  1. Clare is one of those artist that really deserve the term "underrated" IMO .. I have both of the LPS you mention ( Extensions and Songs for Rainy Day Lovers ) but I havent played them in years ..cuz no working turntable! I've alway enjoyed his work as a composer /arramger ..he has touches of the Johnny Mandel approach in his string and woodwind stuff and the Extensions big band had one of the best sax section solis I ever heard ..if I remember correctly .. needless to say, he's also a wonderful pianist ..and whoever mentioned his unique harmonic sense was right on the money .. thaks for the hedz up on his website ..I'll have to see if those LPs have bee remastered for CD..
  2. I can tell you ..mixing an album takes at least two days ..not counting "party time"..( and post mixing R&R of course ) Methinks DEEP will resurface late this week with more outrageous tales from the Big Apple ..

  7. Ddidn't see the show, but the last one I recall for the past several years was LA studio guy Vinnie Coliauta .. before that , it was Omar Hakim for a while .. and it doesn't matter if you get to hear their name ..thay ALL get paid quite well , fly and live first class, etc ..

  9. SGUD, Of course I know Eddie Cac. He was with Julius LaRosa. He wanted to buy some vintage cans from a cat I used to watch and learn from. Haven't seen Eddie Cac since my Condon days. DEEP Weird: I wonder when he did Julies gig ..? cuz I did that one too in 65 ..when I wrote some stuff for him .. John Dentz ..yeh in the 60s with Frankie ( Chico ) Randall , right? I recall he had a VERY fast set of hands on him ..

I haven't seen him since the early 60s in Lodi NJ ..when I was working in NYC with a singer named Frank D'Rone ..and we camped out a a friends house in Lodi ..and Tony lived there then as I recall .. I remember doing some hanging with him and Billy Lavorgnia during that peroid .. no info since speaking of missing drummers ..DEEP you ever run into Eddie Cacavelli in NYC? Sorry ..Ididn't mean to come off so holier than thou earlier, because my hands aren't any cleaner than the rest of us .in that musician friends trade CDs all the time of live performances and other materials they may want of mine .. (film scores , etc) As far as downloading the OOP and live stuff, I guess I have to accept there is a gray area that will exist for a long time ..as long as recording and download thechnology exists ..

Well ..you wanted opinions on downloading jazz .or downloading period: As a guy who has a new big band CD out ( and a big prodduction nut to be covered ) AND the composer/arranger of most of the stuff ( therefore having an intellectual property issue as well) 1. I think it is fine for ME to post partial mp3s for promotion and to give potential buyers a taste of what they'll get when they buy the CD ..or hear other types of arranging and scoring work I've done ..this is kosher and it's my choice of what I put out there. However: 2. If full cuts from my CD were posted for downloading, I'm getting screwed outta money that I need to pay off the CD I've produced ( thus enabling me to consider further recoording), plus my copyright protection is being violated. This IS a crime , although the government hasn't figured out how to enforce it. And us small potatos jazz guys cant afford the raft of attorneys that the RIAA brought to bear on all those Napster dorks who were megaripping Britney and Justin, et al. You jazz fans have to realize that jazz musicians are NOT rich and do have to foot the bill ( one way or another ) for getting our stuff out there for you to hear. We need to pay bills too .. And as far as downloading reisues and works of dead artists, you're STILL violating the rights of their estates to legitimate income ( that is , those who weren't screwed outta their copyrights when they recorded their work in the first place by unscrupulous producers... and record companies ) okay ..off my soapbox ..you get my drift

  17. Yes definitely check out pedals; they can be so very different one to the next! I have an old Camco pedal that I love and haven't really used another pedal that I like as much. sometimes , the stuff they made 30 years ago IS better than what you have available now .. If you can lay your hands on an old Camco pedal that was chain modified by Frank Ippolito, buy it! The wak spot on the original was the leather strap, and the chain/sprocket modification fixed that for good! look in the back of drum shops ..you might even find a couple "old" Ks

Regarding hearing loss: When I started giggng in the mid 50s, I did a lot of work with ( very appropriately here ) rock house B3 trio and 4tets ..Red PrySock, Tiny Bradshaw, shuffle blues stuff. Since the drums were usually stuck between the Leslies going full tilt and the only mike was on the sax guy and the gitar was the only amped axe, I learned early on to try and preserve my hearing by stuffing cotton in my ears ..( as y'all know playing two hand shuffles with 3B stix on heavy ride cymabal s for four hours a night will build up chops , but it WILL be noisy ! ) After that, Like his Wingness, I went on to play with a bunch of big bands suffering the same brass abuse in my ears ..still using the cotton ..add to that about five years in a studio with a bad tinny headset ( late 60s ) pounding a click track in my left ear .. the upshot is even though I spent years producing ( and mixing at low levels ) in studios, I STILL have tintinnius ..and I was careful .. The point of this is all you young guys who are playing in greatly amplified situations today, TAKE CARE OF YER GODDAM EARS!!! ..you only get one set and its really easy to screw them up. BTW: My favorite kit ( when I was still playing ) was a early 70s Sonar Rosewood kit ..same sizes as Wingys lit ..( 19 B/ 8 and 14 Ts / 6.5 -14 metal snare ) wide open ..and I had no trouble pushing a big band with it.

I posted it because it IS a sad commentary on the state of entertainment today, and that is related to the problems jazz performers deal with daily. I thought the disgusting lengths fading tenny boppers will go to trying to revive her musically totally unremarkable career was pertinent .. I guess it never occurred to her to learn to actually SING ..ar ACT ..or something .. MY point in posting this was: Britney herself isn't the enemy here ..the suits and PR flacks that dominate the music BUSINESS are ..

Well, it looks like after trying pseudo -lesbian lip locks with Madonna to revive her post pubescent scramble to remain in the press spotlight ( while still sporting a fairly genuine dearth of actual musical talent ), Britney has chosen to alert her publicist to her bouts with the porcelain microphone.. ( something many of us have done previously upon hearing her sttempts at "singing" ..) >> ( From todays Seattle P/I ..11/26 ) Did she or didn't she? The story going around is that Britney Spears vomited last week while partying with pals at Lotus, a trendy New York club.
