  1. I think I'll have a big plate of BeefaRino with my MD 20/20... ..and" go work on my repertoire ..add a few new tricks " ( appropos of my all time favorite Seinfeld episode ..)
  2. Jack Sperling, 81; Jazz Drummer with Top Musicians, on TV Shows Los Angeles Times, March 5, 2004 Jack Sperling, a jazz and big-band drummer who performed with many of the great musicians of the 1940s and '50s, died Feb. 26, according to his son, Matthew. He was 81. Sperling played with Bunny Berigan in the early 1940s and with Tex Beneke while in the Navy during World War II and also after the war. Among the other bands he performed with were those of Les Brown, Bob Crosby, Dave Pell and Pete Fountain. He recorded with Eddie Miller, Benny Goodman, Charlie Barnet and others. In the 1960s, Sperling performed with the NBC Orchestra and was the drummer on such NBC variety shows as those of Steve Allen, Dean Martin and Andy Williams, and on "Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In." His film work included playing with Henry Mancini in "The Days of Wine of Roses," and he performed live or in the studio with Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Mel Tormé, Rosemary Clooney, Lena Horne, Doris Day, Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr.
  3. The WDR big band is a state supported ensemble that is based in Koln Germany ( sorry, no umlauts ) that in addition to the artists mentioned previously, is often a venue for such Americans as Bill Holman, Maria Schnieder, Jim McNeely , Brookmeyer ..and others. It is a great and very flexible band with many fine soloists ..
  4. Hmmm .. the concept of a DildyScreedBlog has many positives .. that way, his DEEPness could pour out all his "stuff" ( both the vile and misogynistic blorts as well as the informative and truly humourous posts ) all in one place .. without being chased from website to website like the proverbial man with out a country.. ( or possibly a "cunt tree " in DEEPs case ..sorry ladies ) I'm surprised he hasn't thought of it by now ..
  5. To throw further fuel onto the harmonic analysis fire we've got going here .. ( pretty interesting stuff BTW ) I" ll toss in the following: when the three key pivot tones ( B, F, and A# ascending ) are played over a G bass note, you've got whachacallyer G7 9# chord .. the same three pivot notes over a Db bass ( now spelled Cb, F, Bb ) give you whachacallyer Db 7/13 chord.. and theoretically ( at least by a strring player, maybe a trombone player ) the B and the Cb would be played somewhat differently pitchwise.. dependidng upon the relation to the bass note. Thus bringing up the question of why ( when mathematically calculating the overtone series in one direction by sharps, the F# will have a difering number of vibrations, than a Gb calculated in the reverse direction ..this disparity was called the "comma" ,and they used to drive us crazy with this paradox in advanced theory classes ..( the same result would occur between B and Cb ) scratche yer head over that one! or just say fuck it ..and dig into some greasy blues
  6. I've never been big on Hawaaian slack key guitar, oud, samisen, reed organ, hand cymbals, fipple flute, the Lowery Organ, banjo, alphorn, slidewhistle, duck call, jaw harp, musical saw, ...or the bloody xylophone ..
  7. Hmmm ..well.. I think its time to mark my part "Tacit" , and absqualate , segue, whatever .. to the" bad bass player" thread .. this bloated beast is gonna explode sooner rather than later ..and I dont wanna get spattered with all the testesterone laced bodily fluids gurgling rampant here .. it was funny for a while, but its now sorta like watching a bad scratched 16MM print of "Deep Throat " in a smelly theatre ..sitting next to a noisy middle aged mouth breather with thick glasses, halitosis, a two day growth of beard and a raincoat in his lap ..doing something to make it jump up and down like a rabid weasel ..(something I'd really rather not contemplate ) see y'all 'round the corner , guys ! ..
  8. You're welcome, Conn. To further clarify, I think that if some would check, the original massagers were electric, the way heating pads and electric razers were.
  9. When do I get to hear the "New York Junkies" project??
  10. I , for one, wish his DEEPness would repost choice excerpts from the infamous "K******POLIS SAGA" from another BBS ( I'm sure Clint and Patricia remember this ) This was DEEP at his irreverent, satiric best ..one of the funniest things Ive ever read on the internet!! SGUD gives it FIVE STARS!!!!!!
  11. Hey .. guitarists can be conductors too! I play a lotta R&B shows back when I was still doing that, and lots of the Motown and Philly acts would have guitarist /conductors Youre right ..Portland IS a great jazz town for its size ..I know several excellent guitarists from that area .. BTW: REgarding PROs ..I've been a member of ASCAP since 73 ..and they all have their good and bad points ..currently, those of us who primairily did film/tv scoring have a HUGE beef going on about the relative royalty rates between songs and 'score' .. score getting it in the ass to the tune of .16 on the dollar vis a vis songs .. but thats another argument!
  12. Hi Fast T yeh ..I wrote stuff for all of them ( and basically played with Frank, Buddy , and Julie) I did some allbum stuff back in the 60s/70s/ and early 80s ..when they still used live musicians ..before the "machines" basically ate the record business .. If want to get singer work ( I assume youre a keyboardist ?) the place to hang is LA ..there are all kinds of guys looking for subs to cover gigs and all the accompaniests get to know one another .. BTW: on the subject of technology, I used to use SMPTEtrak and DP back in my pre-retirement "commercial" days where most of the musical genres required it ..these days, I still use Finale 2003 for a writing tool, and am going to upgrade to 2004 I think . sequencers are great as writing and sketching tools, but since Finale ALSO plays back what I've actually WRITTEN, thats all I find I need these days ..
  13. Just bumped into this thread, and I thought I'd UP it: Writing music has been my real gig for forty or so years .. ( check out the bio at www.philkellymusic.com if youre interested ) So: any questions , opinions , etc on the nutz and bolts of writing music ..just jump in maybe we can revive this baby
  14. Clint/ Patti et all: Possibly all the various DEEPs imploded from the stressful subtraction of fermented spirits ..and excessive sperm retention .. if so, he "blowed up real good" ..to quote the late John Candy on SCTV
  15. Why do I get the feelings that I'm reading the scenario for the Steve Martin flick: " MAN WITH TWO BRAINS" ??? Clint ..take a DVD or VCassette to Mexico with you of that old RAy Milland horror flick about "THe Man with Two Heads" or whatever .. you won't need the Cliff notes ..
  16. I have a bass player friend up here in Bellingham WA who's a really excellent player ..great time, good note choices, and really can pull a group along by himself if necessary. ( which way up here in baja British Columbia is sometimes neccessary since most of the really good drummers are busy either in Seattle and/or Vancouver ..there are a couple decent drummers but the pool is not deep ) Anyway, when my friend ( who's an avid golfer ) has to do a gig with one of the weaker guys, he refers to it as: "Hit the Ball ..drag Charlie" ( an old golf joke not worth repeating )
  17. This is a true story: Many Years ago, I was sentenced to play for two weeks with that god of swing, Eddie Fisher .. He had two conductors: the orch guy was named Eddie Ballatine ( at the first rehearsal, he told me " forget the hi-hat ..and be prepared to add or subtract beats instantly ) Eddie was cool .. the OTHER conductor ..was for Fisher ..he stood in the wings and literally conducted EACK DAMN SYLLABLE! ..without him , Mr. Liz Taylor not only wouldnt have know when to come in , HE WOULDN'T KNOW HOW LONG THE LYRICS WERE!! ..even with all that, we were continually adding and dropping beats for the whole bloody gig! aarrrrgh!! another true story : on a gig one time, one of the many "Ropes" type players sez to me before a show: "well ..whaddaya want? time ..or changes ? "
  18. I think I've finally figured this out ( dull as I'm assumed to be by our gracious(?) thread host ... DEEP is really a cloned experimental being grafted from Andrew Dice Clay.. and Don Rickles.. sho\rt enough for ya, DEEPie ??
  19. I gotta chime in with the "bad bass player" ( AKA "Ropes" ) can be overcome by a drummer with a good sense of time and concentration, but the end result isn't alway gonna be pretty . During my years accompanying singers (and on budgets that only permitted carrying a pianist and a drummer), I was forced to play with some of the WORST ROTTENEST ANTIMUSCAL dorks in the entire country bar none ..including ones with adhesive tape on the neck with the names of the notes in each position and the ones that would sorta jump up and down holding the neck loosley omitting a toneless ( and usually totally arhythmmic ) " FLUB/FLUB/FLUB/FLUB" etc. oh momma ..you get the picture .. as a matter of fact, on the occasions when we DID have a good to excellent bass player, it usually took me a couple days to settle back and play in an actually musical fasion again .. also ..I could go to the crib after the gig without the headache and stiff neck for a change .. ..until the next "Ropes" came along
  20. (MUFF) Missile, Pardon my impertenence but..I'm starting to agree with B-3. Where did I ever say I "NEEDED" A "SPONSOR" (better and hipper word for what you're trying to relay). .IF YOU'RE SO FUCKING *SMART* WHY DIDN'T YOU COP YOU A SPONSOR??....DIG?? (You seem to be so God Damn artistically motivated). Only reason I ever played cans in the first place was because I didn't have to work very hard at it and it was a good way to get my dick sucked on. As far as aspirations???..shit, man...NON FUCKING EXISTENT!! DEEP
  21. Along those same lines, I'm still waiting for DEEP to reveal that with admitted assets of a mansion, several automobiles ( one at least a classic ), four grand pianos, a wife, amistress in NYC ( and I assume a pied a terre as well ), and many investimentos .. why ..with all this, he needed an "angel" to cover the costs of his recent albummen ?? hmmmm ?
  22. If our esteemed administrator does in fact manage to install a similucrum ( sp?) of "The Chair" on this site: I claim dibs on ALL the Gerbil (and other miscellaneous cloacial insetions ) threads .. ...and there will be an , ahem "entrance" charge same thing for things found inside Robert Goulet during late night ER visits to the Las Vegas hospital .. softly ..as I leave you //softly
  23. (Muff) Missile, If your not Phil Sunkel are you possibly Phil's Uncle?? DEEP (I think) That would make me a Sunkels Uncle right ? BTW: next time you turn around and see GROPER, tell him I shall not respond to him or his minyan ( correct spelling ), because being of the Celtic persuasion, I am a Druid, not a jewish person ..nor do I play one on tV .. therefore, I DO eat sausage, and fuck the occasional tree ..
  24. I'd like to go on record as stating once and for all: I am neither DEEP, the Grouper ( or Groper, take yer pick ), Patti, Conn,JS, Randy, B-3r, Christern, or Clint Hobson .. furthermore, I'm ALSO not: Frank Zappa,Pinky Lee, Dagmar, Zasu Pitts, Milton DeLugg Dennis Kucinich, Tiny Tim, Madylin Murray O'Hair, Lawrence Welk, John Bubbles. Paraddiddle Joe Morris, Christina Applegate, Pat or Bugs Moran, Jaye.P. Morgan, Christine Jorgensen, Chris Connor, Chuck Connors, Mike Mazurski,Lyle Mays, Lyle Alzedo,Lupe Velez, Boney James, Louie Louie, Brace Beamer ( remeber him ?? ), Martin Mull, Miff Mole, Guaca Mole, Reverend Pat Robertson ( arrgh .. bite my tongue ! ) Jeff Goldblum, Blossom Dearie, Phil Urso, Phil Sunkel, Phil Harris, Phil Errupp, Marquis De Sade Lassie, Gentle Ben, or ) last but not least ) Jerry Lester, or Gerri Winters and/or Mulligan disclaimer, now complete, I now return you to : "THE SIXTY NINE FACES OF DEEP"
  25. one would that during your "dry" season that you do not abstain from the delights of the BC Bud and other smouldering pleasurable things ..hmmm??
