Deep: The liner notes are quite good and very entertaining ( I especially liked the description of Dotson ) however: one small point: Sweet Georgia Upside Down is NOT ALSO KNOWN AS Sweet Georgia Brown ..is is a separate and original composition based on the CHANGES of SGB ,,in the Manner of "Dig" or other similar pieces .. it has it's own copyright and publisher ( moi, naturally in the DBA Fee Seize Music ASCAP ) nad if you use the term AKA, I may lose some performance royalties when your no doubt screaming NY junkie band CD is released ..( your definition, as you recall ) thank you for yer supp hort ... BTW: I'm currently buried up to the ying-yang in goddam SNOW!! ( about 8 " with more to come today ) VErey unusual for NW WA ..and I have bad cabin fever ...

Wow ..so Dotson came up from TX to do the date? didn't know that .. and the late Bill Stapleton was a good friend of mine as well .. when he was at NTSU in the 60s, we played a lot of gigs and I peent some time with him trying to get him to use his talent to make some coin, but he wanted to go out with Woody and the rest unfortunately is history ..what a criminal waste of talent when he went .. It's funny, but I'm using Bills chart of" Come Rain" to pad out my book for the release parties as well small world department continues .. Cant wait to hear what your " NY junkies and Lew T did to SGUD ..

The guy is correctly identified above ( Rick Allen ) but my guess is he would be limited to either "para"s ..or "diddles" i.e" R RR R or for those losing the other limb: L L LL

C'mon Clint .. Ross Tomkins ..why? dunno for sure, but seemed to have a knack for materilizing right before a gig would start, and would vanish the same way afterwards .. whats the story you have on that ? Ross was a long time member of the Tonite Show. Doc would come on stage with the boys in the band all in their places except for the empty piano bench. Doc would look over to the sax section and say "Where's Ross?" He's turn around and Ross would be at the keyboard ready to go. Rumor has it that Ross would suddenly vanish from the bandstand and then suddnly re-appear after getting some "reinforcements." Ross told me about the time he was playing with Goodman. They rehearsing a tune when Benny stopped, gave Ross "the Ray" and said "What chord was that, Ross?" Ross replied "the right one." That was essentially the behaviour I was alluding to .. And if DEEP wants things back in a prurient mode, maybe he can relate the incident that lost Skitch Henderson his Tonight Show gig ?? ( Hint.. it involved a wet spot on one of the desks in the Tonight Show Office and the close relative of a MAJOR exec of NBC...and sosme flagrante deLICKto.. ) heh heh heh

Maybe Terry or Steve.... Uhh ...I think I sense the approach of Tico Torres, CArmine Appice, and Lars Ulrich here, guys .. or maybe we should call this thread " Jazz Drummers Hall of Fame ..with the exception of drummers who've played wwith Zappa" ?? furthermore, I think we should restrict it to drummers who keep some semblance of a top on, do not perform on spinning or levitating drum risers, nor use smoke pots or other pyro ..

The mention of Joe Morello brought to mind another drummer who really had that fingr control bag DOWN ( as well as probably the most dextrous bass drum foot in the business : Colin Bailey .. Colin has played with tons of great people over the years ,and cosidering the prodigious chops he has , he never overplays and saves the fireworks for wwhen it's his turn .. ( In the manner of Louie Bellson ..) It's a weird quirk of fate he's probably remembered best for his stint in Happy Kymes house band on" Fernwood Tonight" as the guy who sang " disco duck "" ...

Heres a link to a good article on Don Lamond someone sent me: http://www.jazzconnectionmag.com/Don%20Lamond%20Article.htm ( actually , I should put this on the Don Lamond thread I started TWO DAYS AGO ..while Sir Deep was in NYC waxing his wondrous wanger ! _) just checked: somebody already did!

I saw on another list that the Great Woody Herman Drummer of the late 40s Second Herd, Don Lamond died at a nursing facility in Florida ,where he'd live and worked for many years prior to his death. He was 83 Thats really bad news ..Don was one of my early influences and a drummer and I find it great that he was still able to perfom in FL as long as did .. an other great one gone ..RIP, Don Phil Kelly

I have no doubts ( nor any interest in ) the brobignian proportions of your alleged genitalia ( REALLY not my thing ..), but a hang and a few drinks would probably be fun sometime Too bad there's no longer a Jim and Andys ( which was my favorrite hang about 10 before you ..uh ..blossomed ..) or a Juniors .. sigh ..

Hmm ..I'm surprised Maynard didn't spring for one of them GM buses with the twin WCs at the rear ..but , OTOH, he probably did ..and from my recollections, you could never get in them because guys were always locked in them getting high, smoking weed, or just ralphing ( yecch ) and nodding out .. therefore, the majority of us preferred the aforementioned "file stop " ... the other thing was, nobody wanted to have to stand too close to the rack of band jackets hanging in the rear by the WCs ..lest one suffer the fate of the Kurds in northern Iraq .. those jackets are pprobably what gave McNamara the idea for chemical weapons..

( the" pentatonic fairy fuckers" PR staff analiguist sez ..) >>Some quotes from his website biography: "He simply drew from artists he admired - from Herbie Hancock, Tower of Power, Miles Davis, to The Paul Butterfield Blues Band - combined those influences, simmered slowly and somehow discovered a sound that has withstood the test of time." ..and what actually ran out of the G monsters egotistical anus was a pestilent pseudo-musical fetid blort of rancid amoebic dysentry that has been spreading its foul effulgence over the musical scene for too many years now .. may his money grabbing antimusical egotistical soul continue to masturbate nightly in front of his Billy Vaughn and Rudy Wiedoft shrine ..) ( recall those guys? they invented saxophone tracly squirting many moons ago .. the G person has merely degraded the awful noises they made even further ..) s'cuse me ..gotta go RAALLLLPPHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

( DEEP saaid ) >>If it takes a monkey two and a half hours to shingle a tin shithouse with potato peelings, how far does a rat turd have to fall to split a two inch plank?? << It depends how far the record company executives asshole was from the plank in question .. dem "suit rats" dump lotta heavy shit on jazz musicians...

Deep: These guys dont eat that kinda shit ..they're basically into Oriental food ( Thai , Japanese, etc ), sushi ..and hot saki, martinis, and Johnny W Black .. these guys are basically your basic old ex- road rat jazz types ..ask Smuylan ..he knows them pretty well frorm two years at the Bud Shank clinics (as well as being my token Noo Yawker on the CZ CD )

I'd always heard the pictured item referrd to as a "dumbek" or "dumbeg " its no doubt due to the viccisitudes of translating Mid Eastern words to English.. you say darbek .. I say dumbek .. it go so farback my brain be numb, heck.. darbeck dumbeck just bring it and take the check lets call it all a double ..

Peter Matz was MD for Carol Burnett .. it's possible JJ did either on the show ..
-
To the best of my knowledge, Starsy and Hutch was Tom Scott .. although JJ may have done some shows .. its hard to get at actual TV series underscore , because it vanishes into the production company archives ( read 2" tape somewhere in a Burbank warehouse ) and is never seen again ..

Heh Heh .. I cant wait to hear the NYC junkie version! also : I EXPECTED you to ignore my "fill " directions ..I would have ( you have to remember who the part was originally "for" hmmm? ) I will be very interested toi hear what Lew Tabackin did .. BTW: the 8va tpt part on the tag is a great Idea ..I'll make sure Brad does it .. when we have our CD release parties in February ( it takes six months to get these guys together again, and I wont use subs ..) finally: I'm copying your entire sterling review ..and e-mailing it to my entire "blow- dried sun- tanned -laid- back- lets- do -lunch" West Coast band band !! Luv ewe 2 DEEP .. September eh, ?? maybe by then, I can dream up something* hard* enough to bend you guys toenails a bit! SGUD ..chief windpasser NW Prevailing Winds ..

I seem to recall in the 50s and 60s there was a refurbished cathedral space just south of midtown that I think RCA referred to as "Manhattan Center " studios .. I think it was quite large and had room for a lot of players ( which was how all recording was done then .. ) , and if I'm not mistaken a lot of the Sauter/Finegan stuff was cut there .. along with a lot of jazz dates and commercially oriented stuff as well .. the room did have a definite "character " to the sound that came from there, since artificial reverb was very raw at that stage ( mostly just spring type stuff I think ) BTW: count me among the fans of live recording for jazz stuff ..I recorded most of my CD with all sixteen guys in the room at once ..couple runthrus, and light it up! It definitely adds to the "edge" of the performances ..

(MUFF) MISSLE, Yeah, it was done in nine hours and a quart of booze. Of course now they will master it and then we deal with liners and graphics. Looks to be available in late January early February. Had to do some overdubbing too. I played piano on one section that was missed at the date. Sounds pretty good to me but remember....THIS IS THE TAIL END OF THE *WET* SEASON!! When I listen to it after January 2nd it could be a whole other ball game. DEEP Very true .. grapes can sometimes get in yer ears when mixing .. In fact, after listening to the CZ mix one time in the car ( to kill time on the hour and a half drive back to the Northland from Seattle ), I put the reference mix ASIDE for four days before listening to it again ..to give myself the illusion of objectivity .. funny ..I had to do a small piano repair at the the end of the waltz on my CD too .. really anxious to hear what y'all came up with ..

I'm SO glad this was a gag! I almost puked in my document shredder next to the computer! geat site though .. I love the silhouette a lot ..but I think he retouched the length of his schlong before beginning the auto fellating ...

Yo DEEP: Didja get it all mixed in nine hours? if so, my compliments to your ( electronic )mixologist! how did it all come out? ( I deliberately did mine over a two day span because : 1. I got a good block rate and 2. I like to have time to rest my ears, have several preprandial libations and a nice dinner then go back , do a coupla tunes and bag it till the next morn ..finshed in half a day .. nice and easy duzzit every time

Clare is one of those artist that really deserve the term "underrated" IMO .. I have both of the LPS you mention ( Extensions and Songs for Rainy Day Lovers ) but I havent played them in years ..cuz no working turntable! I've alway enjoyed his work as a composer /arramger ..he has touches of the Johnny Mandel approach in his string and woodwind stuff and the Extensions big band had one of the best sax section solis I ever heard ..if I remember correctly .. needless to say, he's also a wonderful pianist ..and whoever mentioned his unique harmonic sense was right on the money .. thaks for the hedz up on his website ..I'll have to see if those LPs have bee remastered for CD..
