  1. Supposedly, Damon is anxious to become the new Yankee centerfielder if the Yanks will commit to a five year deal. Dan, will that finally put you over the edge? It'll be fun if only to see what he looks like when he sheds the Neanderthal man image.
  2. I finally got to listen to this disc and here are some jotted down responses. Incidentally, I find the total number of responses to tjobbe's discs to be somewhat disappointing. These discs take quite a bit of time to assemble and send out, not to mention the expense. It seems more recipients should be responding, especially other than to just say, "thanks". Anyway, here goes: 1) Pleasant big band side. Reminds me of Thad & Mel, although I cannot identify one soloist which leads me to believe that it may be a primarily non-American orchestra. 2) Got to be the venerable Benny Carter on alto. He was the "Lily Pons" of the alto IMO, although Bird put that appelation on the Rabbit. He probably arranged this track also. 3) "What's Going On" in more ways than two? I hate when jazz musicians do soul covers, the end result invariably sucks IMO. Did Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson, et al, ever feel the need to do a vocal cover of "Oleo"? 4) My favorite track by a long shot so far. Diz's "Con Alma". Beautiful, soulful alto playing by who, I just can't place although I think I'll recognize the name as being represented in my collection once identified . 5) Goes nowhere, NMCOT. 6) Again, nothing special. I wonder why the last two pieces were picked. Very nondescript. 7) "All Blues". The singer should never be allowed to be in front of a microphone again. 8) Tenor feature on a standard, which for heavens sake I can't place right now. 9) This is much too "percussive" and in a bad way, unlike the same critique I hear from classical enthusiasts when they're listening to a dynamite modern jazz pianist. 10) Guitars. Verbal clue in there.
  3. Got these CD-Rs rather late, as you know. Have avoided looking at the previous responses but will surely do so after I post this. First off, for my tastes an uneven collection of pieces, but some highlights. 1) Enjoyed this big band side very much which is quite evocative of the stuff that Gigi Gryce with Clifford Brown produced back in the early ‘50s when on tour with the Lionel Hampton band in France. No guess as to personnel. Interesting quick fadeout but at least it has an ending. 2) Latin motif, trumpet player reminds me of Don Ellis. Piano is given a lot of space but doesn’t do much. Sadly, no guesses here as to personnel. 3) Piano trio that gets a nice groove going. Gee, no guesses here either but feel I should recognize the pianist. 4) Guitar with exotic percussion backing. NMCOT. 5) Much too syrupy opening for me. Baritone is a pleasant relief but in the end doesn’t do much for me either. 6) Yuk! Take it off! 7) Trombone and bass, very entertaining. Craig Harris? Liked this track. 8) Electric guitar which does very little if anything for me. One of the reasons I cannot abide any post ‘60s Miles. But back to this. Actually, I’ve got nothing to say. Again, NMCOT. 9) Oy, “Satin Doll” in a version which reminds me of one of those super hyped audio Command LPs of the ‘60s with Enoch Light in charge, pretty horrible. And much as I hate to admit this but this is one Duke tune that I never, ever cared for. 10) My passion for jazz having been spurred by listening to my dad’s Artie Shaw records when I was a kid, I especially give attention to clarinetists since that instrument has been IMO unjustly neglected in modern times. First clarinet reminds me somewhat of Rolf Kuhn, the second one while evincing some Pee Wee Russell influence, stumps me completely when it comes to just giving a guess. Liked the track though. 11) No clue, except that it sounds like a section from an Ellington suite with the metronomically boring Sam Woodyard backing up everything. 12) Guitar. Not of interest for my tastes. No guesses here. 13) While not “smooth jazz” as such, it has the same effect on me. Check that, it is a higher quality of background music but that’s all it is for me. 14) Piano and bass duo. Alright, I guess. Not something I could ever return to. Well recorded. 15) Is that a bandoneon? What else is on this album? 16) OK, clarinet again. Soulful rendition, can’t place the tune which I feel I should instantly know. 17) Has to be Lockjaw. Don’t know anyone else with that sound. Kicking! 18) “Dexterity”, right? Those Bird tunes can be tricky to identify. On bass clarinet, no less. No idea who, but enjoy listening to Bird or Monk tunes by anybody. 19) Pleasant ‘50s big band sound with Pres influenced tenor, guitarist who could be Jimmy Gourley, no other guesses here. 20) Meandering piece, doesn’t do much for me. Wish I could have been more enthusiastic overall, but am curious about a couple of the sides on this disc. I have a feeling that I’m going to be surprised at the names that will be revealed and hope I didn’t embarrass myself with my negativity.
  4. Back in '74 when I lived in NYC and frequented Studio Rivbea often, I got to know Sam and Beatrice and was fortunate to host them at my apartment in Brooklyn Heights one memorable Saturday afternoon. She was indeed a lovely lady and a very devoted wife to Sam. My heart goes out to Sam. RIP indeed.
  5. All of these recommendations have been great. However if you're looking for wonderful jazz combined with excellent color and audio fidelity, I would highly recommend two I picked up this past year put out by Geneon Entertainment. "Stan Getz: Last Concert" with great piano support from Kenny Barron: "Chick Corea & Gary Burton: Interaction", tremendous empathy and superb musicianship Both DVDs are available for less than $15 apiece at videouniverse.com. Well worth it.
  6. Face it. We'll have victory in Iraq before we see the answers to this BFT. I feel so justified in not ever having listened to these BFTs when I got them. Since they arrived so very late and I had agreed to make copies for two of my Florida compatriots, I was so disgusted that I simply made one set of copies for one recipient and gave my "originals" to the other guy. Therefore I have no curiosity. While so many of you upheld your end of the bargain by listening attentively and offering your responses, I feel for you. But it's time to just chalk this BFT up to a very bad experience and move on. Time heals all wounds and wounds all heels.
  7. I picked up a DVD today of Corea and Burton performing much of the music from their "Native Sense" album in a large concert hall somewhere in Europe. Fabulous DVD, by the way. In any event, I would like to know which concert hall in what city this performance took place as well as the exact date or at least which month it was, some time in 1997 I believe. I also have had for quite some time a commercial videotape of C & B in a concert performance in Tokyo. There is a copyright year of 1985 on the box however a Google search of the discographies of these two came up with one listing that indicated it may have occurred as early as 1981. So I'd like to know the exact or most approximate date of this concert as well. Thanks.
  8. To NeverOnFriday: Nothing wrong with being where you're at. While I listen mostly to Blue Note "type" material of the '50s and '60s, I got my kicks this morning digging a side that Hawk recorded with Pee Wee Russell. And "Sweets" is just what his nickname implies. Thanks for the rec.
  9. The magazine, The Nation has a lengthy review by David Yaffe of the following five books on jazz: Is Jazz Dead? (Or Has It Moved to a New Address) by Stuart Nicholson Crossovers: Essays on Race, Music, and American Culture by John Szwed Django: The Life and Music of a Gypsy Legend by Michael Dregni Northern Sun, Southern Moon: Europe's Reinvention of Jazz by Mike Heffley Jazz on the River by William Howland Kenney Here's the link
  10. I think the fall '66 Europe tour that Sonny did as the leader of a trio that had Jymie Merritt and Max Roach constitutes some of the best "private" Sonny there is. Some of it was issued on various bootleg LPs, I'm not aware of which CDs, if any. But the material does circulate among private tape collectors who are increasingly transferring such material to CD-R.
  11. I totally agree. The music is fabulous and the fidelity is the best of all the material recorded from that tour. Plus there is a very interesting interview of Coltrane between sets. It is definitely the one to pick up if options are limited.
  12. Success at last! They arrived today, hopefully before you've sent out a 2nd package. Will give it a listen sometime this weekend.
  13. To John B and Dan G: RT said that he'd post by August and if one looks at the Master List, sure enough RT is scheduled to do a second BFT in August.........2007. So have patience. Seriously, I have rarely, if ever, witnessed this kind of inconsiderate behavior in someone who professes to love this music. Normally, generosity and sharing, particularly of information, are attributes that are well manifested among jazz lovers. Oh well, there's nothing wrong with your thinking Dan. If for any reason I behaved as badly as RT, I too wouldn't show up in any other forum within Organissimo. I think all of us here feel the same way. We're mystified and also somewhat disappointed at the behavior of one of our members.
  14. Well, Monday's mail has come and gone and still, nothing.
  15. Can you give me an idea of what "huge dollars" means? I could stand to part with this if the price is right.
  16. Ernie Henry Henry 'Red' Allen Allen Eager
  17. Still did NOT get mine today. What's with mail from Europe to southeast Florida? Seems like we're the last to get stuff. Wilma is no longer an excuse.
  18. Enough. I'm surprised nobody recognized Velma Middleton.
  19. Who am I?
  20. Thanks to all who responded. Problem has been "solved". I bought a Sony combo DVD/CD burner (model DRU-810A) at Best Buy the other day. Great buy - with mail in rebates and a $5 Reward Zone voucher, final cost should be around $50 with tax. Comes with a Nero software suite CD-Rom too.
  21. True enough. But that's where taste and imagination come in. I could listen to Diz's high note trumpet break on the version of "A Night in Tunisia" from the ...ELECTRIFYING EVENING WITH... album any time of the day and always enjoy it as if hearing it for the very first time. Killian however.....
  22. No, the drive won't read any CD either. As far as transferring it to another PC, if I'm going to open up a PC to do an installation, I'd just as soon install a new drive. Anyway, thanks for the suggestions.
  23. I've made literally hundred of CD-Rs on my Teac CD burner. Lately whether I use Nero or Roxio, I get essentially the same message whenever I insert any blank CD-R (e.g., Maxell, Fuji): "Please insert a blank disc". I've rebooted my PC, varied the type of transfer from on the fly to using Exact Audio Copy to make .wav files. No luck, the writer won't work. I'm pretty sure it has to be replaced. Can anyone explain what is going on and/or have a suggestion on whether it can be salvaged?
  24. Been out of touch because of Wilma, but was able to see the sweep with the help of a battery powered 7 inch screen b&w TV. Was rooting for the Sox but was almost sad to see them sweep because it meant another night in the dark without a game to keep my mind sports-occupied during this hurricane imposed blackout. Re a sweep being close, unfortunately I'm old enough to recall a sweep of my Yanks by the LA Dodgers in '63 where the 4 game scores were: 5-2, 4-1, 1-0, 2-1. In other words the Dodgers scored a grand total of 12 runs in four games meaning that the Yankee pitching staff had an ERA of 3.00 or lower (if one or more runs were unearned). The Yanks however scored only 4 runs in 4 games which has to be the mark for all time futility in a World Series. Of course, Koufax pitched two games and Drysdale pitched the only shutout. However, losing to Johnny Podres at that stage of his career was inexcusable.
  25. To my ears he always did which is one reason why I seldom listen to JATP jams. Much too much showboating by Killian and often by Roy and Jacquet as well.
