  1. That dollhouse is adorable! I still have the coat tree my dad made, and the unbelievably beautiful doll clothes my grandmother (his mother) made -- including one that matched a dress she made for me (shades of the "American Girl" strategy, huh?) My contribution to the tradition was to sew Halloween costumes for my son from age 2 to 11. The biggest triumph was a Ninja Turtles costume before any were mass-produced -- he'd been reading the comic book from the start, so he was already into them when the cartoon hit TV, and 6 weeks later the homemade costume made its debut -- we were trick-or-treating NYC style (in shops and restaurants) and inspired envy in a boy two years older who said to his mother: "Damn! You said there were no Ninja Turtle costumes!"
  2. Now THAT'S impressive. B-) Those wine-crate wardrobes are FANTASTIC, Weizen! I'm impressed, too! My dad made me a little coat-tree for doll coats his mother had made for me for Xmas 1956 -- set the tone for how to deal with doll paraphernalia pleas: MAKE IT YOURSELF! If I'd had a girl, I could have said and done that about doll stuff -- but as it happened, my son wanted video games and basketball cards...
  3. F. Scott Fitzgerald was a terrible speller !!! (When I learned that, I was shook up and came to recognize my own "perfect spelling" as a quirk, useful for landing a job as a proofreader, evidence of a strong visual memory, but not "intelligence" as I had previously believed...)
  4. Maybe she's selling things given as presents by clueless friends and family??? In the light of Randy Twizzle's comment above, let me clarify: "family and friends who were clueless about her preferences..."
  5. What language has the best word for ice cream? I vote Czech: zmrzlina
  6. Maybe she's selling things given as presents by clueless friends and family???
  7. What Marc Anthony CDs are those? He's another incredible singer, IMHO...
  8. Ditto... (adding "Superstition" and "I Was Made to Love Her" to the not-on-INNERVISIONS list)
  9. My dad was a surgeon -- another profession where skilled, intact fingers are crucial -- with a lot of hobbies, including woodworking. People were always asking my mother "How can you let him do that? Does he carry extra insurance for that?" Well, first off -- the idea of anyone being able to tell my father they weren't going to "let" him do what he intended to do was a laugh riot! But also, my father was very into testing his control over potentially dangerous situations (flying airplanes was another hobby) -- he considered it important to practice his mental focus: to maintain the right balance of calm, intensity, caution and boldness. After he retired from medicine, he said it was kind of a karmic thing: if he was going to work on other people with a knife, it was good practice to subject himself to a similar risk.
  10. But today is GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!
  11. That's a nice one! And Slovakia isn't bad either! My foreign travels have been entirely based upon where the gigs were... and I've really enjoyed all the countries I wound up in... Czechoslovakia (in 1984), and the Czech Republic since, plus (I'll try for alphabetical order): Austria, Belgium, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany (present-day, as well as old East and West), Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Netherlands, Scotland, Slovenia, Spain (so far, I've only been to Barcelona -- would love to see the rest), Sweden, Switzerland... Ljubljana, Barcelona and Prague are all beautiful cities!
  12. Oops, I hit "view results" instead of "vote" -- as if I only live in cyberspace! Actually, a few blocks west of the East River in Manhattan...
  13. Must have been, cuz I'm sure it had nothing to do with exchanging CD's, or people's opinions of one lovely young songstress, or their hostility toward her new fans, or certain adult content on a site that was drawing lots of new pre-teen fans...
  14. I'd just like to speak up for the Politics Forum and say that FOR THE MOST PART, I don't recall any hostility there spilling over into any other forums. In fact, this recent episode is the only time I can recall it happening. And IMHO, it has happened because someone started a thread ABOUT antisemitism in which he never acknowledged that antisemitism exists and could still be considered a problem in people's lives -- no, not a bigger problem than other problems in the world or the only problem that matters, but still a fact to be weighed along with all other facts. That's the ONLY one I've ever seen really spin out like this. If I recall correctly, the conflict between GregM and Dan Gould was personal nastiness, not political... The conflict about what someone said about what someone else said about what Pat Metheny said was not political... The various conflicts about whether it is appropriate to "speak ill of the dead" (or of the ill, for that matter!) will, I'm just guessing, continue... That's been going on in the world forever, and not just on this board. I just don't see the Politics forum as being the font of all that's nasty! But it makes complete sense to block it from non-members, because otherwise it could become quite a troll magnet...
  15. That seems like a very good idea. I'd rather not see it permanently disappear, but if that will ultimately be the case, there are some things already posted in there that I would like to be able to look at again before they go away forever...
  16. Yeah, apple pie is the usual... I never thought about the George Washington angle, but you might be right... I just figured Malcolm X was giving the idiom a vivid (risque?) twist...
  17. Happy birthday, wherever you are!
  18. Happy Birthday, you youngster you!!!
  19. I loved Old and New Dreams -- the album and the band. Saw them live twice (sometime in 1977-79), and those concerts are right up there with my favorites of all time.
  20. Up, just to keep Board Birthday thread on top !!!!
  21. The image didn't show up. Is that pound cake? I'd prefer pie. Oops...
  22. You're early. NO ! That's a year old! This year it's Sunday, March 6 ! [seriously (sorta), I always thought there was no such thing as a 12 "AM" or "PM" -- just noon or midnight...]
