This Bershire site does look pretty good. In addition to picking up the Urgreter, I found they had 65 ECM CDs for $6-7 each, so I got a few of those. They did have a note up that said they couldn't ship ECMs back to Europe for whatever reason. Also Deutsche Gramophon for good prices and some 1201 for 3$.

Not today but last week: Bemsha Swing (Woody Shaw).

Thank you Bentsy, actually it was your recommendation on our "native" forum that made me start listening to him. I am happy to learn about my beneficial activities…

Helmut Newton is one of my favorite photographers. This is Elsa Peretti, New York 1975. -
Bobby Jaspar sounds very interesting. I promise to check it.

I can imagine I'm not the only one here on this board who first listened to Rene Urtreger when he played with Miles on "Ascenseur pour l'echafaud". Many years ago I bought another CD of Rene Urtreger: It's called "Masters" and RU plays there with Niels Pedersen, Christian Escoude & Andre Ceccarelli. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any link on the net to this CD. A few days ago I added another CD of Mr. Urtreger to my collection: it is from Jazz in Paris series: "Joue Bud Powell". It was recorded on 1955. The young pianist (21 when recorded) plays 6 Powell's tunes plus 2 originals. This is beautiful session!!! Urtreger sounds great and I think he is a great bebop pianist. Any other Urtreger's recommendations??? Any idea if he is still active in jazz scene in France??? Joue Bud Powell

As I wrote here several times in the past, I have a special and unexplained weakness to multi reed players. RRK, Dolphy, Ehrlich, Lateef and of course Ken Mcintyre. Mcintyre is a little bit different from all the others because of his oboe and bassoon playing. I love the music he composed, I love what he did when he played with Dolphy and I love the way he improvise. Also Joanne Brackeen is one of my favorite players. I put my hands on all of her available CDs. She is a pianist of the highest quality and one of the important figures on the contemporary jazz. When I've heard that they recorded together I knew it must be something special. A New Beginning is Mcintyre's last recording. Mcintyre sounds great and he also composed all the tunes. Brackeen plays some beautiful solos. Wilbur Morris on the bass (I had the honor to see him in Tel-Aviv a few years ago when he played with Murray), and Charlie Persip on drums complete the rhythm section. The Review from Coda (by Jerry D'Souza) : Now I have to add to my collection some of McIntyre's SteepleChase recordings.

Monk's box on Prestige and more
B. Goren. replied to Alon Marcus's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
You are absolutely right. The 3 CDs set on Black Lion is among Monk's best (and last) recordings. I have a special weakness to Monk's performance of "The Man I Love". Beautiful solo palying. -
Herbie Mann (and other jazz flute) recs, anyone?
B. Goren. replied to Nutty's topic in Recommendations
In my humble opinion, Roland Kirk was one of the great flute players. To be honest, I must tell you I am a RRK fan and I like almost everything he did but I understand you are familiar with him. Another great flute player is Buddy Collette. Also Joe Farrell and Paul Horn worth checking out their recordings. -
Oscar Peterson – why did those greats disliked him
B. Goren. replied to Alon Marcus's topic in Artists
brownie, This is a little bit off topic, but please give me names. Maybe this is a good topic for a new thread. Bentsy, I am a man of peace. Don't want to start any war. Besides the subject has been dealt before on various threads. But just two names to satisfy your curiosity: Keith Jarrett and Charles Lloyd! I have had doubts about their sincerity and their originality and remain unimpressed by their recent efforts. Lloyd the first time I heard him (at Slug's in New York in 1965 where he played with a smashing quartet that had Herbie Hancock, Henry Grimes and Pete LaRoca!) was the weak link in the unit. The fact that I had heard Coltrane, Ayler and Shepp (the Shepp of 1965!) at about the same time did not help him stand the comparison. I heard Lloyd later with the quartet that had Keith Jarrett and Jack de Johnette. Was again unimpressed by Lloyd. But I liked Jarrett then. And I loved him when he played with Miles. Also enjoyed the quartet he had with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian. As far as I am concerned things went downward when he went solo. When I hear his trio nowadays I listen to Gary Peacock and deJohnette. Jarrett's improvisations leave me cold. But that's just me. And if anybody enjoys Jarrett and Lloyd, good for them! I have hundreds of other musicians I prefer to listen to... Thanks brownie. I also prefer Jarrett's early recordings. -

Monk's box on Prestige and more
B. Goren. replied to Alon Marcus's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
The complete Blue note recordings of TM was the first set I've ever bought. And regarding Monk's session with Miles: If my memory serves me correctly you can find this session on the complete Prestige recordings of Miles, which is another essential set. -
I still wonder: Mingus recorded Right Now on June (2 & 3) 1964 after the group came back from the European tour. What happened to Jaki Byard? Why did'nt he sit on the pianist chair???
