  1. Biscoito Fino is also doing a fine job here. they released the OST for the movie about Paulinho da Viola. a gem!! some originals from Donato, the classic song of Gil "A Paz", one from Arnaldo Antunes and "Sambolero" which is co-written with Carmen Costa.
  2. i agree with you Eke. Dexter is in the house when i listen to this song. by the way, on the album it says that is an original composition of the leader but i was sure someone would identify other songs on it. anyway, it is a lovely composition. if this song was recorded several times it coulda become a standard. i´m always humming this song when i´m walking by myself... Marcus
  3. i was listening to track14 a few moments ago trying to identify Maiden Voyage there. never thought about it but it's true. i love this song from Sting and what really surprised me is when Eric starts his improvisation and quotes Ravel's Bolero. there is a fantastic jazzy version of this song on Sting's DVD All This Time with Jacques Morelembaum on cello and Christian McBride on bass plus other musicians of course. i was not familiar with Eric´s work and decided to get this CD because Englishman was there. pure curiosity first, pure joyness after Marcus
  4. i was sure you would love it Lon. Mike, don't expect any brazilian label to do that. i was told last week that each title in Brazil is manufactured on groups of 1000 units for the whole country. this explains why titles goes OOP so fast here without prior notice. in 2002 all 11 albums from Paulinho da Viola were issued duly remastered. there are 2 that i´m still looking for and they gone OOP on the same year. Marcus
  5. Mike, you should also listen to Ed Motta's rendition of a classic Joao Donato's tune "Bananeira" available on the Songbook released by Lumiar a few years ago Marcus
  6. Happy Birthday my dear friend!!!
  7. my dear friend Lon, all the best and many happy returns!!!!!!!!!!! Marcus
  8. ok, we have a thread about bossa nova and hard bossa but brazilian music is so rich and diverse that i feel we can go beyond the bossa nova atmosphere. Almir Chediak's label Lumiar, specialized in Songbooks, is announcing on their website 2 new releases: .Emilio Santiago encontra João Donato .João Bosco - Songbook (3cds) João Donato is well known for his work but Emilio is one of the greatest singers that we have on the last 20 years. it's a very enjoyable disc! João Bosco is one of my favorites on brazilian music. this guy plays acoustic guitar like no one else and has some of the finest compositions of the last 30 years on the MPB scene. the regular songbook treatment of Lumiar with special guests on each song. i´m gonna pick my copy on Saturday!!
  9. DrJ, how about a boxset with 13 albums of Powell?
  10. i got this yesterday and it's just wonderful!! WILSON SIMONAL NA ODEON (1961-1971) produced by Wilson Simoninha & Max de Castro 9 cds including 12 LP´s + singles + EP's + rarities. 24Bit remastered with a beautiful 64page booklet. each single cd is also available separately. he is one of the most underrated artists in Brazil but he was so gifted musically. he died in april 2000, 62 years-old, not having been recognized as one of the most inventive singers/musicians on the MPB (Brazilian Popular Music). his 2nd album on 1964 "A nova dimensão do samba" is so important as Ben's "Samba Esquema Novo". Nanã (a classic hit from Moacir Santos) is fantastic and an instrumental version is also available for the first time. my favorite song of the whole set is Sá Marina written by Antonio Adolfo. by the 1970's when Brazil was submitted to the goverment of militaries, he was unfairly accused to help the authorities identifying artists that were against this non-democratic system. this accusation destroyed his career and himself. this is one of the best reissues of the year here in Brazil and the title of his first album says it all: Wilson Simonal tem algo mais! Marcus
  11. the Marquis de Sade album is my favorite on the VEE series and i started to pay attention to Lalo's work after this one. the mixing of different musical genres is typical on a Creed Taylor production and the quality of Lalo's compositions are remarkable. i went to Buenos Aires this year and burned copies for some friends there and none of them have enjoyed it even Lalo being from Argentina. my father also does not understand why i´m so passionated about this album. my only negative remark is that it's too short. anyone is familiar with the album "Return of the Marquis de Sade"? i still don't have this one but it's on my wish list. Marcus
  12. Mais bien sur never heard about Aldo Ciccolini. will try to find some stuff from him Merci bcp!
  13. Mike, that's exactly what most amazes me on this track. it's unexpected and so creative. you can also dance samba with this tune Marcus
  14. hey, that's Mike's job! ooooooops
  15. jazz is made of risks and track 10 represents that on my BFT. i was expecting to be banned off the board for this one surprisingly, there are more positive impressions than i could expect. i was quite sure that i knew some of you very well....i was DAMN wrong Marcus
  16. Tooter, don't give up Ron's was the first reason for me to add this one on the BFT. for me he is my favorite bass player ever, period. i knew that it would be controversial since lots of members here always have some negative concerns about his later work and i was thrilled the first time i heard this performance of him 2 years ago. his solo is amazing and last year i had the opportunity to attend for the first time to his gig at Mistura Fina. my wife knows how devoted i am to him and i was on the front line and when he came to stage i just talked with myself "god, he really exists!!" and my wife heard it and never forgot it. the whole album is an underrated gem and i thought people would recognize instantly Ron and the drummer too..... Marcus
  17. a quick recap of players/songs already identified: 1/3/4/5/7/11/12/14/15 Marcus
  18. billions of thanks to all of you who enjoyed and praised my compilation. it really means a lot for me. i love you guys Marcus
  19. brownie, why you don't like the guy on track 11? i have introduced my father to him back in 1996 with his first Telarc release. we both became heavily addicted to his work. we listened to track 7 for the first time in my car and we just felt stunned about their ideas and performance. Satie is my favorite classical composer among with Mozart. the idea of having Jacques perfoming an entire Satie program was a dream to come true. that's another surprise for me that some people find this track boring or annoying but this is one of the many positive aspects of a Blindfold Test! Marcus
  20. Peter, this album is more than great!! it's my favorite Jamal i wasn't expecting that this tune would have such negative approaches. maybe because of the electric bass but what Jamal and the percussion guy does on this tune is amazing. i was expecting this to be OOP too but it seems Amazon has it so GUYS give this album a chance!! Marcus
  21. i´m feeling kinda sick the last few days so today i´m at home. the good thing is that i can browse the board the whole day! Mike, some informations about Ed Motta. first of all he is the nephew of Tim Maia, the godfather of brazilian soul and one of the greatest artists that i ever seen in my life. his first 3 discs " Conexão Japeri","Um Contrato Com Deus" & "Ao Vivo (Live) are deeply on the funk/r&b vein and are still my favorites so far. í attended the live gig in 1990 so i love this one. i don't think you're gonna like them. then in 1990 he released his 4th album "Entre e Ouça", radically different from the previous ones, with a lot of instrumentals, meaningless lyrics on his own language known as "Edmotês" and it sold absolutely nothing. the record company fired him after this one but it's an underrated gem. maybe you'll find something for you here. he then moved to New York and caught the brazilian music virus and decided that it was time to return to his own land. in 1997 & 2000 he decided that was time to earn some money and did 2 very popular albums which are not my cup of tea except for 3 or 4 songs. the good thing is with the money, he fulfilled his dream to release an instrumental album "Dwitza", his favorite so far. i went to several live performances of that album and he usually played Maiden Voyage too. i remeber that Lon started a thread long time ago praising this album and i left my impressions too. as i was sure Lon would not be involved on this BFT and i wanted to start with something that could blend several cultures, i decided to pick this one and i was sure that the electric piano would hurt some people but the soprano solo would be appreciated. i love the sound of electric piano, stuff from Chick & Return to Forever and this particular song is a tribute to another great brazilian musician Dom Salvador. Marcus
  22. done Dan MCO
  23. if i remember well (and i can't check as the search function does not work for me) AMG lists only a single release as a leader for Gary Foster. Mike, you're gonna have to convince Gary's mother as my copy i´ve robbed from my father Marcus
  24. Ed Motta is one of the guests on Moacir´s latest release "Ouro Negro". it is a 2cd release. Ed sings/performs Orfeu you can also find there Milton Nascimento, Joyce, João Bosco & Gilberto Gil Marcus
