  1. I'll save Dan the trouble. The reason we're in first is because the Yanks play 1/2 of their games on a Little League field. Of course, it would be a "Little Tyke" field and we would have won 100 games by now if our right handed hitters had the benefit of a green Monster in left.
  2. And for some reason not yet revealed, he and Posada can't get on the same page. Burnett's ERA is 1.5 points lower when someone other than Posada catches him this year. Unless they come up with an answer playoff time, they may have to DH Posada when Burnett pitches, thus benching Matsui. Very risky if they don't carry a 3rd string catcher on the post season roster.
  3. The most enjoyable one for me tonight was A-Rod's crushing of a 3-2 curve down the left field line and over the Green Monster as the Sox faithful were standing screaming for an inning ending strikeout. Did my heart good, even though I'm a bigger Matsui fan. Meanwhile Cano giveth and taketh what with his two errors, the second of which gave the Sox one gift run, sandwiched between an impressive shot over the Sox bullpen into the right center field bleachers. After a miserable showing by Beckett over the first five innings, I was surprised that he was able to get his stuff together to record 10, or was it 11 (?), straight outs, before Matsui his his 2nd of the night.
  4. I suspect that the "bummer" is due to the fact that Uncle Sam wants his take of the action. If they just gave out cash to passengers, it would be "off the books" and that a TV show cannot do. I've really dug the show however over the past couple of years.
  5. Not Dixieland by any means but one disc I've always enjoyed consists of a live date in early '71 that features Hackett in the company of Mary Lou Williams and Dizzy. Very worth hearing.
  6. This can be gotten rather inexpensively used, Ray Charles & Milt Jackson, "Soul Brothers/Soul Meeting" (Atlantic):
  7. Guitarists normally not associated with jazz have made Monk tribute albums: This one is notable for a very acceptable vocal appearance by Sting on "'Round Midnight". I kid you not.
  8. Since your topic subheading asks where to go next, I would highly recommend, if you haven't done so already, getting into Artie Shaw's '49 band which featured modern arrangements by Tadd Dameron, Gene Roland and others. Shaw was much more open to the newer developments than BG ever was, and without getting into the hoary controversy of who was better, Shaw is the clarinetist I've always preferred. Check out the review on the Amazon website: http://www.amazon.com/Artie-Shaw-His-Orche...9/dp/B0002KQK34
  9. I've always dug his "Ameriques", especially the version in an old LP I own of Maurice Avranel conducting the Utah Symphony. Very exciting piece of music. Interestingly, I got turned on to Varese many years ago by a fanatic British Mingus collector with whom I had been trading tapes.
  10. I've loved Hutch for many a year, love the Blue Notes, and have seen him live several times, most notably at the Vanguard in '79 where he truly smoked. Got to see Locke two years ago down here at Nova University when he appeared in a quartet he co-led with Geoff Keezer and he was stupendously impressive. Thanks for the link. Great!
  11. Check out, if you can still find it, Rosnes' Blue Note CD, IN THE MOMENT. She takes an absolutely terrific solo on the opening track, "Summer Night" that also features a marvelous solo by Joe Henderson. Ever since I heard that, I'm more interested in what she has to say than her hubby, Bill Charlap.
  12. The Paris Combo, a wonderful cabaret-type French group that is quite jazz-oriented. Lead singer Belle du Berry is marvelous and behind her include David Lewis, a '50s Miles-inspired trumpeter and Potzi, a guitarist who is obviously inspired by Django. Ongoing study of French has led me to this group and you don't have to be expert in the language to appreciate their musicality.
  13. For a real visual as well as audio treat, check out Pullen's work on organ on John Scofield's DVD, LIVE 3 WAYS.
  14. I definitely enjoyed seeing them many times, first with Mingus at the Vanguard back in the mid '70s, and later of course, the quartet with Cameron Brown and Dannie Richmond. I particularly remember a free concert that they gave in Prospect Park, Brooklyn, back around '82 or so in which, the crowd, many of whom had not been aware of them previously but were just there simply because it was free, roared with approval. They definitely could and often did, put on a great show. Later on, I caught Adams a couple of times in the Mingus Dynasty band. They both left us far too early. I also prefer their Timeless and Soul Note releases to the two Blue Notes, but do have 'em all (mostly on LP). The first time I heard them together was on a radio broadcast (which I taped and have converted to CD-R) when they appeared with Mingus at the Apollo Theater as part of the Newport JF in NYC back in '73. I was pleasantly surprised as I had gone to see Mingus a few times in the year or so previously when the group featured Charles McPherson, Bobby Jones and Lonnie Hillyer. Not to put that group down as I enjoyed them tremendously also, but when Mingus remade the group with Adams, Pullen and Jack Walrath, it was, for me at least, a shocking and highly invigorating change.
  15. Any manager would have made the claim that the third base coach grabbing Sheffield was illegal. Of course it was moot but you can't blame him for pointing it out and trying to argue it. Not remotely bush especially considering that there were no histrionics involved. The in-bred hillbilly fuck-up on the other hand is as big a bush league moron as they come. Edit to add that losing a series in that manner to the mother fucking METS is not acceptable anywhere. I disagree in that once the HR was verified, there is absolutely no point delaying the game further with an argurment whose point is obviously moot. As for Papelbon, I chalk up his behavior to some immaturity, but I'd take him on my team anyday. He'll grow up once he realizes that absolute perfection in save opportunities is an impossibility.
  16. What the hell was Francona arguing about after the umps watched the video replay and correctly ruled Santos hit was indeed a HR? The announcers said something about the Met 3B coach interfering with Sheffield on the base paths, but that was obviously moot once the HR was called. And then Papelbon running out onto the field disgusted that the 2B umpire made the out call on the Wright stab and throw to second for the force out. And of course it was obviously the right call. Looks like the Red Sox cannot at all accept blowing a game in the 9th at Fenway. Their histrionics were pretty bush, IMO.
  17. It is of course a wonderful box set. Proud to say I attended during that week and Evans having mentioned to the audience that all the material was being recorded, I was surprised that it had taken so long for the initial CD box set to come out, not to mention that I thought it would first be released on LP, it being only a couple of months thereafter in 1980 when he passed away.
  18. Hey Jeff, you should have just given me a call. It's a wonderful session from start to finish. I've owned it for many years on LP, have listened to it often and finally was able to acquire the CD release when Dan Gould had a giant CD sale. Among the many highlights is Slide Hampton's uptempo arrangement of a perennial jazz ballad, "You Don't Know What Love Is". Cooks all the way.
  19. I love Booker Little's Candid session OUT FRONT. Max's work on the opening track, "We Speak", is fabulous!
  20. Wish I could make it. Saw you in a quintet you fronted at Alice Tully back in '92 that had Tom Harrell and Charles McPherson in the front line. And of course, I'll never forget you with John Webber performing at my wedding back in '85. Jeez!! The years are flying by.
  21. The standards he performed included "In A Sentimental Mood", a rocking "They Say It's Wonderful" (my favorite performance of the night), and an extended (due to a lengthy bit of trading of fours with the drummer) version of "My One and Only Love". The calypso of course was the always performed at every Sonny concert in the past two decades, "Don't Stop the Carnival". I attended the concert with the premier private Rollins collector, Carl Smith, who knew the titles of the more "recent" material performed, which I now cannot recall. Got to meet the very gracious Rollins backstage afterwards, a real treat!
  22. Perhaps you were at the same Carnegie Hall concert that I attended that year. That was truly a fantastic concert, everyone was on fire. On another note, I highly recommend Farrell's work on an early Chick session, TONES FOR JONES BONES (Vortex LP). The version of "Litha" on that session is smoking! I do have the VIM 'N VIGOR session, good but I don't think it's essential.
  23. I was at the Vanguard on two occasions in '72 to see Monk, Paul Jeffrey on tenor in place of Rouse. And I also attended what I believe was Monk's final concert which took place either at Lincoln Center or perhaps it was Town Hall, but I'm reasonably certain it took place in early '76. The concert was billed as a tribute to Monk, the scuttlebutt being that Monk may or may not show up to play. If not, Barry Harris would be the pianist, however Monk did indeed appear and play. Should have kept the program.
  24. These clips are from the wonderful Brigitte Berman documentary about Shaw titled "Time is All You've Got". I videotaped this off PBS some years ago and have finally transferred it to DVD. Pity, it has yet to be issued on commercial DVD, but I believe that there had been litigation about the rights to the material initiated by Shaw some years before his death. Great, great clarinetist (actually, the greatEST imo) but someone who could be a most difficult person to deal with as evidenced by the numerous marriages and various anecdotes recounted by Gene Lees and others.
