  5. Word * * the first use of this pseudo-street shorthand was ( I think) in the early 90s by either Arsenio Hall or one of the Wayans Bros ..
  6. I just saw this on another BBS, and it really blew me away .. we of the penciling business just lost a real great .. >>Billy May died yesterday. Here's his obit from the LA Times: Billy May, a 1950s bandleader, composer and arranger with a highly distinctive style who worked with such leading recording artists as Frank Sinatra and Peggy Lee, died of a heart attack Thursday at his home in San Juan Capistrano. He was 87. May began his career as a trumpeter with the Charlie Barnet Band in 1938. He soon was contributing arrangements characterized by what the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz described as "wailing, 'scooping' saxophones voiced in thirds." The best-known of his arrangements for Barnet was for the hit recording of "Cherokee," the Ray Noble song that became a standard of the swing era and Barnet's signature tune. In 1939, May joined the Glenn Miller band, where his arrangements included "Take the 'A' Train" and "Serenade in Blue." With Miller, he was perhaps best-known for his trumpet playing, notably on "I dreamt I dwelt in Harlem" in 1941 and "American Patrol" in 1942. During the 1940s, May also wrote arrangements for the Les Brown, Woody Herman and Alvino Rey orchestras and worked in studios and for NBC. During the 1950s, he led his own band, which scored successes with his arrangements of "All of Me," "Lulu's Back in Town," "Charmaine," "When My Sugar Walks Down the Street," "Lean Baby" and "Fat Man Boogie." The latter two were his own compositions. During the 1950s and 1960s, he also worked as arranger-conductor for a number of artists, including Sinatra on the singer's famous "Come Fly With Me" album in 1958. He was associated with Sinatra for three decades after meeting the singer in a New York saloon in 1939. His television work included composing, with Milton Raskin, the theme song for "Naked City," the popular ABC police drama that aired from 1958 to 1963, and music for the Red Skelton and Ozzie and Harriet Nelson shows. RIP Billy ..you will be missed Phil Kelly
  7. So sad to hear about Milt Bernheart .. Milt was on the very first "real " record date I ever played on and had written stuff for at the old Radio Recorders asnnex in LA in the summer of 1960 .Here I was, sitting in a studio full of REAL pros for the first time in my 24 year old life and I was scared shitless! .. I remember clearly the whole brass section ( because in those days you could see over the baffles ) Ray Triscari, Cappy Lewis, Stu Williamson , and Jules Chaiken were the trumpet guys , and Milt, Gil Falco , Tommy Pedersen and George Roberts were the bones ..lemme tell you , I was one scared pup for two days.. having to deal with both playing the kit and having written some of the charts, telling these guys what I wanted .. I just recall, that Milt ( along with Ray Triscari ) were very nice to me, and very friendly on the breaks ..and I always remembered it. RIP Milt ..I'll miss you
  8. mea culpa ..what you said was: >>All of my friends are White as are my elected officials. My teeth are as White as I can get them. Only one of my cars is White. My women are Yellow. My grass is green (the lawn that is) and my smoke is brown. << it was not musicians ..chalk it up to crepitating seniliy it still remionds me of the opolis saga .. what ever happened to the "book deal " ??
  9. Methinks his DEEPnessness is pulling our leg a bit ..I don't doubt his laundry list of possessions, but his references to "all my musicians are white" smacks of the very funny hyperbole in the "K********OPOLIS saga" on another BBS .. ( didn't wanna spell the name and have him find us ) Howsome. ever ..I'm not rich by DEEPies standards, but I do own my modest home, my own car ( singular ), have a sufficient stash of investments and enuff CASH to have fromted my own CD sans "angel"and am enjoying my semi-retirement with my new hobby .. producing actual JAZZ for myself ..of others like it, great ..in not ..well .. Howsome, ever , ( part deux) : I prefer the company of SMART, WITTY, and IRREVERANT people as opposed to the merely rich ones ..many rich people are either boring, tedious, or self absorbed . Othr than that DEEP, how was the Nola Party? didja enjoy the Perrier ?
  10. I remember Bev quite well .. In the late 50s, we were both working around the Dayton/Cincinnatti area ..She was working with the Pat Moran Trio whom I believe she went out to CA with shortly after this period. I dont know of her whereabouts or if shes still doing anything musically .. she seems to have dropped off the scope .. However ( small world dept ), I'm currently working on some string charts for Terry Gibbs ..and I know Pat Moran worked for him during the 60s ..next time he calls,I'll ask him if he knows whatever happend to Bev Kelly ..
  11. Uhhh .. We seem to have wandered far afield from DEEPies original content specifications for this thread ( namely, bebop, illegal substances, and fornication and other sybarritic delights ) BTW: Patricia ..Q 's pianist in the 50s was named Patti BOWN, I believe And I have nothing to say about DUBBya I aint said earlier . My feelings in that area are well known .. ..and no, I havent forgotten 9/11 either ..
  12. Here are a few more for your consideration ( tell me how many you've heard ..or heard of ) To give you a start, I'll group them by instruments .. Saxes ..both alto and tenor: Hank Mobley ( easy ) George Coleman ( also easy ) Curtis Peagler Wilbert Dyer John Hardee Jimmy Ford Andre Leroux Sandy Mosse James Clay Rany Lee Pete Brewer Wayne Delano Trumpets: Jerry Van Blair Dennis Dotson John Andersom Roddney Both Jay Thomas Ron Stout I'll do the rhythm guys later ..time for bed

  14. Just thot I'd UP myself ..new gnus !!.. >>CONVERGENCE ZONE CD RELEASE PARTIES 2/15 AND 2/16 Phil Kelly and the NW Prevailing Winds will perform at a pair of CD release parties to announce the recent release of their recent big band CD “CONVERGENCE ZONE ( ORIGIN 82417 ) at Tulas in Seattle on Sunday, 2/15 and on Monday at Jazz bones in Tacoma 2/16.. Both events will begin at 8:00 PM The NW Prevailing Winds are composed of the creme of the Northwestern crop of jazz musicians plus several special guests including PETE CHRISTLEIB and ANDY MARTIN ( on tenor sax and trombone respectively ) from Los Angeles.,as well featuring such well known NW jazz stalwarts as JAY THOMAS, BILL RAMSAY, JOHN HANSEN ,GARY HOBBS, CHUCK DEARDORF ,DAN MARCUS and many others.as well. The result is one of the very best large jazz ensembles in the Northwest ,playing powerful and exciting “straight ahead “ jazz in the mold of the Bill Holman, Count Basie, and Woody Herman bands, largely written by PHIL KELLY, a resident of Bellingham WA and veteran composer /arranger for film and TV as well as the Bill Watrous and Doc Severinsen “Tonight Show bands, as well as many vocalists. These promise to be unique and exciting musical events for big band fans. Unique in that the Prevailing Winds are so in demand for their own individual projects that assembling them as a unit is a major undertaking that only occurs occasionally, and exciting because an ensemble of this caliber is seldom heard as a unit in the Puget Sound area If youre in the NW ..put it on your calendar! thankz for your supp hort
  15. So .. ANAPONG = Korean Black Mollies, hmmm I remember on the old Claude Thornhill band.. driving across country in a car with the late Gene Quill ( on of my "road fathers" ) and a bunch other road rats gritting my teeth and making those ridiculous 600/700 overnight drives ..gulping those doozies, gritting my teeth ,and splitting the driving .. it's lucky my chest didnt explode!
  16. John was 64 I think .. about two years younger than I ( gleep! ) As a friend of mine, Colin Bailey said yesterday when we were disscusing the latest depressing news: "we'd best make the best of what time we've got here ..and enjoy it while we can " very true words ..
  17. Thanks Pete: I appreciate you interest in CONVERGENCE ZONE ( Origin 82417 ) , but I guess DEEP would pronbably prefer I ABSQUALATE to my own thread on this subject however, here we are.. so: I'd recommend: www.bigbandjazz.net ..or www.cdbaby.com BTW : the trumpet player was probably Jay Thomas ..and absolute monster .. Also BTW: DEEP ..I like the liner notes ..very descriptive and elucidative .. ( where can I score summa dat anapong ?? )
  18. Many Happys Patricia .. ..and may the next thirty nine or more years be as good as the first thirty eight have been! Phi lK
  19. I just recieved a conformation of this from LA ..apparently he'd been in ill healthfor some time , and kidney failure was involved as well .. really really sad ..he was 2 years younger than I am BTW: my tagline below is really inappropriate in this situation ..John was the antethesis of a wimpy drummer throughout his career.
  20. Bad news .. I've recieved several e-amils ( as has had DEEP , I guess ) that the veteran LA studio /jazz drummer died this weekend from complications from pneumonia .. I'll add more details if I fnad more out. John was a great drummer and a friend as well .. way too young to be gone .. RIP John .. Phil Kelly
  21. Good ears DEEP ..Yamaha C7 it was .. and while I too prefer the sound of a good Steinway ( much warmer ) , my studio of chioce was mre influenced by the great block rate I got and the fact that my mixer preferred that room.. I got three e-mails so far today about Johnny Guerin .. I'm attembpting to find out more details about what happened .. and ,seeing as how you are loath to leave the sanctum of this thread, I shall post an RIP note for John on the main board .. If you have a mansion that'll hold FOUR FUCKING GRAND PIANOS, what the hell did you need an "angel" for to record Son of BBB ?? ( sitting here in front of my cheezoid Yamaha GX 76 thats plugged into the computer ..)
  22. CRAP!! I DUNNO HOW TO MAKE THIS SHIT BIGGER ..OR BRIGHT COLORED .. but the sprrrrit wuz dere
  23. aw shit ..why not ?? HAPPY BIRHDAY CLINT!!!! What zat ? you got 10 years on me ?? have a see-gar and a coupla pops of MacAllens in celebratory fashionage HAPPY BIRTHDAY CLINT !!!
  24. Deep: The liner notes are quite good and very entertaining ( I especially liked the description of Dotson ) however: one small point: Sweet Georgia Upside Down is NOT ALSO KNOWN AS Sweet Georgia Brown ..is is a separate and original composition based on the CHANGES of SGB ,,in the Manner of "Dig" or other similar pieces .. it has it's own copyright and publisher ( moi, naturally in the DBA Fee Seize Music ASCAP ) nad if you use the term AKA, I may lose some performance royalties when your no doubt screaming NY junkie band CD is released ..( your definition, as you recall ) thank you for yer supp hort ... BTW: I'm currently buried up to the ying-yang in goddam SNOW!! ( about 8 " with more to come today ) VErey unusual for NW WA ..and I have bad cabin fever ... Missile, How come Watrous used (aka Sweet Georgia Brown)?? How does this read out? 1. Sweet Georgia Upside Down - This is an "upstairs" romp that features Lew Tabackin in his first of two guest appearances on this CD. It gets things fired up right out of the gate. Sweet Georgia Brown, upon which this tune is largely based, is usually played in the key of "Ab". This version is in "F" and upon first viewing the chart, Lew asked for "a minute to think about the key signature". All it took was about a minute. I counted off the tempo and WE WERE OFF!! Tabackin doesn't hesitate to sink his teeth into it. After Lew's lengthy statement the saxes come in with an impressive soli section which leads into the final full ensemble. Our lead trumpet player, Dave Stahl, took a little liberty with the last 8 bars of the tune by taking the part up an octave. As you can hear....IT WORKED!! BTW On Lew’s last chorus he and I played a little game of badminton. We batted the birdie around pretty good but when all was said and done there wasn’t a feather out of place. What took Stapleton out? (Bill not Bev...I took Bev out...duh!) DEEP DEEP: The edited version looks fine ..(just dont even MENTION SGB ..even in parentheses ) Watrous did that ..and it took me YEARS to get my ASCAP on it because of that goddam "AKA" I discovered after a great amount of bitching, a great nasty lawyer AND a separate copyright that had been listed with ASCAP since 1970 ( since I had been getting PRs from the Tonight Show for 3 years ) After about a year, ASCAP finally had to admity that they'd been paying the estate of the writers of SGB ..when in actuality , they owed me a fairly good pile of digit for the Columbia stuff over the period from 73 thru 75. EVen after paying my *shark* off ..I came out really good on that one.. Bill S died a long time back in LA ( seems like 12 or 14 years ago ..maybe longer ) AS I recall, he'd been living in his car.. The cause was acute alcoholism ..his liver just blew up ..and he wasn't even 40 , I don't think .. a word to the wise ...
  25. I've been a big Rod Levitt fan since the early 60s when I picked up the LP "43nd Street " ..Rod is one of the most creative and humorous musical minds to come down the pike , IMO.. and I agree that the players ( while not jazz solo starts ) leave absolutely nothing to be desired in the area of ensemble execution ..therby keeping the focus in this case where it belons : the arrangements.. Glad to hear he's still alive and kicking ..
