  1. Chuck, that was very tastefully stated! You are the master politician. (in the good sense of the word) It seems to me that Mr. Harley was on one side of a Sonny Stitt side I used to own. ("Deuces Wild" or something like that?)
  2. I first heard him on those old Black Lion LPs of Dexter live at Montmarte. Damn, what a loss. He was such a tasteful and sensitive musician.
  3. I have heard "new age jazz" described as being "gay" in the past, on more than one occasion. But in such an application of the term, I don't think it has any sexual connotations. It just means it has no balls, so to speak. As far as calling a player gay, well yeah, that is sort of non-PC. By the way, is this referred to differently in other areas of the country? In Texas, it is sometimes called Oasis jazz (because there is/was a station with that name that broadcast this shit everyday. Lite-jazz Oasis jazz Vanilla jazz emasculated jazz spice free jazz
  4. Agreed. That recording is criminally unappreciated. Sheila sings on an otherwise over-covered song "What are you doing the rest of your life?"
  5. The Denton (texas) Chronicle used to have a regular column called "the Blotter", where notable arrests were reported. When in college, I remember reading a report of a woman who had been charged with possession of marijuana with intent to sell. The intent to sell part apparently was not too hard to establish, since she had little price stickers on each of the baggies. Another edition reported a man being arrested for possession. He was pulled over for speeding. When asked to produce his drivers license, he removed it from his wallet and handed it to the officer. No problem, except he had kept a joint in the wallet, and it stuck to the back of the license. Hmmmm. Some people just deserve to get busted.
  6. I saw this on Ebay. Obviously it isn't THE white plastic alto that Bird played, but is it the same brand? Grafton...sounds vaguely familiar, and the age of make is about right. Not a bad price for a collector. Did Ornette also play a plastic alto? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...7310253248&rd=1
  7. Darn! When I read the topic in the main forum room (where long titles get lopped off), I thought it was going to say "Sun Ra plays Stompin' at the Savoy". Now THAT would be interesting. Which leads me to this question (pardon my SunRa ignorance; I only have a couple of the bands LPs). Did the band ever cover a standard?
  8. Yeah Free....as a fellow dinosaur rider, I can relate. Years ago I was on a club gig when a lady decided to leave the stage area. Somehow I managed to hook her knitted shawl with my water key (no, it is not a spit valve thank you very much!). It happened so quickly that when I had time to react, my outer slide was out of my hands and down to 5th position, moving fast. I opened my eyes only to meet her glare (a "how fucking dare you snag my shawl" sort of glare). Luckily I retrieved the outer slide intact and undamaged. Yes, we trombonists have to occasionally keep the peepers open.
  9. I am on a handful of CDs: The Dallas Jazz Orchestra, a couple of salsa bands, a couple western swing CDs (one, a tribute to Cindy Walker with Leon Rausch), a couple locally produced lite-jazz efforts (me as a sideman there strictly for the $) and my own 'limited press self produced' cd with Dave Liebman which I am most proud of. All in all, maybe 8 or 9. I am on one vinyl LP, but that was with the UNT One O Clock ('81).
  10. Anyone familiar with the Dual 1219? I know that this isn't exactly high end equipment, so bear with me! This nevertheless appears to have been a quality TT. It has a nice heavy wooden base. It is playable at 33/45/78. It still has the original Dual stroboscope disc that fits on the platter, as well as the LP stacking spindle (not that I would do that ) From all indications, this TT was very well taken care of. One question: On the base, it has the words United Audio, yet it is a Dual TT. What's up with that? It has the cartridge shell, but no stylus. The dustcover works and isn't even scratched. I think at worst I have found a "new" back up TT. (for $10) Thanks edited: Oh yeah, it is pitch adjustable too.
  11. Around this area, we are fortunate to have a decent jazz radio station, albeit a college one; KNTU. The musical palette is varied, despite a preference for big band music (understandable, considering the One O Clock/Stan Kenton heritage etc). That said, there are some seriously challenged individuals working there. (volunteers) Not a day goes by when I don't hear a mispronounced name...usually that of a relatively well known jazz musician. I used to keep a flip folder in the car and jot down the most memorable ones. Three days ago I was treated to a nice Oscar Peterson trio recording from the 50's I had never heard. After the song ended, I was informed that I had been listening to the "Scott Peterson Trio" )I had no idea that he had such talent; this didn't come up during his sentencing hearing. Other variations: Dizzy Gillespie (Gillepsie or Gillispie); Paul Gonzalvez (Paul Gone-solves); the list goes on. I am more amused than annoyed; laughter is good for the soul, and its easier to drive while laughing than when crying.
  12. I bought this CD recently..."Roswell Rudd" (#10 in the 'Free America' series) I have this one on vinyl already. Loved it then; love it now! The NYAQ horns, but with a European rhythm section. (Rudd, J. Tchicai, Finn Von Eyben - bass, and L. Moholo - drums. Has the original liner notes as well as updated observations by Philippe Carles. Nice production, with lots of attention and respect towards the original project. I need to sit down and listen to both - one right after the other to compare. Has anyone done so? This release sounds very clean, but it has been awhile since I dropped needle on the vinyl. Recommended highly!
  13. Here is my day's haul. I went to a flea market at Fair Park in Dallas today. When I spotted the vinyl dealer I knew I was in trouble! I picked out a stack of LPs that were $5 and $6 each but the dealer gave me a break; $3 each. (and all but the MJQ record are in practically mint) I am especially pleased with the MJQ find though. I had no idea that they had ever recorded on Apple. among my finds: Liebman/Beirach - Forgotten Fantasies (Horizon) The Montreaux Collection (Pablo) - 2 LPs Dizzy Gillespie - The King of Bop (Everest) rec: NYC 1945 - 1946 "Featuring Charlie Parker, Miles, John Lewis, and Max Roach". Side one has vocals by Gil Fuller and Dizzy - plus vocals by Alice Roberts (?) Previously released material I am sure, but its hard to pass up. The Griffith Park Collection 2 (Elektra/Musician) - 2 LPs Art Pepper - Artworks (Galaxy) Pete Christlieb/Warne Marsh - Apogee (WB) Modern Jazz Quartet - Under the Jasmin Tree (Apple)
  14. YES! Billy Harper has one the biggest sounds on any instrument. I first became familiar with him when I picked up a copy of Soran-Bushi.B.H. on Denon (Japanese release:1977) That recording is so spiritually moving. I was very knocked out upon my first listening. I am ashamed to say that I haven't tracked down more of his releases. Any recommendations? How does the one LP I have compare with others? As a UNT alum, I was always aware of his being the first black in the Lab Band program to land a seat in the top band. I envy anyone who has seen him perform live....and with that lineup? Wow!
  15. I stumbled across a stereo copy of "For your love" the other day at Salvation Army for 99 cents. Looked it up in Goldmine. Says it's worth from $50 up to $200? (Sure I'd sell it! )
  16. Found this intriguing 45 rpm UK release on Ebay awhile ago. Benny Green with Strings...acc. by John Malachi - p, Tommy Potter - b, Osie Johnson - dr. (rec. '52) Esquire records. side a) 1) Serenade to Love 2) Embraceable You side b) 3) Stardust 4) There's a Small Hotel
  17. Any opinions on the Dexter Gordon 3 CD mosaic set? I am watching the mailbox daily, impatiently anticipating its arrival! This will be only my 2nd Mosaic set, and both of them the lower priced 3 CD editions. (the first one I bought was the Grachan Moncur III release) I bought the Dex set on Ebay (sealed) without doing any prior research, and I was lucky I didn't spend more on it than I could have directly from Mosaic. I think I spent $2 less.
  18. May this venue succeed. Hats off to John Z for underwriting it.
  19. Man, you've got a good look (errr, yes... I do prefer women) and you make nice-looking kids. Thanks. She is the only one I have (and most likely WILL ever have). She's a good kid, and she has me wrapped around her little finger. Hell. why not spoil 'em. Life just sucks when you get older anyway.
