Man with The Golden Arm and Angel Face. This film, Anatomy of a Murder, seems to be his best they say. But I don't want inform you about the film, the cast or the story, but about the music, the sound track - made by Duke Ellington. On the 31st of May, the first and second of June 1959 the Duke Ellington Orchestra recorded a dozen of tunes to be used as the sound track of this “court” film. Dave Holland was the last one to play a concert at this first festival day in the Middelburg abbey. At this historical inner court several concerts were scheduled during this weekend. At the start of his concert, Dave paid the organisation and the audience a compliment on its city and this venue, which is really a unique place for this kind of concerts. 17. I had never heard that before...is that a misprint? I mean, ok, I'm not the biggest Bill Evans fan in the world, but I sure as hell respect him. And John bunch too, albeit for different reasons. In the end though, props is props & Bunch not having props for Evans is kinda... Is that a misprint? Maybe, my English makes this a bit confused; mind that English is not my mother tongue. The booklet reads: Tony got the idea that he would like to do an album with with me and Bill Evans together playing behind him. Well, I didn't feel that I was in a class with Bill Evans, and frankly, I tried like hell to discourage him from that ( John Bunch)
  18. TONY BENNETT - BILL EVANS The Complete Tony Bennett - Bill Evans Recordings have been reissued recently as a double album on the Fantasy label ( FAN-31281). When this session was scheduled, they planned to make a vocal album with two piano players: Bill Evans and John Bunch, but the latter skipped the appointment because he felt, that Bill was not in his league. The June 1975 sessions, which filled the first record, were the best of the two. They were recorded without any preparations or rehearsals. They agreed about the selections and recorded it. 19. NEW COOL COLLECTIVE + JULES DEELDER On Saturday the 16th of May, 2009, The New Cool Collective performed at the Stadsschouwburg of Middelburg, in the southwest part of The Netherlands, as the run-up for the coming International Jazz Festival of Middelburg, scheduled in the last weekend of May 2009. The eight men of the New Cool Collective, directed by Benjamin Herman, had invited two special guest to tour Jules Deelder, Dutch poet, nicknamed Nachtburgemeester van Rotterdam (= the Night-mayor of Rotterdam) and his saxophone player Ger “Sax” Van Voorden. The first set started with the great tune Trees and Grass and Things, a tune, originally recorded by the Charles Williams Septet in 1972. followed by tunes like Boca Arriba and Lang Lang, named after piano player Lang Lang, with a great guitar solo by Anton Goudsmit, in his typically expressive and energetic way of playing his instrument. ( The Guardian, an English news paper seems to have labelled him once as: “Seeing Anton play his guitar, makes you wonder where the fire escape is..." ) The audience got what it wanted - A professional show by skilled musicians; fast latin flavoured rhythms by the percussion group ( a great solo by Frank van Dok on conga); the ludicrous poems and stories by Jules Deelder; the energetic solos by Anton Goudsmit and groovy tunes by Ger Sax Van Voorden, Deelder's companion for years in the Trio Me Reet + 2. 21. LOUIS ARMSTRONG in BLOKKER On the 10th of May, 1959 the great Louis Armstrong performed at a concert in the small village Blokker for an enthusiastic audience of 8000 men. This concert, now 50 years ago, has become legendary !! In the auction building, where normally apples and pears were sold, of Blokker, a small village between Hoorn and Enkhuizen in the north west part of The Netherlands the Louis Armstrong All Stars performed for the first time in this small rural village. Not the most obvious place for a concert by one of the most famous jazz trumpet players of the world, Louis Satchmo Armstrong himself. How did that happen? Alix Combelle

ALIX COMBELLE In the early European jazz history, especially the 1930s in France, the years of the foundation of the Hot Club du France and the birth of the famous record label Swing, you will often find the name of Alix Combelle mentioned in combination with other great musicians like Stéphane Grappelli (written as ‘Grappelly’ in those days), Django Reinhardt, Louis Vola and André Ekyan.
