  1. Miles > Shelly Manne (Metronome All Stars session, Jan. 3, 1949; Lumpy Gravy) > FZ And Victor Feldman's in the Lumpy Gravy mix too.
  2. This one has been sitting in the as-yet-unplayed pile at my house for a few months. (I think I bought it from a fellow board member!) Disc One is spinning right now. Jean-Jacques Avenel is KILLIN'. He's really using all that open space, in an incredibly tasteful way. I haven't listened to Lacy since he died. But he's unstoppable here. Thanks, David, for giving me the spur to put this one on!
  3. Gotta work Friday nite, but might catch the last song or two of Horizon. I thought Essiet Essiet was on bass; do you have better info from Bobby? Definitely going to Haynes on Friday. Gerald D. says it's the same band as on the most recent album: Marcus Strickland on sax, Martin Bejerano on piano and John Sullivan on bass. We'll see about that.
  4. Hey, Tom, if you've got some old issues of JAM around the house, look for one about two years back where people were asked about their desert island discs. Gerald said his was "Empyrean Isles."
  5. Welcome, m&s! Turns out this is someone I've been buying records from since the '70s!
  6. Not only the title, but also the cover...
  7. From a 50-cent bin this morning: An immaculate copy of Julius Watkins, "French Horns for My Lady."
  8. I remember the show fondly. Even when it featured musicians I didn't care for, it was still fun. I remember a pretty good Woody Shaw quartet set, and an interesting Charlie Rouse-Mal Waldron date. I taped cruddy cassettes of these back in the day -- REALLY cruddy, because the broadcasts were coming from a station 60 miles away.
  9. WARNING: RELIGIOUS REFERENCE AHEAD! A favorite from the great Joe Bob Briggs: "It's the greatest thing since sliced Jesus."
  10. Don't go through life without a copy of ONLY THE LONELY. Put it on the top of your list NOW.
  11. I believe Ted Curson cited Splawn as a mentor.
  12. You've been "phished." Same happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Forward the e-mail to spoof@ebay.com and they'll investigate.
  13. Still waiting for a reissue of the MPS session by Earl Hines and Jaki Byard. I desperately want to hear this one. Another thumbs-up here for the Hank Jones/John Lewis date. I remember that when Randy Weston was on Marian McPartland's show, he said he wanted to do duets with McCoy Tyner. I keep dreaming of this one.
  14. Another good 'un, dang near impossible to find: "East of Isar" on the Ego label, out of Germany. I got it because Benny Bailey was along for the ride, and it really opened my ears to Sal. I stumbled onto that Porter-Praskin thing in a deep-discount bin about six years back. Wow!
  15. 1. W, whether John Lee Williamson or Rice Miller. 2. Gene. 3. Max Roach. Nobody's asked about St. Louis Jimmy, who's under Oden in my collection.
  16. Tom, I take it all back! "Steadfast" has a very sweet-sounding CD master. By Malcolm Addey, of all people. Now, what the hell Strata-East CD was I thinking of??????????
  17. But where was Jim Morrison?
  18. Never heard of the guy myself. But an album cover like that inspires a little Google journey. Here's what I turned up: page with a little bio Also references in the Guitar Player magazine index to the issues of 3/75 and 1/95. And Ellis is apparently on a late-career Red Norvo album, "Vibes a la Red," on the Progressive label. Being on a Norvo date is a pretty decent recommendation for a guitarist, no? Anybody out there know more?
  19. C'mon, people -- where's the love for Hidalgo? The guy can get 30 different sounds out of a single conga, fer cryin' out loud!
  20. The desk of the person who wrote that AP dispatch is about 30 feet from my desk. I'm unable to get Mapquest to cough up a map, however.
  21. Was introduced to the wider public in the 1970s by his cameo appearance in Steven Spielberg's "Duel."
  22. The original title of that famous ballad was "I Remember Purvis."
  23. In conjunction with Don Cherry, Rollins holds patents for three refinements to equipment used to construct bridge piers. And he makes the best turkey gravy ever.
  24. F. Lee (Sims) LaRoca?
  25. Everybody recognizes the strong melodic similarity in the bridge.
